What is It

Now, let us study the concepts related to your activity.

To start, a quick review of basic statistical concepts was mentioned in the book
of Cristobal and Cristobal (2017). Let’s go!

Statistical Treatment is the culmination of the long process of formulating a

hypothesis, constructing the instrument and collecting data. It is used to properly
test the hypothesis, answer the research questions, and present results of the study
in a clear and understandable manner. In qualitative research, data are validated by
document analysis, ethnomethodology and observation studies. However, in a
quantitative research, which deals more on numerical data, as in most surveys and
experiments, it is logical to use the statistical treatment.

Statistics is the body of knowledge and techniques used in collecting,

organizing, presenting, analyzing and interpreting data. It is a prerequisite in any
research that the researcher has sufficient knowledge of various statistical

6
techniques. It allows the use of descriptive language, which is more efficient and
exact in communication. It also simplifies vague conclusions arriving in definite ones.
All courses of study require a formal program work because statistics is very useful
and important in almost every field of endeavor as follows (Angeles et al., 2005):

Education It is used to measure and described test results that can

improve the teaching and learning process.
Science It is used as a tool in research and experimentation as well as
interpreting of the collected data
Business & It is used in production statistics, volume of sales, inventory
Economics control, measure of production, prices, volume of trade, etc.
Engineering It is used to test the reliability to improve the control of quality
of houses, buildings and other construction works
Government It helps in maintaining efficient system of civil registration

Two Branches of Statistics

1. Descriptive Statistics. It involves tabulating, depicting and describing the

collected data. The data are summarized to reveal overall data
patterns and make them manageable

2. Inferential Statistics. It involves making generalizations about the population

through a sample drawn from it. It also includes hypothesis testing
and sampling. Similarly, it is concerned with a higher degree of
critic judgment and advanced mathematical modes such as
parametric (interval and ratio scale) and non-parametric (nominal
and ordinal) statistical tools.

According to Sirug (2011), all collected data in the broadest sense are measured
in some form. Hence, the discrete quantitative data can be thought of as arising by
a process of “measurement of counting”. There are four widely recognized levels of
measurent – the nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio.
1. Nominal Level of Measurement. It is mutually exclusive (property that
include in only one category) and exhaustive (property each individual must
appear in a category) which uses to differentiate classes or categories for
purely classification and identification purposes. Nominal data are considered
at the simplest level and discrete variables.

Qualitative Variable Categories

Sex Male, Female
Marital Status Single, Married, Widowed
Favorite Hair Colors Black, Gray, Blonde, Others

2. Ordinal Level of Measurement. It is somewhat stronger form of

measurement because an observed value classified into one category is said
to possess more of a property being scaled than does an observed value
classified into another variable. It is used for ranking purposes mostly in
Likert scaling. Moreover, ordinal scaling is still a weak form of
measurement, because no meaningful numerical statements can be

7
made about the differences between the categories. Ordinal Data are
discrete variables

Qualitative Variable Categories

Learner’s Progress O, VS, S, FS, Did not meet expectations
Movie Classification G, PG, PG-13, R-18, X
Observed Values Always, Sometimes, Rarely, Not Observed

3. Interval Level of Measurement. It is used to classify order and differentiate

between classes or categories in terms of degrees of differences. This attribute
of variables where the distance from one number to the other has a meaning.
Interval data are either discrete or continuous variables.

Qualitative Variable
Temperature (in degree Celsius or Fahrenheit)
Calendar Time (Gregorian, Hebrew, or Islamic)

4. Ratio Level of Measurement. It differs from the interval measurement

only in one aspect; it has a true zero point (complete absence of the
attitude being measured). Ratio data are either discrete or continuous
variables.

Qualitative Variable
Weight (in pounds or kilograms)
Age (in years or days)
Salary ( in Philippine Peso)

BIVARIATE ANALYSIS
Bivariate Analysis is concerned with the analysis of two variables at a time. It aims
to determine whether two variables are related. It means looking for evidence that a
change in one variable is accompanied by a change in another variable. A variety of
techniques is available for examining this relationship. However, the choice and use
of such a technique depends on the nature of the two variables being analysed.
(Bryman, 2008, p.325)

It has been shown on the summary table about the level of

measurement tells about how statistical tools are being used in univariate and
bivariate data. That’s why, it is very important for you to know how to differentiate
the data collected so you can choose the appropriate common statistical tools to be
used. Let’s explore about the commonly used statistical tools!

I. Descriptive Statistics

Statistical Tools Description

It is the proportion expressed in percentage

3. Percentage (proportion x 100).
It indicates where the center of the distribution
tends to be located. It refers to the typical or
average score in a distribution
A. Mode. It refers to the most frequently occurring
score in a distribution.
B. Median. It is the middlemost value in a
4. Measure of Central distribution below or above which is
Tendencies exactly 50% of cases that are found.
C. Mean. It is the exact mathematical center of a
distribution. It is equal to the sum of all
scores divided by the number cases.

It refers to the extent and manner in which the

scores in a distribution differ from each other.
5. Variability or
dispersion A. Range. It is the difference between the highest
value and the lowest value in the given
distribution.

9
B. Average deviation. It is the measure of
variation that takes consideration the
deviations of the individual scores from
the mean.
C. Variance. It is the square of the standard
deviation.
D. Standard deviation. It is the square root of the
quotient of the total squared deviation
of the mean and the total number of
cases.
II. Inferential Statistics

1. Parametric tests. These tests require a normal distribution. The level of

measurements must either be interval in ratio.

Statistical Tools Description

This test used to compare two means: the
means of two independent samples or two
independent groups or the means of two
correlated samples before and after treatment.
6. T-test
It can be used for samples composed of at least
30 elements and the population standard
deviation is unknown and be replaced by
sample standard deviation
It is used to compare two means: the sample
mean and the perceived population mean. It can
7. Z-test be used when the population standard deviation
is known or maybe the sample has 30 or more
elements.
It is used when comparing the means of more
than two independent groups. One-way ANOVA
8. F-test/Analysis of
is used when there is one variable involved and
Variance two-way ANOVA is used when there are two
variables involved.
It is a measure of the linear strength of the
association between two variables. The value of
the correlation coefficient varies between +1 and
9. Pearson Product-
-1. When the value of the correlation coefficient
Moment Coefficient of lies around ±1, then it is said to be a perfect

This test of difference between the observed and
the expected frequencies. The chi-square test has
three functions:
a. Test of Goodness of Fit. It is a test of difference
between the observed and expected
frequencies
b. Test of Homogeneity. It is concerned with two
or more samples with only one criterion
variable. This test is used to determine
12. Chi-square test if two or more populations are
homogenous.
c. Test of Independence. The sample used on this
test consists of members randomly
drawn from the same population. This
test is used to look into which measures
are taken or if two criterion variables
are either independent or associated
with one in a given population
This is the non-parametric version of the Pearson
