Poem - Chapter 4 A Thing of Beauty

FLAMINGO 1

The poet informs us about some beautiful things that are all around us. Beauty is certainly in the
eyes of the one who beholds. This means one can see the beauty in anything. Furthermore, the
poet talks about the numerous creations of God which we should admire. One such creation is the
Sun which provides energy. Moreover, the poet also talks about the beauty of the moon and the
natural beauty of the trees.

There are various animals around that make our world lively. The pretty flowers like daffodils
enhance the liveliness and greenery of the world. Moreover, the flowing streams of water provide
refreshment and cooling effect to us in the hot summer season. The forests have plenty of pretty
musk rose flowers. Such flowers are a beautiful sight and eyes feel the delight due to them. All such
things certainly are things of beauty. Also, one must not forget the beautiful and inspiring stories of
the brave soldiers. These brave soldiers risked and sacrificed their lives in order to protect others.

These beautiful things have a resemblance to the fountain of immortality bestowed upon us by
God as a gift and a blessing. Such beautiful things are an inspiration for all of us to continue living.
They make life worth living. Also, they also help us in maintaining our faith in goodness. Life
without these beautiful things would certainly become very hard.

The poem A Thing of Beauty tells us about the value of beautiful things that are all around us and
that one must cherish them.

overcome the challenges of life.

According to the poet, there are numerous things of beauty that help us forget our sorrows. These are the sun,
the moon, old and young trees that provide shade to 'simple sheep', daffodils, clear streams of rivers, musk-
roses in the forest and the lovely tales of mighty men.

The poet lists a number of things that cause suffering and pain, such as despondency, depression, unhealthy

Answer :

This line suggests that things of beauty bind us to the earth with a beautiful connection. According to the poet,

depression, the zeal to live a happy and content life can be derived from the sight of the beautiful bounties of
nature around us.

Answer :

The 'grandeur' of the 'mighty dead' lies in their noble deeds. They have left behind the beautiful legacy of their
brave acts. Their selfless sacrifice for their nation and deeds for the welfare of mankind still continue to
inspire us.

Do we experience things of beauty only for short moments or do they make a lasting impression on us?

Answer :

The poet believes that when we encounter a beautiful thing, even for a small moment, the pleasure remains
with us forever. It leaves a lasting impression that inspires us to live life with hope and optimism.

Answer :

The poet uses the image of 'an endless fountain of immortal drink' to describe the beautiful bounty of the
earth. The earth, like a fountain, pours unto us numerous beautiful sights like the sun, the moon, flowers,

Alliteration: Use of consonant sound at the start of two words which are close in series (Sleep-Sweet)

Metaphor: Metaphor is a common figure of speech that makes a comparison by directly relating one thing to
another unrelated thing.

bower Quiet (calmness of the bower is compared to the calming effect of a beautiful thing)

wreathing a flowery band (the beautiful things of our life bind us to the earth)

Immortal drinks ( beautiful objects of nature are forever like a never ending portion of a drink)

Imagery: Imagery is language used by poets, novelists and other writers to create images in the mind of
the reader.

(sprouting shady boon) Trees giving shade,

(daffodils with the green world they live in) growing process of daffodils,

(Clear rills) Clean river streams

(sprinkling of fair musk rose blooms) Bushes full of musk roses,

(pouring from the heaven’s brink) god providing us with best things

Antithesis: opposite words placed together (old and young)

rhyme scheme: aabbcc (forever, never, keep, sleep, breathing wreathing)

Anaphora: Use of same word in two consecutive lines (of noble natures- Of all the unhealthy)
