B. KEY CONCEPTS
Good Day, today you will be going to learn about the PECs and important characteristics should be
possessed by an individual in order to perform entrepreneurial functions effectively.
To start this module, first you need to understand the entrepreneur and entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneurs are those with the skills and capabilities to see and evaluate business opportunities. They
are the individuals who creates a new business, bearing most of the risk and enjoying most of the rewards.
Entrepreneurship is the process of discovering a new way of combining resources, or the process of
starting a new business.
Now that you have small knowledge about entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship, you may now walk
through your module in assessing your PECs.
Entrepreneurial competencies refer to the important skills and characteristics that possessed by and
individual entrepreneurs, in order to perform all the entrepreneurial functions needed to be effectively work.
Below are some of the important characteristics and skills needed of a good entrepreneur:
1. Self-motivation
When you want to succeed, you need to be able to push
yourself, you need to be dedicated to what your plan and keep
moving forward, even you aren’t receiving any rewards.
2. Take Risks
Understanding calculated risks that are more likely to pay off is an
important part of being an entrepreneur. Sometimes it’s important
to take risks than playing it safe, playing it safe never leads to a
success as a business owner.

3. Flexibility
You need to be a flexible, be willing to accept a change, stay on top of your
industry. You need to be flexibility in your thinking. This is an essential part of
problem-solving if you want to be able to find unique and effective solutions on
issues. You need to stretch your abilities or skills.
1. Passion
Successful entrepreneurs are passionate. This what will help you find
motivation when you are discouraged and it will drive your motivation and it will
make you think forward. Passion is the fuel of for successful entrepreneurship.
2. Tenacity
Developing a new concept inevitability involves a testing period of trial and error,
redrafting plans in the light of feedback from customers and suppliers. Commitment
sometimes needed to test in order to make or have a successful concept or plans.
3. Vision
This is where sometimes the entrepreneurs fails, yes, your good at solving specific
problems or issues, but do you have an eye on the bigger picture of yourself or on your
career? a true entrepreneur has a notion of where he or she wants the business to be in
five or 20 years.
Every goal that we set out to reach is most effectively met with certain skills, capacities,
behaviors and abilities. I recommend looking at the goals you currently have and making a list
of skills, capacities, behaviors and abilities (SCBA’s) that you say are most needed to fully satisfy
that goal.
Assess yourself on which are you already strong and effective with? in
which are you okay, what do you need to enhance, or are you either weak in or
perhaps don’t have the SCBA’s at all.
For those areas that needs development, find others who are
demonstrating those skills, find information on how they develop those SCBA’s, what
would you need to put in practice that would support the development of those in
yourself.
Comparing yourself to others isn’t useful, but my recommendation is not comparison, it’s about
considering what is needed for where you are headed.
Why is there a need to compare and align one’s PECs with PEC’s of Successful Entrepreneur? it is vital
that entrepreneur will benchmark his /her personal entrepreneurial skills to successful one, because the traits of
a successful entrepreneur is proven to have a guarantee for success. An entrepreneur should use this in order
to identify the traits that he /she possess and to overcome all of the hurdles of business.
Why is it a PEC’s of a successful entrepreneur is reliable by just benchmarking his / her skills? It is
because it is based on real life situation and it was proven effective to use. And if the entrepreneur will become
aware that there are traits that is not present on their personal, he / she must train to develop those traits, and
if the entrepreneur will follow those traits, it will surely lead to a successful on facing those problems
encountered.

A. OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
a. identify the players / competitors within the town; and
b. identify the different products/ services available in the market.
B. KEY CONCEPTS
Good Day, today you will be going to learn about the Key concepts of market, who are the players in the
market, and the products and services available in the market.
An aspiring entrepreneur needs to explore the economic, cultural and social
conditions prevailing in an area. To be successful in any kind of business venture,
entrepreneurs should look closely at the environment and market. They should
always be watchful of existing opportunities and constraints and to take calculated risks.
Identifying the needs of the community, its resources, available raw materials, skills, and
appropriate technology can help a new entrepreneur seize business opportunities.
SWOT Analysis is a managerial tool used to assess the environment. It is used to gather important
information which is used in strategic planning. Strengths and weaknesses are internal in an
organization. They relate to resources owned by an organization that you have control over and
also the extent of its marketing.
Opportunities and threats exist in the external environment. Opportunities relate to the
market, new technologies, and the external factors such as government policies, climate, and
trends. Threats replace what the competitors are doing. It also includes legal and other constraints.
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
The development in this module refers to collectively to the entire process of identifying a market
opportunity, creating a product to appeal to identified market, testing, modifying, and refining the product until
it becomes ready for production.
There are basic, yet vital questions that you can ask yourself about product development. The following
questions includes:
1. For whom are the product/ services aimed at?
2. What benefit will the customers expect from product/services?
3. How will the product/services differ from the existing brand? From its competitor?
Basic Education Department – SHS Learning Module in Computer System Servicing NC II COC 1 Page 8 of 13
Here are some the examples of product development in computer systems servicing:
1. The releasing of AMD and INTEL processors (CPU), these 2 companies are competing in the
market for almost 40 years up until now, and they always keep on developing their
processors to be faster and more multi-tasking in handling a software or programs.
2. The Hard Disk Drive (HDD) to Solid State Drive (SSD), we all know that HDD is one of the
sensitive parts of the computer hardware’s, because of the disk inside of it, and finally they
develop a faster in booting up and can be more boost up your applications in running it or
using it, and this product is called the Solid-State Drive (SSD).
And don’t forget the needs and wants of people within the target area or location to be considered.
Everyone has his/her own needs and wants, and every each of one of them are differ from their needs and
wants.
Basic needs are essential to an individual to live with dignity and pride in a
community. These needs can obviously help you generate business ideas and subsequently
to product development.
Wants are desires, luxury and extravagance that signify wealth and expensive way
of living. These wants or desires or expensive way of living are fashion, accessories, watching
movies, having luxurious car.
The needs and wants of people are the basic indicators of the kind of business that you may engage in,
because it can serve as the measure of your success.
This is the critical phase in development of a product. In this stage, the needs of target market are
identified, and competitive products are reviewed before the product specifications are defined. The world is
changing in terms of values and attitudes, needs and demands for products, services and technologies.
Listening to the customers voice is more important than ever to ensure new products, services
and technologies meet customer’s needs.
2. Idea Generation
After collecting the information’s, it is time to develop a new product or services and technologies
for these uncovered needs.
3. Idea Screening
In this step, you may need to identifies the most promising ideas and provides relevant indications
for their selection and optimization. The selected idea must need to meet the user’s needs.
4. Idea optimization
After screening the selected ideas and classified, these raw ideas should be optimized based on
customers feedback or reviews, or refer to the surveys of customers.
5. Prototyping
Based on the most promising concept chosen, prototype of your product, service or technology
is developed and optimized according to the target group or target customer’s needs.

FINDING VALUE
The product / service that you put or sell on the target market, there must be something or unique that
will make you the best option for your target customers, otherwise they have no reason to buy your products
or services on what you are selling. Then what you will do to make you’re the best option; you must offer
something to your customer, for example: discounts on first buy, promotions, or something unique that will
guarantee that the customers will buy your product/ services.
The value that you will incorporate to your product is called value proposition. This value
proposition is a collection of the most persuasive reasons on why people on the target market
should notice on your product/services and taking action on what you’re asking for, it is where
the people gets people keep on coming on your store to buy your product or avail services.
INNOVATION
Innovation is the introduction of something new to your product / services. If you want to increase your
sales or profit, you must innovate. This includes a new idea, new method, new device, or new features, and you
must also indicate the specification of your product / services, new packaging, improvement of taste, color, size,
shape, or price. Possible innovations in providing the good services are the new features, improved methods,
additional featured services, or possibly freebies.
Unique Selling Proposition is the factor or consideration presented by a seller as the reason that one
product or service is different from other. Business with a unique selling proposition stand for something specific,
and it becomes what you’re known for.
Many businesses make the mistake of attempting to stand for everything when they first
get started. They want to do everything well. They want to be known for having best quality
product/ services, they want to be known to be the lowest or cheapest price, or they want to be
known in the market to be the best in all aspects of selling methods, but they don’t know that
there’s a problem and the problem is that “When you attempt to be known for everything, you don’t become
known for everything.”
