GIS 316, Ex 7a

Overview:

This exercise will teach us how to identify and

digitize roads, buildings/infrastructure e.g.
educational institutions, hospitals,
restaurants, from real life satellite images of a
specific area on Google Earth Pro and from
that, create KML files that are later to be
converted to Shapefiles to be exported to and
used in ArcMap to create a map of that area.

Objectives:

 Creating placemarks, paths and polygons

on Google Earth Pro to digitize the area
 Converting the KML files to Shapefiles using
Arctoolbox
 Exporting the files to ArcMap
 Producing a map that can be used as a
reference
The Google Earth Pro interface:

On the left, we can see a sidebar with the

options “Search”, “Places” and “Layers”.

Selecting a location and creating a folder

1. Search for "North South University" in the

Search box.
2. To create a folder: Right click My Place,
then Add, click the folder in the locations
section, name the folder, for example, “NSU”
and then click ok.
*Uncheck Places, Roads and Terrain the
“Layer” section*

Creating Polygons:

We will create digitized versions of the

buildings by tracing the area using the
“Polygon” feature

1. Right click on the NSU folder, click add,

then Polygon.
2. Name the untitled polygon "North South
University".
3. Do not click “ok” yet.
4. Under the tab “Style, Color” change the
Area from "Field+outline" to "Outline". This is
to help us see where we are drawing.
5. Set the Outline width to 3.
6. You can also adjust the Color and Opacity
of the Outline under Lines.
7. You may zoom in for better precision while
drawing the polygon.
8. Now trace around the North South
University building to make a drawing. If you
make an error, simply right click on the point
to adjust or erase it.
9. After completing digitization click “ok”.
10. You may right click on the "North South
University" polygon from the sidebar and
select Properties to alter any errors or
redraw.
A single file is created for each polygon.
Repeat steps 1 to 9 in order to create more
polygons for the other buildings. For step 2,
name them accordingly.

Drawing paths :

Paths can represent roads in Google Earth

Pro.

1. Check the “roads(outdated)” layer.

2. Right click on the created folder “NSU”,
select Add then Path.
3. Name the untitled path “Road no.6”.
4. Do not click ok yet.
5. Under the tab “Style, Color” change the
width to “5” and the Color to something
bright and easily detectable
6. Now you will draw the path. You will do this
by clicking on the Road no. 6 from the start to
the end of the road, clicking each time there
in a turn on the road.
7. Click “ok”
8. Repeat for other roads.
Drawing Placemarks:

A placemark is a marker indicating a place on

the map.

1. Check the “ Places(outdated)” layer.

2. Right click on the “NSU” folder, select add,
then Placemark.
3. Name the untitled placemark “NSU
Campus”.
4. A placemark with a pin symbol will appear.
5. You can change the symbol by choosing an
appropriate one from the options.
6. Drag the placemark symbol and place it on
the North South University building.
7. Click ok.
8. Repeat the steps to create new placemarks
for other places such as IUB, nearby
restaurants, mosques etc

*Save your work*

Right click on the “NSU” folder, select Save
Place As > Type > .kml > Save

Converting KML file to Shapefile:

1. Start ArcMap .
2. When prompted, Select the “with a blank
map” option.
3. Click the Geoprocessing tab and open
Arctoolbox .
4. In Arctoolbox, click the sign beside
“Conversion Tools” to expand it, expand
“From KML” and then double click “KML to
Layer”.
5. KML to layer promt will appear. In the Input
KML file option browse “NSU.kml”. Do not
change the Output.
6. Click “ok”

Exporting the data:

Note: Placemarks, Paths and Polygons on

Google Earth Pro are Points, Polylines and
Polygons on ArcMap.

1. Right click on the “Points” layer select

Data>Export data>Create Shapefile
2. Do the same for “Polylines” and
“Polygons”.
3. Uncheck the “NSU” layer in TOC.
4. Right click on the “Points”, “Polylines” and
“Polygons” layers and then select “label
features” for each layer.

Exporting the Map:

Turn on Layout View and insert (from the

main menu bar) each of the following
elements into your map:

a. Title – You will be presented with a text box

that is highlighted. Name your map. Move the
text box to the top of the page. You can use
