Grade 10 Mathematics

Square Root
Square root is the inverse of square. As such we can find square roots of perfect squares by
inspecting squares.

Activity 1:- Fill in the blanks

i. 32 = 9 as such √ 9 = _________
ii. 52 = 25 as such √ 25 = _________
iii. 72 = 49 as such √ 49 = _________
iv. 122 = ______ as such √ ¿¿ = _________
v. 252 = ______ as such √ ¿¿ = _________

Prime Numbers:- Prime numbers are only divisible (could be exactly divided) by one and the
number itself. 2 is the only even prime number.

Activity 2:- Underline prime numbers in the following list 3, 7, 9, 13, 25. 400, 401, 675, 711

Square root using prime Factors

Square roots of perfect squares could be found by factorising them into prime factors.
Steps
1. Factorise the number in to prime factors completely.
2. Take one number from each pair of prime factors and multiply them to get the
square root.

Exercise 1:- Find square roots of 441, 144, 2500, 676, 1225, 1754 and 11025.

Approximate for Square Root by Inspecting

An approximate (closer) value for square root to first decimal place could be found by
inspecting squares of numbers with decimals.
Steps:-
1. Find two consecutive whole numbers such that the number required finding the
square root lies between those numbers.
Eg:- Find the square root of 51
Then the square root lies between the
square roots of those numbers. 49 < 51 < 64
2. Find the closer prefect root. 7 < √ 51 <64
51 is closer to 49 than 64
3. If the smaller perfect root is closer
7.1 7.2
a. Start with one decimal higher than it, 7.1 7.2
multiply by itself and check. ----------- -----------
b. Increase by one decimal multiply by
itself and check.
----------- -----------
c. Repeat step b as necessary.
4. If the larger perfect root is closer =======
Eg:- Find the square=======
root of 61

49 < 51 < 64
7 < √ 51 <64
61 is closer to 64 than 49
7.9 7.8
7.9 7.8
a. Start with nine decimal higher than smaller square root, multiply by itself and
check.
b. Decrease by one decimal multiply by itself and check.
c. Repeat step b as necessary.

Exercise 2:- Find square roots to first decimal place of 32, 79, 135, 622 and 891 by
inspection.
Approximate for Square Root by dividing
As a square is calculated by multiplying a number by itself, we can find square roots by
dividing but the divider and the answer should be same.
Steps:-
1. Break the number on to groups of two digits starting from the last digit. For decimal
numbers start from the decimal dot.
Activity 3:- Group 2234, 34567, 332.563, 10000.89 and 0.3456238 according to the
step1.
2. Divide the number in the first group so that the divider and the answer are same.
3. Get the balance and take the two numbers on the next group down.
4. Multiply the previous answer by two and write in front of previous numbers.
5. Add a last digit and write it as the answer of current division.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 up to required accuracy.

Activity 4:-
Find the square root of 562 Find the square root of 1562

Exercise 3:-
1. Repeat exercise 2 using the method of division.
2. The area of a square is 625cm2, find the length of a side.
3. The area of a square is equal to a rectangle of 6cm length and 24cm width, find the
length of a side.
4. Find the value of v, using v2 = u2 + 2as, when u = 10, a = 5 and s = 2.4.
5. The area of an isosceles rectangular triangle is 128cm2 find the length of a side to the
first decimal place.
