Sometimes, it is easier to write a story if you have the first
line. Write narratives which begin in these ways.

• The day began the way all Mondays begin, with the alarm
ringing.

• Slowly, the massive oak door swung open.

• I love my siste~, but sometimes she's a complete nuisance.

• There was a blinding flash of light and then all went dark.

• "Take me to your leader," croaked the alien.

• The moonlight made everything look ghostly.

• "It's time you woke up," said the cat, in a cheerful voice.

• How is it that some days, everything goes wrong? ·

• My heart raced and my hands shook.

• The box was of metal and tarnished with age.

■ I can always rely on my friends.

William the Conquerer decided to build a fortress next to the


Thames river. A wooden castle was already their. The fortress
was began in 1078. It was finished in 1097. William has died by
than. The fortress was cold and gloomy. It was built of stone.
Kings did not enjoy living there, new accomodation was built
nearby. This was a splendid and comfortable palace. The fortress
was known as the White tower. Important prisoners were held
there. A torcher chamber is maid in the basement. Later the
fortress had been used for storeing arms and armour.

UNIT FOURTEEN SENTENC~
r 1. Sentences can be written in many different ways.

For example:
(i} The angry boy kicked the desk and hurt his toe.
(ii} Kicking the des!y the angry boy hurt his toe.
(iii} The angry boy hurt his toe because he kicked the
desk.

Rewrite these sentences in two other ways.

a. The dog chased the cat across the lawn and ran into a tree.

b. Dad drank a cup of tea and read the morning paper.

c. My sister stayed up too late and was very tired.

d. The wind blew down a tree and it fell on our backyard shed.

2. Sentences may begin with phrases.

For example:

Sunday.

Rewrite these sentences so that they begin with the
