Introduction
In recent years, online learning has become a prominent mode of education, especially with the advent
of technological advancements and the global shift towards digital platforms. The COVID-19 pandemic
further accelerated the adoption of online learning, leading to an unprecedented transformation in the
educational landscape. With its increased accessibility and flexibility, online learning has been
implemented across various academic levels, including Grade 11 Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics (STEM) programs. The impact of online learning on the academic performance of students,
particularly those in Grade 11 STEM, has become a topic of significant interest and concern. As students
embark on their journey towards higher education and career preparation, it is crucial to assess the
effectiveness and consequences of this shift in educational modality. This research aims to explore the
influence of online learning on the performance and outcomes of Grade 11 STEM students.
Understanding the impact of online learning on Grade 11 STEM students is crucial for educational
institutions, policymakers, and educators. Findings from this research will provide valuable insights into
the strengths and limitations of online learning in the context of STEM education. Moreover, it will
inform the development of effective strategies to optimize the online learning experience, ensuring that
Grade 11 STEM students can achieve their academic goals and prepare for future educational and
professional endeavors.
Background of the study
Online learning offers several advantages that may positively affect students' academic performance.
Firstly, it provides flexibility in terms of time and location, enabling students to access educational
resources and complete coursework at their convenience. This flexibility allows students to create
personalized learning environments, catering to their individual needs and learning styles. Additionally,
online learning offers a wide range of multimedia resources, interactive tools, and virtual simulations,
However, online learning also presents challenges that may potentially impact students' performance
negatively. The absence of face-to-face interactions and physical classroom environments can diminish
the sense of community and social interaction among students, leading to decreased motivation and
engagement. Moreover, technical issues, such as poor internet connectivity or limited access to devices,
may impede students' ability to fully participate in online classes and complete assignments effectively.
To assess the impact of online learning on Grade 11 STEM students' performance, various factors will be
considered. These factors include academic achievement, measured through standardized test scores,
grades, and performance evaluations. Additionally, student engagement, motivation, and overall
satisfaction with online learning will be examined through surveys and interviews. The research will also
explore the challenges faced by students and identify potential strategies or interventions to address
The study sought to determine the impact of online learning on the Students’ Performance of Grade 11
STEM Students of Dalandanan National High School from the 1st to the 3rd Quarter.
To answer the above cited problem, an answer to the following will be sought:
1. How does the online class affect the students' performance in Grade 11 STEM from the 1st to
a. General Chemistry
b. Calculus
2. What is the academic performance of the Grade 11 STEM students in terms of general weighted
average (GWA)?
3. What were the hardships that the students faced in the online class?
Hypothesis
Based on the problems presented in this study, the researchers formulated this hypothesis:
learning environments.
2. The academic outcomes of students who learned through face-to-face and online modes of
The primary concern of this study deals with the emphasis on the difficulties that the STEM students
have encountered when dealing with online classes and their relation to academic performance. The
impact was identified by the following subjects: General Chemistry and Calculus. Academic performance
on the other hand was determined by the students’ General Weighted Average (GWA).
The focus of this study will be on the students’ academical performance that is based on their general
weighted average (GWA). Prior to this, research will be conducted to support and guide the development
of this study.
Due to the stringent guidelines required from the researchers, the data gatherings will be delimited to
the Grade 11 STEM students of Dalandanan National High School and the researchers will not be allowed
to have other strand and off-school visits. The main data gathering method will be through interviews
around the school. Other data can be gathered through a phone or online interview with the available
different experts who have deep knowledge about the study. Also, due to time constraint, the gathered
data will only be limited and may not precisely cover all the scope of the study.
The duration of the study will be conducted within the first and third quarter of the school year 2022-
2023.
This part of the study discusses the importance of learning the benefits of the subject. This part will also
what do they need to improve to their learning system to enhance the students’ performance in terms of
learning.
Teachers- This research is helpful to teachers of the General Chemistry and Calculus subject. Teachers
can be given ideas about developing strategies for teaching the subject by creating work related to the
subject. This will also help in the way improving their teaching style to enhance the knowledge and
Students- The importance of this research to the students is that it will increase their knowledge
regarding their academic performance. This research will also serve as a guide for the students to know
what they should do to improve their studies and learning skills in a certain type of learning system.
Future researchers- This research can be a model for future researchers of this topic. The process and
methodology can guide how the data is analyzed. These research recommendations will also help to
