REMOTE-OUTPUT DRIVER MODULES,

MODELS ATM-L AND ATM-R
1-1 DESCRIPTION
The Model ATM-L Annunciator Driver Module, P/N 74-300004-032, provides Fenwal intelligent systems with
up to 32 programmable outputs for remote LEDs, along with six (6) system-level LEDs and five (5) system-
level functional switches.
The system-level LEDs correspond to the following general conditions:
• Module Power/Lockout
• Alarm
• Pre-Alarm
• Alarm Silence
• Supervisory
• Trouble
The functional switches provide for the following operator intervention:
• System Reset
• Event Acknowledgment
• Alarm Silence
• Fire Drill
• Lamp Test
ATM-Ls will not respond to local commands from functional switches for ten (10) seconds after a key is pressed
on the keypad/display of the control unit. A flashing module-power LED will signify this lockout condition.
The Model ATM-R Relay Driver Module, P/N 74-300005-032, provides the system with up to 32 programmable
outputs for remote relays.
The ATM-L and -R Modules communicate with the control unit via an external RS-485 communications circuit,
with the most remote module capable of being located up to 4,000 feet from the control unit. Up to 31 ATM-Ls and
ATM-Rs, in any combination but subject to a limitation of 16 for each type of driver module, can be connected in
a daisy-chained loop to the RS-485 communications circuit. No “t-tapping” is allowed in the communications
circuit.
Both modules can be powered from the intelligent control unit's power supply, or from an external, regulated and
power-limited power supply listed for use with fire protective signaling systems, depending upon the total load of
the remote outputs. A typical external power supply is Fenwal P/N 89-300022-001.
Note: Refer to the appropriate control unit design, installation and maintenance manual for auxiliary power
output ratings.
When using any other listed power supply to power either the ATM-L or ATM-R, ensure that the power supply has
a means to isolate the common-negative power line from earth ground to prevent system ground faults. Both the
ATM-L and ATM-R have an initiating circuit labeled “PS FLT” to monitor a normally-closed power supply fault
contact. Refer to Figures 2, 3 and 4.
A FenwalNET 2000 Control Unit with Version 81.0 or higher firmware or a FenwalNET 6000 Control Unit is required
to support the ATM-L and ATM-R Modules. The system configuration must be entered via Fenwal Configuration Software
(FCS) Version 8.2 or higher, for FN-2000 Control Units or FCS6000 for FN-6000 Control Units.

3-1 POWER SUPPLY CALCULATION

3-1.1 ATM-L Power Supply Calculation

ATM-Ls will operate down to 16.0 Vdc. If the nominal power supply output is 24 Vdc, the minimum system voltage
after 24 hours of battery operation is 20.4 Vdc. Therefore, the maximum voltage drop to any ATM-L is 4.4 Vdc.
Calculate the total ATM-L current and maximum power-line resistance using the following procedure.
1. Count the total number of output LEDs from all ATM-Ls that will be powered from the control unit power supply.
Output LED current:
# LEDs x 0.012 = ____A
2. Count the total number of ATM-Ls.
ATM-L current:
# ATM-Ls x 0.045 = ____A
3. Count the total number of ATM-Ls whose status lights will be powered from the control unit power supply.
Status LED current:
#ATM-Ls x 0.072 = ____A
4. Add 1 + 2 + 3 for total current from the control unit power supply ____A
5. Calculate maximum allowable resistance.
Divide 4.4 Vdc by total current (Step 4)____ohms

January 2006 3 06-236179-001

Remote-Output Drive Modules

Example:
• ATM-L # 1 has 20 point- or group-specific output LEDs.
• ATM-L #2 has 15 point- or group-specific output LEDs.
• ATM-L #3 has 8 point- or group-specific output LEDs.
• All ATM-Ls are utilizing the system status lights.
• All outputs will be powered by a Fenwal intelligent control unit power supply.
• Total LEDs = 43
• Total output LED current = 43 x 0.012 = 0.516 A
• Total ATM-Ls = 3
• Total ATM-L current = 3 x 0.045 = 0.135 A
• Total ATM-Ls status lights
• Total Status LED current = 3 x 0.072 = 0.216 A
• Total Current = 0.867 A
• Maximum Power-Line Resistance = 4.4 V/0.867 A = 5.1 ohms

3-1.2 ATM-R Power Supply Calculation

ATM-Rs will also operate down to 16.0 Vdc. If the nominal power supply output is 24 Vdc, the minimum system
voltage after 24 hours of battery operation is 20.4 Vdc. Use UL Listed/Recognized relays with a nominal 24 Vdc
rating, and with an operating voltage range between 18.0 and 30.0 Vdc. Refer to the manufacturer supplied
information for listed operating voltage range.
Relay coil currents vary widely from about 15 mA to 80 mA. Refer to the manufacturer’s data sheet for the coil
current of the specific relay being utilized in the application.
Calculate the total ATM-R current and maximum power-line resistance using the following procedure.
1. Count total number of output relays from all ATM-Rs that will be powered from the control unit power supply.
Output relay current:
# relays x current/relay = ____A
2. Count the total number of ATM-Rs.
ATM-R current:
# ATM-Rs x 0.045 = ____A
3. Add 1 + 2 for total current from the control unit power supply ____A
4. Calculate maximum allowable resistance. Use the minimum relay operating voltage of 18 Vdc in this calculation.
Divide 2.4 Vdc by total current (Step 3)
_____ohms
Example:
• An ATM-R has 15 relay outputs. Each relay has a coil current of 25 mA.
• All outputs will be powered by a Fenwal intelligent control unit power supply.
• Total Relays = 15
• Total output Relay current = 15 x .025 = 0.375 A
• Total ATM-Rs = 1
• Total ATM-R current = 1 x 0.045 = 0.045 A
• Total Current = 0.420 A
• Maximum Power-Line Resistance 2.4 V/0.420A = 5.7 ohms
