Hello Everyone.
We're back! I hope your summer is going well, but we know that some of you have
not had the best of times and our thoughts are with you. Last summer was too hot
and dry, this summer is too cold and wet, so next year, hopefully it will be the
'Goldilocks' summer and be just right.
I had planned a different front cover, but cannot find it anywhere, but this did entail
scrolling through hundreds of photos and getting out the family albums as well. Oh
my Goodness, at one time I had two good eyes and one chin, now alas………but it
did make us realise how much we have done in those years, so a pleasant
afternoon was spent. (still haven't found the original photo!)
The chosen front cover was taken at the national Hydrangea collection at Darley
Park, near Derby, it is in a walled garden and free to get in. Trust me, it is amazing
and the varieties and size of the blooms are such a joy.
Make it a special September, Gina

TO ALL PARISHIONERS
TO ALL PARISHIONERS
Dear Friends, Welcome to September!
'September days are here,
with summer's best of weather,
And autumn's best of cheer'.
A few lines from a poem by Helen Hunt Jackson, let's hope we have more sunshine
this month.

The start of the new school year and changes for many of our children, new classes,
new school, and new colleges.
In our churches we also have new changes, as Rev'd Judith has now retired, but our
ministry team continues. We are now in 'interregnum' and will be discerning
possibilities of a new minister. In the Norwich Diocese, we are working with the Rural
Dean, Rev'd Karlene Kerr from Gaywood and the Archdeacon and Bishop of Lynn.
We aim to continue with our normal rota of services, with support from other
colleagues.
On a personal level, I continue to be an Assistant Priest on a voluntary level and
have limited availability but have huge support from our ministry team and the
churchwardens.
Each parish church has one or two churchwardens, and they will now be the point of
contact for any enquiries. Contact details are available in the parish magazines.
There is still lots going on in our churches, in Gayton we have two events in
September, a concert called, A Trip Down Memory Lane with John Bennett and Gill
Smith and on 30th September we have an Antiques Road Trip, more detail in The
Voice or on the website.

As I write this letter my husband Richard is in hospital and very poorly. We all face
difficult times and for me and our families, this is 'one of those times'.
We pray for all life's changes and for anyone who is struggling.
We face new futures and new beginnings, and we pray especially for all our children
and young people as they set out on another step of their life's journeys.

A well-known passage from Matthew Ch 14, verses 22-33 tells us that Jesus walked
on water to save his disciples who were being tossed about in the boat on the Sea of
Galilee. They were afraid and needed help. Jesus calmed the water and reached out
to them. We all get tossed about at times and we just need to trust that Jesus is with
us forever, through changes in life, when things are not going so well and when we
are afraid. He is there to give us all a helping hand. Rev'd Sue Martin

Our heartfelt condolences to Rev Sue and her family

Gayton Football Club

After a hectic August in which the club have been busy redecorating
the changing rooms, tidying up and having a general spring clean.

September sees the club spring into league action. Big thank you as always to
Martin Neal in helping maintain the pitch and surrounding ground.

The club wishes John 'Boz' Barwell a speedy recovery after his recent illness, Boz is
a big part of the club and local community.

At the time of writing the First team have only played once, losing 4-1 at home to
Mutford and Wretham with the reserves kicking off 19th August. The reformed A
team kick off their North West Norfolk League games in September but at the time of
writing fixtures have yet to be released.

Lots of progress has been done behind the scenes, a big thank you to Mark Coe
who has kindly donated a new fixtures board at the edge of the ground and to Max
Rust and his company cutting the back of the far goal, we can't wait for the further
work that is planned for that part of the ground, which we hope to share with you
soon!

Evie Whitmore has agreed to become the club's photographer, Evie is studying
photography and the talented photographer is keen to grow her portfolio - her
Instagram is @whitterspictures.

And finally August 100 club winner is Mr Dominic McCallum, well done Dom and
remember to treat Pat and not just down at the social club!

We still have numbers on sale - from £5 per month for a chance to win a minimum of
£100 please contact the club.

We hope to see you all down at LKR this season!

“Wellfest” events to celebrate the difference volunteering activity makes across health and

Volunteering can take many forms and many people are surprised about the range of activities
local people undertake to help out. These events will feature interactive stands and displays
with opportunities to speak to current volunteers about what they do in their own words, meet
local PAT dogs or even take up the opportunity of having a therapeutic hand massage.
These events will be held on:
Tuesday 17 October at Duke's Head Hotel, 5-6 Tuesday Market Place, King's Lynn

Gayton Past Times
I'm so glad to see that Rocking Rocky is back! I reported back in December that
Rocky went missing and sadly, that was the last we would see of him.
But no! Lo and behold……..

He's been Repaired. Re Saddled. Re Shod. Re Painted and Re located.

All this work has been completed by the villagers, who don't wish to be named, so I
will call them Bill and Ben the Rocking horse men!

Sadly, it is a b/w photo, but he's back in his bright red/yellow and white livery, in his
meadow at Gayton Thorpe. Already he's been seen giving joy and putting smiles on
the faces of children, making all the time and great effort put in by Bill and Ben, to
restore this iconic playground item so worthwhile and stop Rocky being scrapped.
I hope that Rocky will keep rocking for many years to come. Thanks to all the time,
effort and care put in by Bill and Ben The Rocking Horse Men.

2½ cups Brown sugar; 4¼ cups of Malt vinegar(5% acetic acid)

Method
Chop Tomatoes, Onions and Raisins roughly and
mince the garlic.

Place all the ingredients into a stainless-steel pan and

bring to the boil.

Reduce heat to a vigorous simmer and leave, uncovered.

The Chutney is ready when it is reduced down and appears thick and brown.

Depending on appliance, this may be 1 to 3 hours. Check and stir regularly.

Once cooled a little bit, spoon into sterilised jars, either with glass tops or plastic
covered lids to prevent metal contact with the vinegar. Enjoy.

Compost Corner
September in the garden is a busy month generally, but I
have a feeling this year's Autumn will be upon us rather
early. Already, as I write this the middle of August, there
are signs of Autumn colour on the large Maple and the
Acers. We have suffered greatly with the many strong,
drying winds. Pots blown over and dried out, many
leaves ripped from trees and a huge branch of the large
Cotinus Grace detached, hopefully there is enough left
for it to survive. They have been amazing this year with
their huge fluffy blossoms and of course, we should get
some lovely Autumn colours.

Despite my many years gardening, I'm not particularly green fingered! My success
rate with 'cuttings' is, at best, mediocre. I am a bit more hopeful of Hydrangea
cuttings taking this year, and lavender. I have had some success with a couple of
other shrubs, but maybe you are a past master with the cuttings and splitting. I do
hope so because we will need all we can get to support the

Plant Fair – April 27th 2024. 10 – 1pm (tbc)

September is the month for planning next year's Spring bulbs/garden. Trying to get a
display from February to May. I have an order placed with a Dutch company, placed
6 weeks ago and was quite alarmed when they took payment straight away despite it
being another 6 weeks before the order is shipped! I won't be using them again, not
least because two dahlias purchased early this year also failed. Happy Gardening!

TIP

Don’t be tempted to dead head your

Hydrangeas.
The flower heads help protect the plants during
the winter. Once new growth starts in the
Spring, cut the dead heads off to a leaf joint.

You can bag one or two larger blooms to dry

off. Once dry, they can be sprayed, tiny ‘jewels’
added to the centre of the individual flowers or
just a ribbon added.

The Bridge for Heroes – A local Charity with a National Reach

“My command is this: love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one
than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.” John 15:12-13.
The Bridge for Heroes is a registered charity that provides mental health and
wellbeing support for the HM Armed Forces community, which includes serving
members, veterans and their families. By providing an initial point of contact at the
Charity's Bridge Centre located in South Clough Lane in King's Lynn, we are able to
offer holistic support to all who seek help, working closely with beneficiaries to
resolve their issues and, where necessary, signposting them to other services as
required.
Additionally, the Charity has a second facility, located at Nelson House on the North
Lynn Industrial estate, which offers a variety of activities including Arts & Crafts,
Photography, Woodwork, Crochet and Knitting, Cycling, Bicycle Maintenance to
name but a few. Both facilities offer free hot beverages, biscuits and cakes and the
Bridge Centre also offers hot food daily, together with a Sunday Roast (to those on
their own, isolated or lonely) and a Veterans Breakfast on a monthly basis. All of our
services, beverages and food are offered free of charge and there is even free
parking at Nelson House.
The Charity does not receive any statutory funding. We are funded by Grants that
we have to apply for from organisations such as the Armed Forces Covenant Fund
Trust, The Army Benevolent 'The Soldiers' Charity', the Royal Air Force Benevolent
Fund and the Norfolk Community Foundation to name but a few and we also rely on
the generosity of the public. Obtaining adequate funding is always a constant
struggle, but it is something that has to be achieved in order to continue delivering
our 'front-line' services.
The Charity was awarded 'The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service' in 2020, which
is a cited award with an MBE status for our important work in support of our
community, which is an indication of the quality of our work together with the strict
governance and framework in which we operate.
Our continual challenge, and one where we ask for your help, is communicating our
presence to those who are entitled to our support and, for many varied reasons,
cannot or will not seek it. The Bridge for Heroes offers tailored solutions to deliver
comradeship, new skills or interests and a feeling of value and accomplishment that
we all strive for.
Further information about The Bridge for Heroes can be found on
www.thebridgeforheroes.org or by searching for The Bridge for Heroes on
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Grimston Cricket Club
As the cricket season draws to a close, we are reflecting
on a golden summer for our club - even if the weather
hasn't felt like it at times! The adults team finished fourth
in the league, only two points from third - our final match
saw us win against undefeated Downham Stow, with some superb
fielding, batting, and bowling. Just as we hit our stride, the season is at a close and
we begin our planning for next year!

Our Under-9's team hosted a fabulous cricket tournament which saw clubs from
across West Norfolk visit, alongside a number of friendly matches and Castle Acre's
U9 tournament - whilst results didn't always go our way, the young cricketers played
with a smile on their face and we are filled with confidence for the future of our club.

The Under-13's took part in our first ever season of competitive youth cricket, taking
on the big clubs such as North Runcton, Bircham, Fakenham and Snettisham. The
young players did us proud, going toe-to-toe with their more experienced opposition
and not backing down in the face of some phenomenal cricket; huge thanks to the
teams in our league for accommodating us and making sure we were able to take
some learnings from each of the games. Once again, the resilience of our youth
players was in evidence every week, putting me in mind of the Rudyard Kipling poem
"if" - meeting with triumph and disaster, and treating those two imposters just the
same. They should be immensely proud of themselves, and we look forward to next
season!

We now begin to plan for next year, and are thrilled to announce that due to
continued growth we will be entering two adults teams in 2024 - Grimston will make
their return to Saturday cricket after an absence of 10 years, whilst retaining the
Sunday team with a focus on youth development and new/returning players. As
such, anyone who wishes to get involved would be very welcome, whether you're an
experienced cricketer or never picked up a bat before - you will find a warm welcome
at Grimston CC - please find us on social media to get in touch.

The final word must go to everyone who has helped to make this season our
greatest ever - from our sponsors, to all of the well-wishers, and the parents/carers
of our youth cricketers. We are hugely proud of the work which has gone into making
our beautiful ground the beating heart of our villages during the summer months, and
wait with great anticipation for 2024, which is sure to be our best yet. Sam Adkin

And Finally....
You are a bus driver.
8 people get on. 2 people get off. 2 more get on. Finally 3 more get on and
2 get off.
How old is the bus driver? (thank you Mary)
