Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each


SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you
need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of
the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you
will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

MUSIC

Lesson Music of Lowlands of Luzon


3 Secular Music

Target

In your previous lesson, you discovered the religious music of the Luzon
(lowlands). Now, you will discover the wonders of secular music. You have
experienced how to analyze and perform folk songs based on the appropriate
elements of music to determine their unique characteristics. Today you are going
to use the same knowledge and skills to analyze secular music. These elements
will describe how we Filipinos express our feelings and emotions through songs.
In this lesson, you are going to learn the secular music of Luzon
(lowlands).

1. Describes the musical characteristics of representative music selections from
the lowlands of Luzon after listening (MU7LU-Ia-1 ); and
2. Analyzes the musical elements of some Lowland vocal and instrumental
music selections; (MU7LU-Ia-2).

Music that is non-religious in nature is called secular music. Below are some of
the secular songs in the lowlands of Luzon.

1. Harana is a serenade traditionally sung


by a man to express hi love to a lady. It is
sung with emotion and usually
accompanied by a guitar, Such popular
Filipino harana songs are “Ang Tangi Kong
Pag-ibig”, “O Ilaw”, and “Dungawin Mo
Hirang”. Harana is mostly in quadruple
meter.

Music-
2. Kumintang originated from Balayan, Grade7/AlternativeDeliveryMode/Quarter1-
Batangas. This song is in triple meter with Module5/page5

themes of love and courtship. In 1926, when Pasig became the Venue of carnival
performances, Nicanor Abelardo was inspired to compose the “Mutya ng Pasig” in
kumintang tempo. In this sing, the mutya expresses her feelings under the light of
the moon. She is mourning the loss of her love, which symbolizes the country’s loss
of freedom.
3. Pandanggo is a dance form that can be found in the different islands of Luzon
such as Batanes, Ilocos, Tarlac, and parts of the Visayas. It is a variation of the
Spanish word fandango. A form of entertainment in the Tagalog region called

Pandangguhan is performed during social celebrations. Pandanggo is a


courtship dance but it can also refer to a type of song to entertain the farmers in
the rice field. The singers of this folk song are called pandanggeros and
pandanggeras

4. Polka originated form a Bohemian dance that became popular in Europe and
America in early 19th century. In the Philippines, it was performed in elegant evening
gatherings at the height of its popularity during the Spanish colonial period. The
tempo is in quick duple meter. There are some Philippine folk songs that are in
polka rhythm like Pamulinawen, Magtnim ay Di Biro and Leron Leron Sinta.

5. Balitaw is a dialogue or courttship song in triple meter, mostly 2 and 3 part forms
arranaged with counter melodies. Some of the examples are “Sa Libis ng Nayon”,

“Bakya Mo Neneng”, composed by Santiago Suarez and “Arimunding-munding”,
composed by Severino Reyes.

6. Kundiman (art song) came from the words “kung hindi man. Through its melody,
lyrics, and expressive singing, the kundiman conveys a selfless and spiritual attitude,
intense love, lnging, caring, devotion, and oneness not only with a romantic
partner, but also with a parent, child, a spiritual figure, or the motherland.

Some famous Filipino kundiman composers are Francisco Santiago,


NicanorAbelardo, Bonifacio Abdon, Francisco Buencamino, and Angel Peña.
Among the famous kundiman performers in the early 1990’s are Atang de la
Rama, Jovita Fuentes, Conching Rosal, And Ruben Tagalog.

Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement that uses energy. It includes
different exercises such as walking, running, stretching, or even dancing and playing
different sports and doing household chores. Physical activity can be a passive or
active activity. Passive activities are those bodily movements using limbs which are
not active activities like computer games, texting, watching television and those
activities that you did not give any effort. On the other hand, active activities are any
forms of movements or exercises that use energy.
Fitness is a condition in which an individual has enough energy to avoid
fatigue and enjoy life. Physical fitness is divided into five health-related fitness
components and six skill-related fitness components.
Health-related fitness component is the ability to stay physically fit and
healthy namely: body composition, muscular strength, muscular endurance,
flexibility and cardiovascular endurance.
Skill-related fitness component develops one’s performance in athletic or
sports events. The following are agility, balance, coordination, power, speed and
reaction time.
How can you make a difference in the lives of teenagers like you in this
generation? Here’s how! All you have to do is create a physical activity program that
best suits your interests.
In making a physical activity program we must consider the FITT principle.
This principle helps you to create and develop your workout plan or program that will
be more effective in achieving your fitness goals. FITT stands for Frequency (how
often you exercise), Intensity (how hard you exercise), Time (how long you exercise),
and Type (what kind of exercise you do). (Press 2018)

The four elements you need to create your workout plan are as follows;
F- Frequency: How often one exercises

Beginners should try to exercise 3 to 4 times a week while


experienced or healthy individuals should aim for 5 to 6 days a
week.

I- Intensity: How hard one exercises

This refers to how hard you are working. Intensity is one of the most
important ways to determine if you are exercising at a level that
benefits your heart.

T-TIME: How long one exercises

Time refers to how long you should exercise in your Target Heart
Rate.

The training guidelines describe how to safely apply the six (6) principles
of training (overload, specificity, progression, reversibility, adaptation and
individual differences) into an exercise training program.

• Overload
- This refers to which training must be raised to a higher
level than normal to create the extra demands to which your
body will adapt.

• Specificity
- This training must be specific to the o
sport activity, the type of fitness required and the r
particular muscle groups.

• Progression
- As your body adapts to training, you progress to a new level of
fitness. To then take this to the “new level’, a gradual increase in
intensity is needed to create an overload.

• Reversibility

- The effects of training are reversible. If effects is


reduced in intensity or even stopped, the benefit
can be lost quickly.

• Adaptation

- This refers to the body’s adaptability or eventually


turning new sport, activity, movement skill into second
nature.

• Individual Differences

- Each person has a different response to an


exercise or training program and each person
needs to exercise and train accordingly.

What is a Goal?
Goal is a future plan or desired results that a person or a group of people wants
to achieve in a specific timeline. It is similar to creating visions that enable a human
being to create tasks that lead to achieving anticipated results.

In creating goals, we need to consider the acronym SMART.


Specific. You should have clear and well-defined goal. Know what you really want
and what you want to achieve.
Measurable. You should have exact standards to measure your progress towards
achievement of your goal. Create specific standards to monitor the progress of your
work.
Achievable. Your goal should be realistic and not impossible to achieve. Make your
goal simple and easy to achieve to avoid delays and problems along the way.
Relevant. Your goal should be related to your life’s purpose. You should think and
consider your life’s values in making goals. Take consideration of your life’s practices
and make them as bases in creating a new life goal.
Time- bound. You should create a specific timeline of when to start working on your
set goals and when to end. The sense of urgency should be applied. It is not necessary
that you do your planned activities in a hurry but setting a specific time frame will
help you organize your tasks and your priorities.
When to set goals?
Goal Setting does not require a specific timeline on when and where you can set
your goals. Anytime of the day is perfect timing as long as you have already

identified and planned the things that you want to happen and achieve.
Why sets goals?
Numerous researches and studies have shown links between goals and
achievement in many fields. Setting goals enables you to have a sense of focus in
order to achieve the desired outcome you wish to have. This can also help you
organize your time and your resources so that you can make the most of your
abilities.
How to Plan Health-Related Fitness Activities?
The following actions are to be considered in planning for Health-Related Fitness
Activities:
1. Consider your fitness goals.
2. Create a balance routine.
3. Start easy to complex exercises.
4. Build activity into your daily routine.
5. Plan to include different Health-Related activities.
6. Try high- interval intensity training.
7. Allow time for recovery.
8. Note your progress.

Changes during Adolescence

Target

Adolescence is the stage to determine your identity. Identity means how a


person sees himself in relation to his or her world. It means a sense of self or
individuality in context of life and what is going to happen in the future. The
adolescent learns to negotiate new responsibilities, evolving relationships, and
aa new sense of self. The process of adolescent development can become quite
challenging and sometimes overwhelming.
As you grow up, being healthy is not only your concern, but also changes in
physical, mental, emotional, social, moral-spiritual and environmental
dimensions which may occur in adolescent development. Try to identify the
general changes in your adolescence period.
This module will provide you with information and activities that will help
you understand the practices to holistic health.

You may be experiencing significant changes in yourself because you are now in
another stage of life-adolescence. Adolescence starts with puberty. Puberty is the
time when you start to become sexually mature. It usually happens at the age of 10
to 11 for girls and 11 to 12 for boys. Some adolescents experience puberty ahead or
later than others. You undergo significant changes in health dimensions-physical,
intellectual, emotional, social and moral-spiritual.
A. Physical Changes
The physical transformations observed during adolescence are, in most cases,
the result of hormonal changes as the teenager’s body is transformed from child to
adult. This phase, called puberty, starts between the ages of 9 and 16 and usually
ends between the ages of 18 and 22.
These are some of the general changes that happen to adolescent boys and girls
during puberty.
• There is a rapid increase in height and weight. Boys experience this usually two
years later than girls.
• Changes happen in the circulatory and respiratory system. The heart and lungs
grow bigger and work better, although the increase is more in boys than in girls.
• In body composition, muscles develop rapidly, although boy’s muscle grow faster
than girls. Body fat increases, although the increase in girl’s body fat is more than
boys.
• The reproductive organ of both boys and girls grow and develop.
Primary sex characteristics are changes directly related to sexual reproduction.
The reproductive organs of both boys and girls grow and develop. The boys experience
their first release of seminal fluid or ejaculation from the penis. The girls experience
menarche or the onset of menstruation which signals the possibility of fertility among
women.
Secondary sex characteristics are changes not directly related to sexual
reproduction.

B. Mental or Intellectual Changes

Studies have shown that the brain makes significant changes as a child grows
through puberty into adulthood. As a child becomes teen, he or she is more able to
think abstractly, and more importantly, more able to empathize with others. Here
are some of the changes an adolescent might experience:

• Adolescents are egocentric. This means caring too much about yourself and not
about other people. They argue to convince, exhibit independent and critical
thought.
• Adolescents prefer active and cooperative learning activities over passive
learning experiences.
• Adolescents enjoy learning skills to apply to real life problems and situations.
• Adolescents have a tendency to become bored with routine activities: they need
to be challenged.
• Adolescents are capable of thinking critically helping them understand issues
and concerns about their development.
• Adolescents think less of themselves, allows them to think and reason out
better.
• Adolescents have the abilities to control and coordinate their thoughts with
their actions and deeds.
• Adolescent students focus attention on what they want to listen to. They can
also focus their attention on two or more things at the same time.

C. Emotional Changes

This is one of the important dimensions of health. This includes both positive and
negative reactions as follows:

• Erratic emotions and behaviors, mood swings are mostly experienced and felt.
• Emotions that are frightening and poorly understood, often triggered by
hormonal imbalance, may cause regression and more childish behavior patterns.
• As part of being moody and restless, they are introspective and often feel self-
conscious, alienated, and lack of self-esteem.
• Adolescents are easily offended and sensitive to criticism, vulnerable to one-
sided arguments and criticism
• Adolescents are being optimistic and hopeful, searching for adult identity and
acceptance.
• Adolescents exaggerate simple occurrences and believe that personal issues are
unique to themselves.
• Adolescents believe that nobody understands them, striving for a sense of
individual uniqueness and search for their identity.
• Adolescents are more emotional and makes them open to being hurt or in
danger.
• Boys are also sexually active: thus, they are prone to participate at risk behavior
due to the sudden increase in the manufacture of hormones.
• Girls become self-conscious because of the changes that are happening to
them, giving them a feeling of insecurity and discomfort.
• Early maturing boys are usually taller and stronger; they have good body image,
so they are more confident, secure and independent.

D. Social Changes

Social wellness refers to your ability to interact with people, respect yourself and
others, develop meaningful relationships and develop quality communication skills.

• The adolescent may act out unusual or drastic. At times, he/she may be aggressive,
daring, boisterous and argumentative.
• Adolescents are being rebellious towards parents, but still strongly depend on
parental values.
• Adolescents have negative interactions with peers, parents, and teachers may
compromise ideals and commitments.
• Adolescents distrusts relationship with others who show lack of sensitivity to
adolescent needs.
• Adolescents enjoy with friends, who share the same interests with them so they
stay longer with them after school.
• Adolescents are confused and frightened by new school settings that are large and
impersonal.
• Adolescents are loyal to peer values, sometimes cruel and insensitive to those
outside the peers.
• Adolescents idolizes peers and media role personalities as sources for standards of
behavior, dress and style.

E. Moral- Spiritual Changes

Adolescents on this stage, analyze themselves and find out who they are. They
explore moral and ethical issues.

• They explore and ask broad unanswerable questions about the meaning of life.
• They are reflective, introspective and analytical about their thoughts and feelings.
• They depend on influences of home and religious institutions for moral and ethical
choices and behaviors.
• They analyze strengths and weaknesses to understand and accept themselves
better.
• They learn house rules imposed by parents to promote order and harmony.
• They distinguish between rules that are negotiable and that are non- negotiable.
