Microbiology

This is a self-paced course with continuous enrollment

$40.00
Microbiology is a course that is the nemesis of many in that it frequently forces students
to reevaluate their career goals. This is an updated version of the Microbiology course that was
taught at the University of Colorado for several years. It is intended for students who have
struggled with the topic in the past, or for those who desire a “pre-course” to familiarize
themselves with the subject before they must take it for credit at their college or university. The
online course involves the development of virtual lab exercises versus the wet laboratory
experiments that were a part of the in-class version of the course. As Microbiology is a topic
that builds throughout the course, it is cumulative and students should be expected to be tested
on material learned in previous lessons throughout the duration of the course.

This course is geared to those who plan to enter the medical professions. Thus it is ideal
for those planning to enter medical, veterinary, pharmacy, dental, physical therapy, physicians’
assistant, nursing, medical technology, occupational therapy, epidemiology, public health, and
other medical programs and professions. It is a rigorous course that will almost certainly
improve a student’s performance in the classroom when they must take the course for credit.

The course will deal at length with the following Topics:

• Lesson 1 – Microbial Chemistry
• Lesson 2 – The Scope of Microbiology
• Lesson 3 – Microbe Staining and Microscopy
• Lesson 4 – Growth of Microorganisms
• Lesson 5 – Physical & Chemical Control of Microorganisms
• Lesson 6 – Cultivation and Nutrition of Microorganisms
• Lesson 7 – Microbial Metabolism
• Lesson 8 – Eukaryotic Structure and Pathogenic Organisms
• Lesson 9 – Viruses and Prions
• Lesson 10 – Viruses of Clinical Importance
• Lesson 11 – Microbial Genetics
• Lesson 12 – Normal Flora of the Human Body
• Lesson 13 – Pathogenic Prokaryotic Microorganisms
• Lesson 14 – Antimicrobial Agents
• Lesson 15 – Non-Specific Host Resistance
• Lesson 16 – The Immune Response – Specific Resistance
