TEST 1:
Problem: Suppose you live in a dormitory room or a rented room with
some other students. One of your roommates is untidy and often leaves
his/her corner in a mess. What should you do to help him/her improve?
I have a few suggestions for him/her to improve it. Firstly, I will talk to
them- This is the first step when your roommate gets super messy. If
you put it off and don’t tell them how you feel, how can you expect
them to change? Your anger and frustration will continue to build and
you may just blow up at them over something small and they will have
no idea what caused it. Sometimes one simple conversation can fix
everything. Secondly, I will give them some helpful hints- If this isn’t
done the right way it can come off a bit passive aggressive. For some it’s
hard to gain up the courage to talk to someone about an issue so it’s
easier to just work around it. Cleaning the room in front of your
roommate may make them feel bad for leaving the mess in the first
place and they could even join in. Helpful other little hints like leaving
toilet bowl cleaner in the toilet or cleaning supplies on their desk on
“accident” may help them get the picture too! I hope my suggestions
would be useful for them.
Topic: Unlike high schools, universities encourage students to work
more by themselves rather than relying too much on teachers' lectures.
Do you think this is a good idea? Give reasons for your opinion.
I think that's a good idea. Firstly, in high school, most of you learn by
heart and completely don’t understand the meaning of the subjects
that you study. So when you encounter some advanced questions,
almost you can't answer them. And when you go to the university, you
have to understand its nature to be able to do well in the exam and to
do that, you have to study and learn more by yourself because a class
has a lot of students. Teachers can’t manage all. So you can only learn
to understand it by yourself. Secondly, and when you study like that, it
also helps your brain a lot. You make your brain work more and also
help you form a good habit. If you are active in learning, you can learn
by yourself, you will turn the knowledge of others into your own. That
helps you to become smarter, more sensitive and much better thinking
than relying on the teacher. So I think it's a good idea to not rely too
much on teacher’s lecture.
TEST 2:
Problem: Many students live in the dormitory or a rented room.
Without their family, what should they do to take care of themselves
concerning daily routines, eating habits, school work, health, etc.?
There are several things they could do. Firstly, they must learn to take
care of themselves. They should learn about all the daily chores that
their parents used to do for them. Practice doing the simplest things,
the smallest things like cleaning, cooking,... Secondly, they should be
more active in life. They have to learn how to set up a plan for
themselves like what to do today, what to do first, what to learn
today,.... and they should maintain this to it can become a good habit
for them. It will help them feel easier in a lot of things if there is a
specific plan. I hope my suggestions would be useful for them.
Topic: Girls are usually better at a foreign language, for example English,
than boys. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons to support your
opinion.
I completely disagree with this opinion. Firstly, being good at a foreign
language is completely independent of your gender. Around me, there
are many boys who are still better at English than many other girls. Or
there is a specific example such as English teachers still have male
teachers and the number of male and female teachers is equal.
Secondly, there is no law or definition say that girls are often better at
foreign languages than boys. Girls can study and learn more about
different languages in the world, but it is not certain that girls are better
at foreign languages than boys. In fact, being good at a foreign language
completely depends on whether you study hard or not, are interested in
it or not and have a purpose to use it, but being good at a foreign
language does not depend on your gender. So in my opinion this is a
completely wrong opinion.
TEST 3:
Problem: Some of your friends do not have a computer to work on
because they are too poor to afford one. What should they do to have
their own computers?
I have a few suggestions for this problem. Firstly, they can buy a
secondhand laptop for a lot less than a new laptop. Currently on the
market there are many laptops that people only use 3-4 months then
sell it to buy a newer one. Those laptops will be resold at a cheaper
price and they can buy it to serve their learning needs. Secondly, if they
don't like the above solution, they can buy a new laptop by paying
monthly installments. There are many famous laptop brands that have
assisted those who can’t afford to buy that way. They will pay small
monthly payments and specify how many months it will be paid. They
can both work to earn money to pay and have a laptop to study. I hope
my advice would be useful for them.
Topic: Reading a book is not a popular leisure activity among students.
They prefer easy activities such as listening to music or using Facebook.
Do you think it is a good idea to encourage students to read more in
their freetime? Give reasons for your opinion.
Reading is not so popular with students. And I think we should
encourage students to read more books. There are many benefits that
come from reading books. Firstly, you can improve your vocabulary,
gain more knowledge by reading books regularly. You can see successful
and famous people in the world who spend all their free time reading
books instead of using their phones. Reading is the reason for their
success. Secondly, reading can help you relieve stress from life or study.
It will help you understand more about places you have never been, it
will help you to know secrets that no one has told you or reading books
will also help you to understand more about yourself. You may find that
reading is boring, tasteless and meaningless, but why do successful
people tell us that reading is so important? Reading is a very long
process and you have to maintain it so that it can become your daily
habit. And one day not far you will feel the benefits of reading for you.
So I feel the opinion is completely correct.
TEST 4:
Problem: Suppose you are sharing a room with some other students.
One of the roommates is very noisy and even plays loud music or
watches TV very late at night, preventing the others from concentrating
on their study or sleeping. What should you do to help him/her
improve?
I have a few suggestions for this problems. Firstly, I will ask directly -
This is the first step when your roommate is very noisy. When it gets
too loud for you in the room, ask for exactly what you want. Assume
that your roommate has no idea he is bothering you. Say "hey, could
you put on headphones? I'm reading," or "I'm going to sleep now—can
you take your phone call outside?". Secondly, If your roommate does
not comply, just setting rules. you can in the year, set "house rules"
with your roommate. Your house rules should determine when it is
okay to be noisy, when it isn't, and what constitutes noisy.I hope my
advice would be useful.
Topic: Many university campuses in inner Ho Chi Minh City are not large
enough for students' academic as well as physical activities. This can
have negative impacts on their education. Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your opinion.
I agree with this opinion. It's possible that everyone overlooks being
active and physical education because it's not a central element of
college education. But I always think that physical activity is also very
important because if you don't have a good health you won't be able to
study well. There are many cases where you do not have good health
and study a lot, leading to exhaustion and fainting. Therefore, physical
activity can’t be taken lightly. And of course universities must also have
enough space to help you have better physical activities. If the
university is not large enough to be physically active, this can have a
negative impact on their studies. Because that leaves the enrolled
students with no place to be physically active, which will lead to a lot of
problems in their health condition. And this continues for many years,
no one will want their children to study in such a lack of material
conditions. So the opinion is completely correct and I completely agree.
TEST 5:
Problem: You and some classmates want to form a sport group to play
badminton (or football, volleyball, table tennis, etc.) together. Help
make a plan (suggest what equipment you need, where you can play,
when during the week you meet, etc.)
I have a few suggestions for this problems. Firstly, I will make a list of
things needed to play badminton such as badminton rackets,
shuttlecocks,... and then show them to you so that you can prepare all
the supplies necessary when playing badminton. Secondly, I will find
places where I can play badminton comfortably like the city's
gymnasium or amusement parks that have badminton court rentals
cheap or we can rent badminton courts from the school this will make
commuting easier. And then we will agree on a day and time each week
so that you can go to full practice. I hope my advice would be useful.
I think it's not a bad idea to let students judge their teachers. Because in
a classroom, students will be the ones who have the closest contact
with the teacher and can rely on that to evaluate their teachers in the
most objective way. And learning is the student's task, so when the
teacher conveys the teaching content that the students do not
understand, the students can also give their opinion. In my opinion, I
want to know if it is a good teacher or not based on the opinion of the
students because it is the students who know the teacher well. The fact
that students can evaluate teachers is also a good way for teachers to
understand how they should change for the better. So I feel it's a good
idea for students to be able to evaluate their teachers. It can help many
teachers understand what their students want and it is also a way for
teachers to improve themselves.
TEST 9:
Problem: Your class plans to raise some money to help flood victims in
Central Vietnam. Suggest different steps to do this.
I have a few suggestions for this problems. Firstly, I will inform you
about this plan 1 month in advance so you can save your money. And I
will notify you about the payment deadline so that you can pay it on
time. Secondly, not all of you can have extra money to support, so you
can also support with clothes, food,... There are clothes you don't wear
anymore that you can take to support, there are items If you still have
leftover food at home, you can also bring it to support. I hope my advice
would be helpful.
Topic: In a big city, there are better schools, teachers, programmes, etc.
than in a town or province. Therefore, it is said that young people who
come from cities study better than those coming from provinces and as
a result will have better careers later in life. Do you agree? Give reasons
for your opinion.
I don't think this is a correct opinion. Firstly, I have many friends who do
not live in the city but they do not lack the conditions to study.
Nowadays, rural areas are also much more modern. There are also
many good schools for students, so it won't be too difficult to see them
doing well. Secondly, the majority of children who live in rural areas are
the majority of children who are admitted to prestigious universities.
For example, my school in the countryside has a graduation rate of
100% and passes into prestigious universities such as the University of
Medicine and Pharmacy, the University of Economics, and the
University of Foreign Trade. So having a good job opportunity or a good
life after graduation does not depend on where the child was born, but
on how hard the child tried.
TEST 10:
Problem: You are living in a dorm /rented room in the city. The parents
of a roommate are coming to see him/her for the weekend. Suggest a
few things he/she should prepare to welcome his/her parents.
I have a few suggestions for this problems. Firstly, we will keep the
room clean and tidy. Adults don't like to see a room that is too
cluttered. And we can both clean up and decorate with unique
accessories to welcome your parents. Secondly, you can make some
delicious dishes to treat your parents. That will make your parents
happier and also more secure about you. If not, you can take your
parents to eat at a few delicious and cheap restaurants that you often
eat so that your parents can know how independent you are. I hope my
advice would be useful.
Topic: We admire famous people, for example sport, film or singing
stars because of their talents and we do not care how they behave. Do
you agree we should not be concerned about a star's bad or good
behaviour? Give reasons for your opinion.
I disagree with that opinion. Firstly, famous people such as idols,
supermodels, actors, ... can all be a role model in the eyes of many
young people today. They will serve as an example that many young
people want to learn and follow to become a celebrity like them. So if
they have a very bad personal life and many young people will not
distinguish right from wrong but learn from those things, the
consequences will be worse and worse. Secondly, there are many young
people who are blindly in love with idols or their idols. It would be a lot
worse if they followed those and thought it was the right thing to do. So
I think that being a famous person who can influence people, you have
to be careful with every word and every action you take. A person with
a bad personality will not be able to be an example, will not be a perfect
role model for everyone to follow. So I totally disagree with the opinion
that we should not be concerned about a star’s bad or good behaviour.
TEST 11:
Problem: Suppose that in your neighbourhood there are very poor
children who have to work hard with their parents during the day. You
and your friends plan to open a few evening classes to help them learn
something. Suggest a few steps to carry out this plan, taking into
account the location, textbooks, voluntary teachers, teaching aid, etc.
I have a few suggestions for this problems. Firstly, we will be looking for
a suitable location to teach. Regarding school supplies or textbooks, we
can ask for old books of those you have already studied or those you
are interested in giving. We will also announce this activity to many
other young people who are passionate about teaching to help us
further. Secondly, we will ask for as much funding as possible for this
activity. Currently, there are many sponsors who are interested in
teaching children who cannot go to school. We will use that funding to
be able to purchase more teaching supplies. And this will also help the
class be known to more disadvantaged families and send their children
to class. I hope my advice would be helpful.
Topic: A lesson is successful not thanks to teaching alone but also
because of student's active participation. Do you agree? Give reasons
for your opinion.
I think this is a completely correct opinion. Firstly, a classroom always
consists of two main components, the teacher and the student. If a
teacher doesn't give his best and a student doesn't like to contribute to
the lesson, it will cause a lot of trouble for both parties. But it’s not
mean that you just sit in class and let the teacher lecture or work alone,
it will make the teacher feel sad and unable to teach you more
interesting and new knowledge. Secondly, a classroom where only the
teacher teaches and the students listen attentively without giving any
opinions to a class where both the teacher and the students actively
discuss the lesson, actively discuss the content. lesson, of course the
second class will make others want to learn more and enjoy it a lot
more. Therefore, having students exchange and contribute ideas about
the lesson will have many benefits for that lesson and the teacher will
also become much happier and more comfortable. So I totally agree
with the opinion that a lesson is successful not thanks to teaching alone
but also because of student's active participation.
TEST 12:
Problem: A relative of yours from the province is coming to the city in a
few days to have a health check-up. Help plan his/her stay and travel
(e.g. where to stay, how to travel, where to book and have a check-up,
how to book return coach)
I have a few suggestions for this problems. Firstly, I will clean an empty
room at my house so that they can be more comfortable in it. I will
book a car for them and order a medical number for them. I will notify
them of the date and time of the bus ride and I will pick them up to my
home. Secondly, I will let them up 1-2 days early so that I can lead them
to many places in the city. I will take them to visit famous places, take
them to eat and drink delicious dishes that are not available in the
countryside, and buy them some necessary things before they return to
their hometown and when they're done, I'll book a car for them to go
home. I hope my advice would be helpful.
Topic: Some people think that it is a good idea to get students to
evaluate teaching. Others, however, do not agree that students should
assess their teachers. What do you think? Give reasons for your opinion.
I think it's a pretty good idea to let students asses their teachers. Firstly,
students are the ones who directly listen to the teacher's teachings.
They will find out what they like or dislike about their teachers. So let
them evaluate their teachers in the most fair way, then the teacher will
know what points to promote and what mistakes to fix. Secondly,
having students be able to asses their teachers makes teaching fairer,
much better. There are many teachers who will make mistakes, but no
student dares to speak out about the problem, so that the teacher does
not realize the mistake, they will continue to make mistakes. Teacher
evaluation is also a common form on famous universities, which also
helps schools to evaluate teachers more easily. So I think it’s a good
idea.
TEST 13:
Problem: A friend of yours wants to do a part-time job to earn extra
money for his/her expenses. Advise her where to look, what kind of job
to do, how much time to work, how to balance between study and work
etc.
I have a few suggestions for this problems. Firstly, I will introduce her to
prestigious workplaces where a lot of students are also working such as
convenience store chains, cinemas, clothing stores or eateries,... Or If
she wants a permanent place to work, I can recommend her to
reputable job placement websites that many people have used and
succeeded. She can apply for a job by applying directly or indirectly by
emailing the employer. Secondly, She is still in school so I hope she can
balance between study and work. She should only work in her free time
such as after school or on her day off. She can choose her own hours or
can work part-time which will help her balance between studies and
work. I hope my advice would be helpful.
Topic: The time allotted to English lessons is not enough for students to
master a knowledge of English that helps them to work well in the
future. As a result, they should by themselves find ways and time and
make extra efforts to improve their English outside the classroom. Do
you agree? Give reasons for your opinion.
I disagree with this opinion. Because the time allotted to English lesson
doesn’t affect too much that you have to find ways and time to make
more efforts to improve English outside of the classroom. I think the
time allotted to English lesson is just enough, not too little, because if
you take more time, but you still don't want to study, it will make
English more boring for you. Whether learning English becomes good or
not depends a lot on the students want to learn or not. You can find a
place to study outside to improve your current level of English and that
is for you to decide, so the amount of time spent studying English does
not affect your learning too much. Learning English is not simply
learning in class with teachers, but also depends on everyone's practice
and self-study. So I think the time allotted to English lesson is enough
for students to master the knowledge of English that helps them to
work well in the future.
TEST 14:
Problem: Suppose you are the leader of a study group in your class.
Your group is asked to carry out research on a given topic and make a
presentation of the results of your research in front of the class in a
week. As the head of the group, decide on the different things different
members of your group have to do to complete the assignment.
I have a few suggestions for this problems. Firstly, as a group leader, I
will make an outline of the main content that the presentation should
have, then divide it into small parts, suggestions for group to be able to
do the lesson successfully. better. I will be the one to ask the teacher's
opinion on how the group's presentation should be changed or what
content should be added to make the work more special. I will find
pieces of content that work for each of you in the group and put
together a complete outline. Secondly, after I have a complete outline, I
will assign specific tasks to each of you in the group. What content will
you have to do, where will you have to find ideas, how will you do it,
and when will you return it to me I will notify you in detail. Then I will
combine it into a complete lesson and assign each of you to present the
sections you have chosen. I hope my advice would be helpful.
Topic: What students study at university does not provide them with
enough knowledge and skills to work in the future They have to equip
themselves with extra knowledge and skills to be able to work
effectively. Do you agree? Give reasons for your opinion.
I agree with that opinion. Firstly, I am also a student so I can understand
that opinion. Currently, universities in Vietnam mostly teach on the
basis of theory and very few activities for students to discover and
experience more on their own. Companies always require students to
have all the necessary soft skills, but very few universities in Vietnam
can meet that requirement. Secondly, the theory classes are always
more and much heavier than the practical classes at universities. This
also makes students feel pressured and cannot have much free time to
learn more necessary skills. For example, the field I study theory is still
very much and the study is almost full week, so I don't have much free
time to learn more skills I want. So I think the opinion is completely
reasonable.
TEST 15:
Problem: A friend of yours had an argument (got angry) with another
one because of a misunderstanding. They have stopped talking with
each other for a while. You want them to make up with each other and
be friends again. What should you do?
I have a few suggestions for this problems. Firstly, I will talk to both of
them to find out what caused them to argue. Because I think that in
order to solve such a problem, it is necessary to listen to both sides to
find out the cause. I will ask both of you why you are arguing and then I
will think about how to make the story easier and solve it easier.
Secondly, I'll pick a date where the 3 of us can meet and deal with the
issue face-to-face. I will bring out the things that are wrong in the
matter of both of them. I will say all the things that both of you think
are wrong about each other or the unreasonable things that cause an
unnecessary argument. I will come up with a solution to the problem
and convince both of us to follow that solution so that the cold war can
be stopped. I hope my advice would be useful.
Topic: Some people say that it is not necessary for teachers to take
register (check students' attendance ) every lesson because students
are grown up enough to take care of their own study and be responsible
for their behaviour. Do you agree? Give reasons for your opinion.
I agree with that opinion. Firstly, I think they are old enough to know
what they should and shouldn't do. So it's up to them to decide
whether they want to study or not. They should be aware of how
important it is to learn it because they are grown up not just elementary
school students but have to wait for reminders, so I feel that teacher
check student’s attendance like that may takes a lot more time.
Secondly, attending students only makes the class have enough
quantity, but the quality is not certain. You just need to take attendance
and then each person does something completely unrelated to the
lesson, then the attendance will only become useless. So I think people
are old enough to understand what they should do, those who want to
learn will learn and if they don't want to, they won't. Attendance as a
way of forcing them to study and that will make the quality lower and
lower. So I agree with that opinion.
