Introduction
This week explains the basic concepts of Information system and its application in management studies.
The concept information technology is all about nature, man, information and their interrelationships
and/or inter-dependencies.
When you studied this week, you should be able to: ✓ Give the meaning of information system
✓ Know the information systems relevant to management ✓ Understand the distinctions between MIS
and DSS
Aim: The basic concepts of Information system and its application in management studies. The concept
information technology is all about nature, man, information and their interrelationships and/or inter-
dependencies
Activities:

Aim: The various methodologies used in management information system design and its relevance in
management studies.
Activities:
> Write a comparative note on top-down approach Strategic Information Model of MIS Design
methodology.
> Give an explanatory note on each of the eight (8) major areas of knowledge Requirements of MIS.
DESIGN
Introduction
Often times, many people use the terms "data" and "information" in such a way that
we would think they mean the same thing. In this unit, we will learn to use the terms correctly; and also
to appreciate the value of data and informationf.
✓ IPOS Cycle
Aim: Using the terms "data" and "information" correctly in such a way that we would know they did not
mean the same thing.
Activities:
Students should be guided to perform the following practical in the lab: > Give five other illustrations of
the IPOS Cycle as clear demonstration of your mastery of the knowledge in this regard.
Explore other factors that determine the method of data processing in organizations.

DESIGN
The whole issue about organization integration is the tool for data processing design and consequently
its deployment and use, is within the context of a clear Information System strategy. For this reason the
actual analysis and design of Organization's Information System are also key part of this study; as a
strategy, we looked for a modular design that could easily inform the different levels of interoperability
through progressive stages of integration and development; one that allowed flexibility, reordering
priorities without losing control of the rest of the components.
Having understood the general views of Data Processing Stages/Cycle, it is time to take a look at the
general view of Data Processing System design, called Data Processing Model. This model consists of
four basic but inter-related elements as presented below
Data Processing Design is the process that involves developing a new Data Processing system to achieve
the goals and objectives of the organization and to overcome some of the shortcomings of the existing
Data processing system.
✓Cost-benefits analysis in data processing system designs ✓ Tasks system design phase
Objectives:
Compare and contrast 'Cost Benefit Analysis' and 'Cost Effectiveness Analysis'.
Describe the following tools normally used by Data Processing System designers:
a. Flow Charts
b. Decision Tables
EXCEL
Introduction
This week introduces students to the basis of applying computer in accounting operations. It particularly
studied budget preparation using Ms Excel.
Give Column Headings (in the Budget table) different text Orientations
Aim: This section introduces students to the basis of applying computer in accounting operations. It
particularly studied budget preparation using Ms Excel.
Objectives:
a.
b.
C.
Prepare invoice with Spreadsheet and perform calculations using formulas and functions.
Use Electronic spreadsheet to prepare Class results and carry out calculations using formulas and
functions.
Set up a Database record in Ms Excel then Filter the records and as well sort the records.
d.
Aim: Creating a spreadsheet to design a payroll and generate Management Information and other
reports for decision making.
Objectives:
Use MS Excel to generate a payroll report that will track employees' information. The package is
expected to track the following categories of input data: employee Bio data, Qualification, Programme
of Study, Next of Kin data, basic salary and allowances and deductions if any.
Activities:
> Develop MS Excel spreadsheet to capture information for twenty (20) using the given details that is,
use the various data categories given above and design spreadsheet for the structure. You might use
some criteria for generating useful report.
> Carry out some useful calculations across rows and columns of your spreadsheet.
Aim: Creating table using MS Access Database Management System to design MIS with use of form.
Objectives: Use MS Access to generate a payroll report that will track employees' information. The
package is expected to track the following categories of input data: employee Bio data, Qualification,
Programme of Study, Next of Kin data, basic salary and allowances and deductions if any.
Activities:
> Develop MS Access in the datasheet view of MS Access to capture information for twenty (20) using
the given details that is, use the various data categories given above and design spreadsheet for the
structure definition. You might use some criteria for generating useful report.
> Carry out some useful calculations across rows and columns of your records.
> Design two forms for the tables created in activity 7 to handle data input and update.
Objectives: Use MS Access to design students' Management Information System (MIS). The package is
expected to track the following categories of input data: student' Bio data. Local Government Area,
Programme of Study, Next of Kin data, State and any other
information.
Activities:
> Develop MS Access in the datasheet view of MS Access to capture information for twenty (20) using

WEEK FIFTEEN
Introduction
Recall that Critical path scheduling is a scheduling technique used to determine the order and duration
of the sequence of project activities that directly affect the completion date of a project.
> well defined activities that have a clear beginning and end point;
Objectives: This practical is to give you hands-on experience with some of the tools used to manage
systems development projects. Activities: Develop PERT and GANTT charts and identify the critical path
for the project outlined in the assignment.
