IV. PROCEDURES
A. Introduction What I need to know?
We are living in a world where everything is connected. We are surrounded by
people, objects and ideas that are linked together. In other words, we are
surrounded by analogies. They are so useful that they become part of our day-to-
day communication. Writers use analogies in their work to form a remarkable
comparison and to help the readers understand their point.
Analogy plays an important role in problem solving, decision-making,
argumentation, perception, generalization, memory, creativity, invention,
prediction, emotion, explanation, conceptualization, and communication.
Comparing two things, pointing out the similarities or likeness between
things that might be different in all other aspects is a good skill to develop.
Critical thinking skill has been one of the most essential skills required in 21 st
century learners. If you wish to develop such a skill, you should enhance first
your vocabulary skill to better understand the words to compare. Although this
application is the one most used in the educational context, and knowledge and
training within that context help every student improve his or her access to higher
education. Understanding relationships and constructing parallel relationships are
useful lifelong learning skills.
This lesson was designed to help you understand and supply other words or
expressions that complete an analogy.

What is it?
An analogy shows the relationships between words. It states the likeness between
two things that are otherwise unlike. Analogies may enable one to learn new
words by recognizing the relationship between words.
Examples:
The above stated example vividly shows the connection between English and
Language and Mathematics and Arithmetic. English is basically a subject that is
focused on language while Mathematics deals primarily with Arithmetic or
numbers.
The colon is used to split the analogy into two parts. The first part is the left-hand
side of the double colon, “English: Language,” while the second part is the
righthand side, “Mathematics: Arithmetic.” Keep in mind that the first set of
words presents a relationship that is the same or alike as the second set of words.
One possible way to read or verbalize an analogy is like this example:
