PROJECT DESCRIPTION

With the age of globalization, climate change and other developmental effects to
nature is inevitable. People in businesses are focused on activities that led to the
emittance of pollutants and hazardous materials that trigger harmful effects to the
environment.

These activities led to the increase of contributors to the climate change which is
the ignition point of all other phenomena, such as flashfloods, tsunamis, and the like.
With theses, the Girl Scouts of the Philippines in partnership with Laoac National High
School, PNP, BFP, DENR, LGU, SK, BHW and other stakeholders initiated to conduct a
tree planting activity in one of the barangays in the Municipality of Laoac.

SGS. Princess Anika T. Pregillana, a Grade 10 student of Laoac National High

School together with her Troop Leader, Mrs. Rhyslyn Rufin-Salinas, a Teacher III of the
same school, conducted a survey to assess the needs and concerns of the chosen
barangay. This could be the springboard of a project where the girl scouts can take
action and make a difference.

With series of community discussions, it was found out that one of the concerns
of the community people is the erosion of the riverbanks during heavy rains. This was
consulted with the community leaders and agreed that a tree planting activity could help
preserve the area and to prevent possible erosion.

Moreover, this worthwhile activity helps save our planet. It’s an activity that
people from different walks of life can join to be aware of the importance of trees. A tree
is a gift to everyone. It provides us with so many benefits needed for us to survive. It’s a
beautiful creation that has so many uses. A tree gives us fresh air by filtering it.

During a heavy storm, it works its magic by slowing down a heavy downpour thus
reducing the risk of floods. A tree during the summer season cools down our
surroundings. It’s long branches and leaves serve as a shade during a hot day. A tree
produces fruits that nourish our bodies. A tree aside from its many benefits also helps
people that live around it. It shows a positive effect on one’s mental and physical
wellbeing. It lessens stress to so many people in this busy.

A tree planting activity is a good way for the community to show that greener
earth is what we need. It encourages individuals and communities to save the
environment. It’s a learning experience for all who take part. It’s an activity that unites
society in building a better world.

OBJECTIVES
The project entitled “TREE PLANTING” aims to:

1. To add trees in the Barangay Cabulalaan to uphold a sustainable environment

for the next generation.

2. To plant trees along the river to prevent soil erosion caused by heavy rains and

flashfloods.

3. To inform every individual and raise awareness on the importance of tree

planting to humans and animals.

4. To involve the barangay officials and stakeholders in the tree planting activity to

help reduce and lessen the greenhouse gasses and fight climate change.

5. To create natural pollution filters and to bring fresher and breathable air for the

community.

6. To increase the local fuelwood supply of Barangay Calaoagan.

Environmental & Social Benefits of Tree Planting
When done well, tree planting is recognized as one of the most engaging,
environmentally friendly activities that people can take part in to better the planet.
Trees provide a multitude of benefits, both long and short term. As well as being
attractive aesthetically, they remove and store carbon from the atmosphere, slow
heavy rain and so reduce the risk of flooding, enhance air quality and improve the
urban heat island effect by reflecting sunlight and providing shade. In addition, the
physical weight of a tree consists of approximately 50% carbon, as such trees have a
strong climate change mitigation effect when in high enough numbers. Some of
these benefits such as the mitigation of the urban heat island effect and
improvements to air quality are localized and will bring the most benefits to the
people who live and otherwise spend their time in the local area. Other benefits such
as the removal of carbon from the atmosphere will benefit the wider population, not
just those who live the most locally.
Trees greatly benefit the people living around them by having a positive
impact on mental health and wellbeing, reducing stress and encouraging outdoor
exercise. This is in addition to the benefits they will receive from an improved
environmental quality and improved amenity which comes with planted areas.

Benefits
There are numerous benefits that the project brings to the community:

 Builds community spirit and unity

 Educates communities about the benefits of trees and nature

 Brings economic benefits to an area by reducing green-space maintenance costs

and by raising house prices on aesthetic grounds

 Positive impact on mental health and wellbeing, reducing stress and encouraging
outdoor activities

 Removes and stores Carbon from the air

 Reduces flood risk

 Creates wildlife habitat

 Provides shade

 Reduces green space maintenance costs

 Provides oxygen

 Cleans the air, absorbs odors and pollutants

 Prevents soil erosion

 Provides food

 Increases pollinator numbers

 Trees benefit the soil conditions

 Reduces pollutants

Education

Forest provides local communities with the opportunity to plant trees and learn
about nature and woodlands. Tree planting days are designed to educate and enable
the public to play a part in establishing a Forest for Peterborough. During event days
people are taught how to plant a tree use tools correctly and have general
conversations around the importance of biodiversity and how they can develop and
protect a woodland environment, as well as teaching the important role trees have
played through the centuries and their relevance today. In addition to learning tree
planting skills, communities learn about all aspects of tree maintenance and care, as
well as the different species being planted, and further knowledge around pest and
diseases, land management and conservation.
Planting trees vastly improves the quality of our natural surroundings. Forests
and copses of trees reduce the risks of soil erosion, enhance the water quality in
streams and ponds, and protect groundwater supplies. Forests store water on the
canopy, leaves, and stems of trees but water is also absorbed and retained in plant
tissue before being released back into the environment through a combination of
evaporation and transpiration.
Trees play a pivotal role in the hydrologic cycle; the complex process and
sequence of conditions that allow water to be converted from vapor in the
atmosphere to precipitation on land and back into vapor through evaporation and
transpiration. This process has an impact on surface and soil moisture, ecology,
vegetation, animal life, and sedimentation, making it crucial to our survival on earth.
Fallow land and areas where large scale tree removal has occurred are far
more susceptible to soil erosion. Without vegetation, rain is either absorbed by the
soil or runs off into streams as surface drainage. During storms and heavy rainfall,
surface runoff becomes excessive and loose topsoil is eroded and washed away.
When the topsoil or organic soil layer is eroded the mineral soil layer is exposed and
once this happens, little or no vegetation will grow in the area to stabilize the bare
earth and mudslides and rockslides become more common.

The Characteristics & Qualities of a Good Leader

Integrity
The importance of integrity should be obvious. Though it may not necessarily be
a metric in employee evaluations, integrity is essential for the individual and the
organization. It’s especially important for top-level executives who are charting the
organization’s course and making countless other significant decisions. Our research
shows that integrity may actually be a potential blind spot for organizations. Make sure
your organization reinforces the importance of integrity to leaders at various levels.

Ability to Delegate

Delegating is one of the core responsibilities of a leader, but it can be tricky to

delegate effectively. The goal isn’t just to free yourself up — it’s also to enable your
direct reports, facilitate teamwork, provide autonomy, lead to better decision-making,
and help your direct reports grow. In order to delegate well, you also need to build trust
with your team.

Communication

Effective leadership and effective communication are intertwined. You need to be

able to communicate in a variety of ways, from transmitting information to coaching your
people. And you must be able to listen to, and communicate with, a wide range of
people across roles, social identities, and more. The quality and effectiveness of
communication across your organization directly affect the success of your business
strategy, too. Learn how better conversations can actually improve your organizational
culture.

Self-Awareness

While this is a more inwardly focused skill, self-awareness is paramount for

leadership. The better you understand yourself, the more effective you can be. Do you
know how other people view you or how you show up at work? Take the time to learn
about the 4 aspects of self-awareness and how you can strengthen each component.

Gratitude

Being thankful can make you a better leader. Gratitude can lead to higher self-
esteem, reduced depression and anxiety, and even better sleep. Few people regularly
say “thank you” at work, even though most people say they’d be willing to work harder
for an appreciative boss. Learn how to give thanks and practice more gratitude in the
workplace.

Learning Agility

Learning agility is the ability to know what to do when you don’t know what to do.
Anybody can foster learning agility through practice, experience, and effort. Explore how
great leaders are great learners, with strong learning agility to get started.

Influence

For some people, “influence” feels like a dirty word. But being able to convince
people through logical, emotional, or cooperative appeals is a component of being an
inspiring, effective leader. Influence is quite different from manipulation, and it needs to
be done authentically and transparently. It requires emotional intelligence and trust.
Learn more about how effective influencing can be a game-changer.

Empathy

Empathy is correlated with job performance and is a critical part of emotional

intelligence and leadership effectiveness. If you show more inclusive leadership and
empathetic behaviors towards your direct reports, our research shows you’re more likely
to be viewed as a better performer by your boss. Plus, empathy and inclusion are
imperatives for improving workplace conditions for those around you.

Courage

It can be hard to speak up at work, whether you want to voice a new idea,
provide feedback to a direct report, or flag a concern for someone above you. That’s
part of the reason courage is a key skill for good leaders. Rather than avoiding
problems or allowing conflicts to fester, courage enables leaders to step up and move
things in the right direction. A workplace with high levels of psychological safety and a
strong coaching culture will further support truth and courage.

Respect

Treating people with respect on a daily basis is one of the most important things
a leader can do. It will ease tensions and conflict, create trust, and improve
effectiveness. Respect is more than the absence of disrespect, and it can be shown in
many different ways. Explore how you can cultivate a climate of respect at work or learn
more about becoming an ally to others.

Develop the Qualities of a Good Leader

Organizations can strengthen leadership skills and foster deeper levels of

engagement at work through providing a variety of development opportunities, ranging
from on-the-job learning and mentoring to more formal virtual coaching or leadership
development programs.

But individuals don’t have to wait to begin strengthening these characteristics

and qualities of a good leader within themselves — you can start today.

Being a good leader isn't easy. While a leader's actions may be scrutinized when
things are going bad, it is their leadership qualities that shine through the worst of times.
It is these same qualities that employees look up to, respect, and work very hard for.
This is why it is so important for every leader to work hard to gain the qualities of
great leadership.

when the cutting, destroying, damaging or injuring is necessary for public safety or the
pruning thereof is necessary to enhance beauty, and only upon the approval of the duly
authorized representative of the head of agency or political subdivision having
jurisdiction therein, or of the Director of Forest Development in the case of trees on
banks of rivers and creeks, or of the owner of the land subdivision in the case of trees
along roads and in other areas therein for the common use of owners of lots therein. If
the offender is a corporation, partnership or association, the penalty shall be imposed
upon the officer or officers thereof responsible for the offense, and if such officer or
officers are aliens, in addition to the penalty herein prescribed, he or they shall be
deported without further proceedings before the Commission on Immigration and
Deportation. Nothing in this Decree shall prevent the cancellation of a license
agreement, lease, license or permit from the Government, if such cancellation is
prescribed therein or in Government regulations for such offense.
