HW#1

1. A car weighing 120kN is pulled up an inclined track by a steel cable. The cable has a cross-sectional area of 300 mm^2 and the incline angle is 45°. Calculate the tensile stress in the cable. 2. Solve the previous problem if the tailgate mass is 27kg and crate mass is 68kg. The cable area is 12.0 mm^2. Find the tensile force and normal stress in each cable. 3. A symmetrical framework with three pin-connected bars is loaded by a force P. The middle bar axial strain is 0.07. Determine the tensile stress in the outer bars made of aluminum alloy.

Mechanics of Materials and Lab’s assignment#1

Due April 5th 2pm.

1. A car weighing 120kN when fully loaded is pulled slowly up a steep inclined track by a
steel cable (see figure). The cable has an effective cross-sectional area of 300 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚2 and the
angle α of the incline is 45°. Calculate the tensile stress 𝜎𝜎𝑡𝑡 in the cable.

2. Solve the preceding problem if the mass of the tail gate is 𝑀𝑀𝑇𝑇 = 27kg and that of the crate
is 𝑀𝑀𝐶𝐶 = 68kg. Use dimensions H = 305 mm, L = 406 mm, 𝑑𝑑𝐶𝐶 = 460 mm, and 𝑑𝑑𝑇𝑇 = 350
mm. The cable cross-sectional area is 𝐴𝐴𝑒𝑒 = 12.0 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚2

3. A symmetrical framework consisting of three pin connected bars is loaded by a force P (see
figure). The angle between the inclined bars and the horizontal is α = 45°. The axial strain
in the middle bar is measured as 0.07.

Determine the tensile stress in the outer bars if they are constructed of aluminum alloy
having the stress-strain diagram shown in Fig. 1-13. (Express the stress in USCS units.)

The steel plane truss shown in the figure is loaded by three forces P, each of which is 450kN.
The truss members each have a cross-sectional area of 3700 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚2 and are connected by
pins each with a diameter of 𝑑𝑑𝑝𝑝 = 15mm. Members AC and BC each consist of one bar
with thickness of 𝑡𝑡𝐴𝐴𝐶𝐶 = 𝑡𝑡𝐵𝐵𝐶𝐶 = 17mm. Member AB is composed of two bars [see figure part
(b)] each having thickness 𝑡𝑡𝐴𝐴𝐵𝐵 /2 = 10 mm. Thickness of each support is 𝑡𝑡𝑠𝑠𝑝𝑝 /2 = 10 mm.

(a) Find support reactions at joints A and B and forces in members AB, BC, and AB.

(b) Calculate the largest average shear stress 𝜏𝜏𝑝𝑝,𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 in the pin at joint B, disregarding
friction between the members; see figure parts (b) and (c) for section views of the joint.

(c) Calculate the largest average bearing stress 𝜎𝜎𝑏𝑏,𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 acting against the pin at joint B.
