1. Place of music in worship
Power of Music—“Music can be a great power for good, yet we do not
make the most of this branch of worship. The singing is generally
done from impulse or to meet special cases, and at other times those
who sing are left to blunder along, and the music loses its proper
effect upon the minds of those present. Music should have beauty,
pathos, and power. Let the voices be lifted in songs of praise and
devotion. Call to your aid, if practicable, instrumental music, and let
the glorious harmony ascend to God, an acceptable offering.”—4T

… continuation: Place of Music and worship
 The melody of praise is the atmosphere of heaven; and when
heaven comes in touch with the earth there is music and song,—
“thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.”
• Above the new-created earth, as it lay, fair and unblemished,
under the smile of God, “the morning stars sang together, and all the
sons of God shouted for joy.” So human hearts, in sympathy with
heaven, have responded to God’s goodness in notes of praise. Many
of the events of human history have been linked with song....

2. Music & worship in the OT
 Human beings apart from procreation were also created to worship God.
The Bible provides the role of music in worship that can be a guide to the
contemporary worshipper.
 As the children of Israel, journeying through the wilderness,
cheered their way by the music of sacred song, so God bids His
children today gladden their pilgrim life. ( Exo 15:1-21) There are few
means more effective for fixing His words in the memory than repeating
them in
song.
 A clear call to worship is seen when God called for a meeting between
Israel and Himself after he had brought them out of Egypt to Sinai
(Exod. 24:1). At the foot of the mountain, the Israelites became the
Assembly of God (Exod. 24:2-4). It seems that there was a full
participation of the people in this worship (Exod. 24:5-7.

Continuation: Music & worship in the OT
 The above worship scene also depicts God speaking to His people which
indicate the proclamation of the Word of God in worship
 David, the second king of Israel, was the first to use music in religious
ritual and in a professional manner. During his reign, he set the tribe of
Levi as “the custodians of the music of the divine service.” (1 Chron. 13:1-
8 cf. 2 Sam. 6:5).
 It is one of the most effective means of impressing the heart
with spiritual truth. How often to the soul hard-pressed and ready to
despair, memory recalls some word of God’s,—the long-forgotten
burden of a childhood song.

3. Music & worship in the New Testament
 The NT Church relied considerably on liturgy and singing with no
consideration to the use of musical instruments in worship. It seems that
the NT church used many of the Jewish Psalms and songs of worship
taken from the synagogue (James 5:13 … Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing
psalms).
 They also wrote their own hymns and songs of worship under the
inspiration of the Holy Spirit. ( Luke 1:46-56).
 It seems that due to how musical instruments were used in the NT era, it
discouraged their usage in the temple or synagogue. “Let the word of Christ
richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one
another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with
thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Col. 3:16).
 However, the book of Revelation gives an indication that these instruments
are used in heaven in praising God (Rev. 5:8)

4. Benefits of music
a) Music rightly employed, it is a precious gift of God, designed to
uplift the thoughts to high and noble themes, to inspire and elevate
the soul.
b) It has power to subdue rude and uncultivated natures; power to
quicken thought and to awaken sympathy, to promote harmony of
action.
c) It is one of the most effective means of impressing the heart with
spiritual truth.
d) The value of song as a means of education should never be lost
sight of.
e) As a part of religious service, singing is as much an act of worship
as is prayer.

5. Uses of music
• Music was made to serve a holy purpose, to lift the thoughts to that which is
pure, noble, and elevating, and to awaken in the soul devotion and gratitude to
God.
• A love for music leads the unwary to unite with world lovers in pleasure
gatherings where God has forbidden His children to go.
• The proper training of the voice is an important feature in education, and
should not be neglected.
• The following are the uses of music:-
 A talent of influence- The ability to sing is a talent of influence, which God desires all to cultivate and
use to His name’s glory.
 In tune with heavenly musicians- When human beings sing with the spirit and the
understanding, heavenly musicians take up the strain and join in the song of thanksgiving.
 God glorified by songs-God is glorified by songs of praise from a pure heart filled with love and
devotion to Him.

6. Implications of Biblical Perspective of Music
and Worship for Adventist Music and Worship
 The Bible, as an authoritative source of Christian doctrines and practices,
gives a clearer picture about music and worship.
 The importance and significance of music in worship is never
underestimated by the Bible.
 The use of music should be given a conscious consideration in all worship
services of the Church.
 The Bible is not against the use of musical instruments in worship.
 This biblical perspective of the use of musical instruments in worship
depicts contextualization which we should embed as the Adventist church.
 Sacred music should be encouraged among all the church members as we
discourage secular music.
 As a church we should put attention in training musician just as the
musicians in the OT were trained with skills in music.

o Lastly, the Scripture depicts a well-ordered worship
services. In both the OT and NT, worship is seen to be
done in an organized manner.
o In the same vein, the Adventist Church should ensure
order and decorum in all of its worship services.
o From the commencement to the closure of each
worship service of the Adventist Church, any form of
disorderliness and messiness should be avoided, both
among the old and the young.
