think much of it. Imagine if that minor cut became so infected with bacteria that it
may killed you. Before the 1940s, that really did happen alot, the most minor
injuries could be deadly and then a discovery was made that changed the world.
Penicillin, the first of the modern wonder drugs known as antibiotics.
Penicillin was discovered totally by accident.
In 1928, a scientist named Alexander Fleming found it when spores from a colony
of the mold Penicillium notatum landed in the petri dish that contains the
Staphylococcus bacteria. He found that around this colony of mold is a zone clear
of bacteria.
During his studying of this mysterious phenomena, Fleming came to realize that
the mold was producing a certain type of compound that was killing the bacteria
and supressing the growth of bacteria. He decided to name the substance from the
mold: Penicillin
However, his work on penicillin was limited, he found it difficult to isolate and
purify the substance. It was not until 1939, a group of scientists led by Howard
Florey and Ernst Chain (researchers) figured out(managed) how to isolate the
active compound and develop methods to produce penicillin in larger quantities.
During World War 2, Penicillin was produced on a large scale and used intreating
wounded soilders. It hailed as a miracle drug that saved countless lives during the
war. For the time beings, it remain some of the most important life-saving
antibiotics used in medicine. The discovery of Penicillin also help in finding other
antibiotics that are used in everything from vaccines to cancers drugs(treatment).
Ques: Because antibiotics attack bacteria that are living in your body, they’re
most effective when you’re already sick with an infection. This is different
from vaccines, which shield you from bacteria or viruses that you might
encounter in the future.
Function: Antibiotics are medications used to treat bacterial infections. They
work by directly killing bacteria or inhibiting their growth, allowing the
body's immune system to eliminate the infection. Vaccines, on the other hand,
are preventive measures designed to stimulate the immune system and provide
immunity against specific diseases.
Target: Antibiotics target bacteria, which are living organisms that can cause
infections. They are ineffective against viral infections. Vaccines, on the other
hand, target viruses, bacteria, or other pathogens that cause specific diseases.
Yes. Confusingly, some vaccines contain tiny amounts of antibiotics. Antibiotics
are sometimes added to vaccines to keep bacteria from contaminating them during
the manufacturing process.
Anthracyclines are a class of chemotherapy drugs that are also antibiotics
Standard preparation of penicillin for use. Distilled water 10cc is added to sealed
viale containing 100,000 units of sodium penicillin.
