AquaTech ISDA Key: Aquaculture for the Future

March 24, 2023

Biofloc technology (also known as BFT) and recirculating aquaculture systems

(also known as RAS) are two crucial elements of contemporary aquaculture. Traditional
methods of fish farming in open water are becoming unsustainable because to the
detrimental effects they have on the ecosystem as the demand for fish and other types
of seafood around the world continues to increase. By optimizing the utilization of
resources while simultaneously limiting their influence on the environment, BFT and
RAS provide a solution to this challenge that is both sustainable and effective.
The seminar held on March 24, 2023 and titled AquaTech ISDA key: Aquaculture
for the future was an excellent opportunity for participants to learn about the most recent

developments in aquaculture. The seminar was led by a group of students in their fourth
year of the Bachelor of Science in Fisheries program. Mr. Angelito Castro, a former
overseas Filipino worker who now owns and operates his own successful aquaculture
firm, spoke at the session. Mr. Castro discussed the RAS and Biofloc technologies,
which are two essential elements of contemporary aquaculture, and shared his
experiences as well as his insights. He underlined that despite the high cost of the RAS
investment, it is simple to administer and has a low amount of water use as well as
wastage. In the meanwhile, Biofloc is a natural, cost-effective, and ecologically
acceptable technique of aquaculture that utilizes bacteria to give an alternative system.
Biofloc is a low-cost system. In addition to this, Mr. Castro emphasized the need of
learning information and abilities through hands-on experience when it comes to the
sector of aquaculture. He also remarked that fish farming here in the Philippines is
impractical because of the country's relative isolation from other nations.
Learning about RAS and biofloc can give students with insights into creative and
environmentally responsible practices in aquaculture. Students may gain a better
understanding of the necessity of water quality management, the conservation of
resources, and effective production methods in the aquaculture business through the
use of this resource. In addition, learning about RAS and biofloc can provide information
on the role that technological and scientific improvements play in enhancing the long-
term viability of aquaculture operations and increasing their overall profitability.

PROFITABLE AND SUSTAINABLE VANNAMEI CULTURE

April 29, 2023

Profitable and capable of long-term existence Because of the rising demand for
shrimp products of a higher quality and the necessity of developing more
environmentally friendly production techniques, the aquaculture industry is showing a
growing interest in vannamei farming. The Vannamei shrimp, also known as whiteleg
shrimp, is a species that is recognized for its rapid growth and great degree of
adaptability, allowing it to survive in a wide range of environmental circumstances.
Vannamei culture has the potential to be profitable and sustainable if it is managed and
produced using efficient ways. This would contribute to the overall economic expansion
of the aquaculture industry while simultaneously reducing the industry's negative effects
on the surrounding environment.
Last April 29, 2023, another webinar series was conducted by Tateh Feeds.
Tateh Feeds Corporation is a company that provides high-quality aquafeeds for different
types of aquaculture production, including vannamei shrimp culture. The purpose of

Tateh Feeds in vannamei production is to provide a balanced and nutritionally complete

diet for the shrimp, which supports their growth, development, and health. The
company's feeds are designed to meet the nutritional requirements of vannamei shrimp
at different stages of growth, from post-larvae to adult, and they are formulated using
high-quality ingredients and the latest nutritional research. By using Tateh Feeds in
vannamei production, farmers can improve their shrimp production and profitability while
maintaining the sustainability of their operations.

FISHpiration: Deaweeds for Health

February 10, 2023

The presentation, which was given under the title FISPIRATION: Seaweeds for
health as part of a college series on FishTalk in the College of Agriculture, was carried
out on February 10, 2023 at the USM-Main campus, College of Agriculture AVR by the
first group of fourth-year BS Fisheries students.
At the seminar, one of the researchers and achievers both in her time and in the
present, Dr. Rufa Lara Mendez, was the featured speaker. The importance of seaweed
and the benefits it provides was stressed by Dr. Mendez based on her past research. In
addition to that, she discusses the usage of seaweed as a resource, various strategies
for improving metabolic health, and peptide-based therapeutics.

Dr. Mendez's lecture is intellectually stimulating and requires a high level of

focus, preparation, time management, and intelligence. Although challenging, as a
student, I find it intriguing and believe that it provides valuable knowledge to the listener.
Dr. Mendez's dedication and determination are evident in the quality of the lecture, and
the results can be applied in the near future.
As a whole, the information presented during the conference FISPIRATION:
Seaweeds for health has profound implications for the medicinal application of
seaweeds. Dr. Mendez included her accomplishment and milestone, as well as the path
she took to get there.

KaGE: A genome, transcriptome and proteome explorer for Kappaphycus alvarezii

February 7, 2023

James G. Javier

The Algal Ecophysiology laboratory hosted a webinar titled "KaGE: A genome,

transcriptome and preotome explorer for Kappaphycus alvarezii" at the Marine Science
Institute, UP-Diliman. Dr. Scott Fahrenkrug was selected to deliver a lecture as part of a
series delivered by world-renowned lecturers.
Dr. Scott Fahrenkrug gave a presentation that covered topics such as the useful
genome and annotation of Kappaphycus alvarezii, coding and non-coding genes,
genome expansion, the interactive integrated system for finding and analyzing
Kappaphycus alvarezii genes of interest, as well as analyzing the genetic homogeneity
of clonal cultivars and Eucheumatoid genomes. These are some of the issues that Dr.
Scott discusses with his patients. Knowing that Kappaphycus sp. in the Philippines are
quite numerous and also that seaweeds have the highest production in our country
made this webinar really relevant to us.
This webinar was very helpful to me as a student, and it provided me with
background information that was linked to my studies. This information could provide
fantastic insight if I want to know more about the species of seaweed that I use when I
apply for jobs in the near future.

In summary, the genetics approaches presented in the webinar titled "KaGE: A

genome, transcriptome, and preotome explorer for Kappaphycus alvarezii" gave
annotations to valuable references as well as references to useful resources. Even
though the speaker is very slang due to the fact that he is from another country, he did a
very good job of delivering his issue in regards to the facts he wanted to offer.
