SCENARIO #1
You and your teammates are heading to Japan for international training to prepare
for ASEAN Games but due to heavy rain the airplane suddenly crashed and landed
on uninhabited island. Fortunately, nobody dies but the airplane will explode
within 10 minutes and your team is working against the clock to pull yourselves
out. Before living the airplane your team could get at least three items in it in order
to survive before it explodes. What items would it be? Decide which items the team
will bring and write your reason on the space provided next to your chosen items.

UNDERSTANDING STRATEGIC ANALYSIS AND INTUITIVE THINKING

Thinking is a mental process which helps us to organize thought, analyze

situations, learn new ideas, reflect on our experiences and create things.

Strategic thinking is a
metal or thinking process
applied by individual in
the context of achieving a
goal or set of goals in a
game or other endeavor.
Strategic thinking is a
process in which
significant issues and
decisions are considered
in a special way. In
addition, it is applicable
and useful in a wide range
of situations, including
developing strategies for a
company, making a business or personal decision, or just understanding a
situation. Also, specified as being conceptual, systems-oriented, directional, linking
the future with the past and opportunistic. A strategic thinker is a big picture
person who sets the direction.

Strategic thinking incorporates SWOT analysis

which stands for strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and threats as it is the most
straightforward approach in analyzing strategy of
an organization. Also, it focuses on internal and
external forces in the business environment of a
company or organization. SWOT analysis is
essential in any organization as it shows how
feasible goals could be achieved. Strengths present
areas you do well or advantages of your
organization, Weaknesses are areas to be
improved, Opportunities are external factors that
may contribute to your organization and can build

10
up your strengths, and Threats are potential problems/risks caused by external
factors that your organization may face.

On the other hand, Intuitive thinking is a quick and ready insight. Also, a feeling
(a sense) that doesn't use rational processes such as facts and data but sometimes
it referred to as gut feeling, sixth sense inner sense, inner voice, spiritual guide etc.
Not only but also intuitive thinking is just thoughts that arise from the back of
your mind because the situation you
are dealing with has something in
common with your past experience.
Otherwise, no one can teach you this
as it must be earned with real-world
experience. According to Science,
intuitive thinking happens in a region
of our brain close to the pineal gland.
Moreover, intuitions are knowledge
derived from accumulated experience.
For example, experience from reading a lot of speeches allows me to intuitively
recognize the main message of the speech apart from the jumbles of rhetoric and
details. It comes from the Latin word “intuir,” which means knowledge from within.

FOUR KINDS OF INTUITIVE THINKING

EMOTIONAL INTUITIVE THINKING has something to do with your ability to
immediately pick up on other people’s personality traits or emotional states. You
can see who they are, or how they are, without them having to say anything.
MENTAL INTUITIVE THINKING is about finding an immediate answer to a
problem, without analyzing it. It is very common in people with jobs that require
quick decisions, like firefighters or bomb technicians.
PSYCHIC INTUITIVE THINKING means having the ability to choose the best path
to overcome a personal difficulty, without putting much mental effort into it. It also
means being able to pick up on social and work-related dynamics.
SPIRITUAL INTUITIVE THINKING has something to do with states of
“enlightenment” or “revelations”. They are more of an experience than a fact.
Buddhists talk about this kind of intuition more than anyone else which has given
it a mystical quality.

11
DIFFERENTIATING STRATEGIC AND INTUITIVE THINKING
STRATEGIC INTUITIVE

Slow Quick

Deliberate Reactive

Awareness of Thinking Unconscious

Strategic and Intuitive thinking differ from one another base on how it reacts in any
given situation. Strategic thinking sticks on its characteristics which are slow to
react, deliberates decision and fully aware in terms of thinking. On the other hand,
Intuitive thinking shows quick response, reactive in any situation and unconscious
on how their mind responds.

In summary, Strategic thinking focuses on intentional and rational thought which

eyes critical factors and variables that will influence the long-term success of a
business, an organization or individual. Conversely, Intuitive thinking is done
automatically without enough time to analyse. Also, your brain develops
unconscious decision in handling over time as it translates our experiences into
judgments, responses and actions.
