Quarter 1 – Module 1: CONSUMER HEALTH

As an adolescent, there are so many things that concern you. It is important that you learn
the skill of making good decisions in order for you to live a healthy and normal life.
This module will help you understand the basics of consumer health. Consumer health
targets to develop a person’s ability to evaluate and utilize health information, products, and
services wisely and effectively.
I- OBJECTIVE/S:
This module aims for you to be able to:
1. explain the guidelines and criteria in the selection and evaluation of health information,
products and services. (H10CH-Ia-b-20)
• Quackery- a form of health fraud; any advertisement, promotion, or sale that have
not been scientifically proven safe and effective” (Meeks, et al,2011)
• Nutrition Quackery- involves promotion of food fads and other nutritional practices
that claim to be all-natural; believed to have beneficial properties of multiple plants
in one product
• Device Quackery- makes use of miraculous gadgets that are believed to cure certain
health conditions

III- PRE-TEST

it comes to protecting and taking care of her new born son. She always let him wear
bronze every time they go out believing that it will protect her son from evil spirits.
_____5. Teacher Jenna, as advised by her doctor, always wears braces for her back
to correct her bad posture.

Alena: Mom, I’m home! Ana is with me to help me with some homework.
Mother: (looking at Alena and Ana) Hello there! What a pleasant surprise, Ana! I
haven’t seen you for a long while. How have you been?
Ana: I am doing really great, Mrs. Santos. It’s nice to see you, too!
Mother: I see you are doing well! You have grown taller and more beautiful!
Alena: (talking to Ana) See! I told you your looks have improved so much! I think it’s
time you tell me your little secret about getting rid of your pimples. I have some now, and
I do not feel very good about it.
Mother: (laughing) Oh, well. I am leaving the two of you be. I will prepare some
snacks, so you can focus on doing your homework.
Ana: Oh, Alena. Of course, I’ll share it to you! It’s jus the soap that I am using. You
see, I went to a dermatologist with my Mom when my pimples got so concerning. The
doctor gave me some advice on my eating habits and gave me a certain soap that helps
fight acne and pimples.
Alena: Is it safe to use? Doesn’t it have any bad side effects? Isn’t your skin is too
young for beauty soaps?
Ana: It is not a beauty soap. It is more like a medical one. Sure, it is safe to use. It is
prescribe by my doctor, remember? If you look into the packaging of the soap, there is a
disclosure of everything you have to know about the product such us how to use it, when
to use it, and when to stop using it. If you want, we can look it up online and see what the
reviews are.
Alena: Wow! The reviews are really good! It seems like the product has already
helped a lot of teenagers like us in dealing with their pimple issues. I should tell Mother
about this! Thank you so much, Ana for sharing your secret to me. You are the best!
