Chapter 1

The document provides background information on waste management in the Philippines. It discusses how improper waste disposal has led to environmental degradation and pollution. It introduces RA 9003, which mandates waste segregation education. The study aims to determine students' awareness and practices of proper waste segregation at Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High School. It will survey students on their demographics, current awareness, and waste sorting practices. The results could help improve waste management education.

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The earth that the humans live and the environment that provides the

necessities in daily lives is abused by their actions. Efforts are being made to make

people aware about the need to protect the environment. One of the main causes of

environment degradation is improper management of the disposal of waste. It is

major cause of pollution and outbreak of diseases in many parts of the world. What

aggregates is the fact that this crisis is globally concern and there is usually have no

permanent solution on environmental problems (Vivek et al, 2013).

The global community recognized waste management as an issue that

require serious attention. The aggressive pursuit for economic growth by developing

countries like the Philippines, has resulted in the distribution and use of product and

increasing the wastes that can contributes to environmental degradation and global

climate change (Shafiul, A.A and mansoor, A. 2003).

Since the Philippines is one of a country that is still developing and pursuing

for economic growth, the country produce two million tons of plastic waste every year

that cause environment degradation (Romulo, 2012). Since the country facing a

problem on mounting of waste, government drew up a decree to further the

environmental cause. On July 24, 2000, the Philippines Congress enacted RA 9003

or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act. This Act provides for an ecological

solid waste management program, “creating the necessary institutional mechanism

and incentives, declaring certain acts prohibited and providing penalties,

appropriating funds thereof, and for other purposes”. This Act mandated the

Department of Education (DEPED), the Technical Educational and Skills

Development Authority (TESDA), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and other concerned

government agencies to “incorporate ecological waste management in the school

system at all levels” (RA 9003,2000).

To further reduce waste in the Philippines government launch a program

called “National Eco Saver Program” (NEP) that can help the citizen specially, the

students to have a better management regarding waste segregation. The National

Eco Saver Program is a call to strengthen resource conservation, recovery,

segregation at source and recycling of waste materials. The program was conducted

to present to public school teachers and local government units (LGU) so that they

would be able to train and apply to students the practice of 5Rs (Rescue, Reduce,

Reuse, Recycle and Recover) Through their passbooks that will serve as a record of

points earned from the recyclable materials they have collected. The school can be

of great help in addressing the solution of waste management. The Administrator,

teaching staff, and other personnel of the school can teach the students how to

segregate their waste and through MRF (Materials Recovery Facility) they can put

their waste that they segregate to avoid sickness or diseases (Department of

Environmental and Natural Resources, 2017).

Despite of having an MRF inside ALLSH for more than two years which is led

by the STEM Strand, still, the surroundings of the school and inside of the classroom

have lack of proper waste segregation.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The purpose of this study is to determine the level of awareness and practices

of the students in Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High School. The study seeks to

answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents as to:

a. Gender

b. Section

2. What is the awareness of the respondents on proper waste segregation?

a. Grade 11

b. Grade 12

3. What is the practices of the respondents on proper waste segregation?

a. Grade 11

b. Grade 12
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The figure contains the conceptual framework of these research. It contains

the input, process, and output of this study.

The first box indicates the demographic profile of the students. The

researchers need to know the demographic profile of the students. It contains the

age, gender, and section of the students.

The second box indicates the process of this research. It contains the

dependent and independent variables of this study. In this box, the researchers were

going to conduct a survey to know and differentiate the level of awareness and

practices on proper waste segregation of GAS students in ALLSHS.

Lastly, the third box indicates the output of this study. The researchers were

going to interpret the survey and will put their interpretation if there is a significant in

level of awareness and practices of proper waste segregation of GAS students in

ALLSHS.
SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

This study aims to determine the level of awareness and practices of the

students in Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High School (ALLSHS). This research can

be used as a reference for further studies conducted in the same field and use as a

guide to implement programs. This study will highly beneficial to following;

Students

This study will not only beneficial to the students of ALLSHS but also to other

students of others schools that are willing to learn. It will help them to have proper

knowledge, understanding, and learnings about proper waste segregation.

Parents of the students

This study about properly waste segregation of the students would benefit the

parents by means of helping or guide their children to have a knowledge about waste

segregation through reading this study.

Teachers

Teachers can be a great help in persuading their students to have a good and

proper education. Their responsibility is to teach the students and assess them on

good quality education. Teacher would also benefit to this study by giving them

knowledge about waste management that they can teach to their students.

School facilitator

This study would be beneficial to the school facilitator because they need to

come up ideas on how they can reduce waste. By reading this study, they would be

able to come up ideas and strategies that can help them to minimize waste in the

school
Future researcher

This study would also be beneficial to the future researchers, as they further

study about waste management. The results of this study can be a great help for the

future researcher by gathering an idea in the same topic that this research is all

about and to have a successful research

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This research study entitled “Practices and Awareness on Proper Waste

Management of the students in Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High School

(ALLSHS) S.Y. 2019 – 2020” will only focus on practices and awareness on waste

management in terms of the gender and section of the students. It will also tackled

the incident and programs on waste management. Respondents are randomly

picked from grade 11 and 12 students, were 283 respondents are from grade 11 and

272 respondents from grade 12, a total of 555 respondents out of 1,805 total

population of the students in ALLSHS.

The domain or jurisdiction of this study will only focus on the students. It will

not cover other problems that are not consider as one of the scope in this study

because it can cause another new topic to occur. The study would be done through

the utilization of questionnaire to the students as a survey. By the researcher

strategies they will be able to know the practice and awareness on proper waste

management to the students in ALLSHS.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

In order to thoroughly understand this research, the following terms have

been defined.

 Waste – Also called solid waste, this refers to all discarded household,

commercial waste, non-hazardous institutional and industrial waste, street

sweepings, construction debris, agricultural waste and non-hazardous/non-

toxic solid waste (A.V., 2009).

 Waste Management - Refers to the discipline associated with the control of

generation, storage, collection, transfer and transport, processing, and

disposal of wastes in a manner that is in accord with the best principles of

public health, economics, engineer, conservation and other environmental

considerations, and that is also responsive to public attitudes (Republic Act

No. 9003 “Ecological Waste Management Act of 2002”).

 Waste Segregation – refers to a waste management practice of separating

different materials found in waste in order to promote recycling and reuse of

resources and to reduce the volume of waste for collection and disposal

(Boehike, 2015).

 Practices – Defined as to use an idea or actually put it into place. It also

refers to the act of continually doing something in order to get better at it

(Deriqutomano, 2013).

 Awareness – is an understanding of the activities of others, which provides a

context for your own (Julio, 2009).
