Introduction:

Cargo Handling Service" means loading, unloading, packing or unpacking of cargo

and includes cargo handling services provided for freight in special containers or for
non-containerized freight, services provided by a container freight terminal or nay
other freight terminal, for all modes of transport and cargo handling services
incidental to freight, but does not include handling of export cargo or passenger
baggage or mere transportation of goods.

A well planned cargo operation both in port and on ship can reduce the level of
emission from the ship’s machinery resulting in reduced energy consumption per
transported unit..
:Rotterdam Port

The Port of Rotterdam is one of the oldest and largest seaports in Europe. The port
which was the world's busiest port from 1962 to 1986 has now been overshadowed by
Asian ports such as Singapore and Shanghai

The Rotterdam port is considered to be a strategically important distribution point in

Europe as it is surrounded by Europe's highly-populated and industrialiser centers -
the German Ruhr district Paris and London

The Port of Rotterdam came into existence in 1283 when a small fishing village was
created at the mouth of the Rotte River by reclaiming a tract of land. The port became
a major seaport in 1360 after the construction of a canal to the Schie This
development allowed the port to gain access to larger cities in the north and to
facilitate the transport of goods between England and Germany

The Port of Rotterdam became the country's second most important port after its
expansion along the Meuse. Discovery of the sea route to the Indies in the 17th
century led to a boom period in shipping and commerce sectors

:Equipment

Cargo-handling equipment at the Port of Rotterdam includes ten sheer leg cranes 12
container cranes 22 ship-to-shore bulk cranes 25 floating cranes, 103 container gantry
cranes and 162 multi-purpose crane

The port has three shipyards. There are five graving, one graving and covered and
.seven floating docks. A slipway maintains inland vessel

the cargo handling system is automatic so the process of loading and unloading is

very fast and efficient

GANTRY CRANE PARTS

When it comes to lifting specialization, gantry cranes deliver. From one-ton indoor
single leg workstation gantries to massive 1,000-ton double-leg rail-mounted gantries
found in shipyards, Coker units, concrete yards, mining operations and steel storage
.yards, gantry cranes provide unmatched lifting versatility

LIFT TRUCK PARTS

Konecranes is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of Heavy Lift Trucks with
models ranging from 10 tonnes (22,000 lbs) to 80 tonnes (176,000 lbs) for a wide
range of industrial applications, along with the world’s most comprehensive line of
container handling equipment encompassing both empty handlers, top-picks and reach
stackers with capacities up to 45 tonnes in the 3rd row or 2nd rail for intermodal
applications

About Mombasa Port

For years, the Port Mombasa has been known as “the city of merchants”. Dating
back to the times of Vasco Da Gama, it became an increasingly busy trading post
for the region. Due to its location, strategically placed midway between South
Africa and the gulf of Eden the Port has experienced tremendous traffic through
.the years
The Port of Mombasa is the gateway to East and Central Africa, and is one of the
busiest Ports along the East African coastline. The Port provides direct
connectivity to over 80 Ports worldwide and is linked to a vast hinterland
comprising Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo,
Northern Tanzania, Southern Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia by road. A railway line
.also runs from the Port to Uganda and Tanzania

:Mombasa port problems

Mombasa port is facing many problems in cargo handling equipment as they use
cranes that have inferior quality, as they are looking to change these cranes with
.types of lower quality
There is no schedule to repair and maintenance the equipment in Mombasa port
.that’s lead to many problems like accidents. Delay in loading and discharge

All accidents are the result of rogue ship contractors’ working practices and the lack
of training for their day-workers who are inexperienced and untrained the best of
.times

Ways to improve Cargo handling resulting in environment benefits

are:

1- Carry maximum capacity which will result in less fuel consumption per cargo unit.

2- High capacity Loading and Unloading Operation on port to reduce ship stay time
resulting in less emission on ports

3- Quick turnaround time will ensure slow steaming at sea hence less emission

Efficient cargo handling means safer and easier cargo operation and monitoring.
Technology with advanced software tools are used for the same along with
sophisticated equipment.

Use of eco and user friendly cargo handling products

Well trained shore and ship staff who concerned about safety and environment

A lot of terminal or port cargo handling equipment is provided to facilitate

movement of the cargo to and from the ship's side and the transit shed,

warehouse, barge, railway wagon or road vehicle. These include two-wheeled

hand barrows and four-wheeled trucks either manually or mechanica1ly

propelled, and mechanically or electrica1ly propelled tractors for hauling four
wheeled

trailers. Ro-Ro trailers are moved by tug-masters or Ro-Ro tractors. There

are also belt conveyors mechanically or electrically operated, or rollers, all

perhaps extending from the quayside to the transit shed, warehouse, railway

wagon or road vehicle. Containers are loaded and unloaded by means of the

quayside container cranes, i.e. container gantries also called shiptainers.

Transtainers or stacking cranes, straddle carriers, van carriers, front and side

loading fork-lift trucks are used for moving and stacking containers within the

terminal up to five-high, i.e. five containers one above the other. Mechanically

Powered straddle carriers are designed to distribute containers on the quay and on the
terminal.

Fork lift trucks (FLT) are mechanically or electrically operated and fitted in front

with a platform in the shape of two prongs of a fork; lifting capacity varies from 1

to 45 tons. Clamps for reels and bales are provided on some fork lift trucks.

On the docks various types of dockside cranes, level-luffing cranes, mobile cranes

Etc. are used for moving and lifting packages. All the vertical cargo movements

are conducted by the lifting gear (lift-on/lift-off equipment).

Roll-on/Roll-off cargoes, containers and heavy loads on trailers, roll on and off

The Ro-Ro ship via stern, bow or quarter ramps . They are lifted to various decks on
Board by means of scissor-supported platforms .

Conclusion:
All In All , Rotterdam port have an advanced equipment's Cranes , New Trucks ,
New Forklifts And they time by time repair their equipment's than Mombasa port
which have very old equipment's which made problems at the port caused loss at
workers life. Also Rotterdam is one of the best ports have high technology at Cargo
handling but Mombasa port have low experience workers with low technology. Time
is very important at Rotterdam port so they have an automatic system saves time for
them at the opposite side at Mombasa which wastes many time with their old
system.
