Into the Hero…
After getting to know the two major characters, Beowulf and Grendel, get to know the movie better by answering the
questions that follow.

1. What was the problem that arose in the story? (5 points)


The main problem in the story of Beowulf is how weak human nations are brought to ruin by evil, monstrous
outsiders. Civilization is unstable and vulnerable to collapse at any time. When Beowulf is no longer able to defend
the Geats from invasion at the poem's conclusion, the issue gets worse.

2. What does Heorot hall symbolize and why? (5 points)


Heorot hall symbolize as human civilization and culture, as well as the might and power of the Spear-Danes
under Hrothgar. It represents a warm, happy and joyous place. He built it because he wants his people to have a great
meeting hall where they can gather together and celebrate. This meeting hall will help tie his people together.

3. Describe King Hrothgar. Does he fit the expectations of an Anglo-Saxon king? (5 points)
King Hrothgar is shown as both a strong and wise ruler, and as a flawed person with a troubled background.
He is shown to be a great warrior and generous leader, which fits as an ideal king for Anglo- Saxon. However, his
flaws and the revelation of his past actions somewhat twist the image of an ideal king in Anglo-Saxon culture.

4. Why did Grendel attack King Hrothgar’s people? (5 points)


Grendel attacks because he is jealous and not welcome in Herot. As a monster, he is forever barred from
human society. He cannot partake in their feasts, delight in their music or find a place in their community.

5. Why did Beowulf seem to have an all-powerful stature in the story? (5 points)
Beowulf seem to have an all-powerful stature in the story because of his brave history and his heroic status.
Beowulf extra-ordinary strength undefeated battle record and his noble stature fulfill the first requirements of a tragic
hero.

6. Who among our modern-day heroes would you liken Beowulf to? Why? (5 points)
I would liken Beowulf to Firefighters, Police Officers, and Military Personnel because they serve and provide
safety and needs for everyone in our community. Not to mention the danger they run whenever they come upon
insurgents and criminals just like Beowulf, he’s brave and noble.

7. How do people overcome life struggles that require them to choose sides between the good and the bad? (5 points)
People should train their mind to think positively. When they get good at acknowledging thoughts and letting
them pass, they can stop negative thoughts in their tracks. Learning how to deal with challenges takes time,
persistence, and a positive attitude. No matter your life situation, the hard times will happen. But, with the right
mindset and practice, you will be able to overcome them every time and grow in the process!
