A hyperbola has an equation in the form:
k
=y =or xy k
x
where k is a constant, sometimes called the constant of variation.
A hyperbola:
• is a discontinuous graph
(An asymptote is a line that a curve approaches, but never touches, as it heads towards infinity.)
• The higher the value of k, the further the hyperbola is from the x- and y-axes.
k k
The graph of y= + c shifts y = up or down. (vertical transformation)
x x
k k
The graph of y = shifts y = left or right. (horizontal transformation)
