𝑧𝑧 = 3 + 2𝑖𝑖, 𝑤𝑤 = 1 − 𝑖𝑖

Find in the form, 𝑎𝑎 + 𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏, where 𝑎𝑎 and 𝑏𝑏 are real constants,

a. 𝑧𝑧𝑧𝑧 [2]
𝑧𝑧
b. , showing clearly how you obtained your answer. [3]
𝑤𝑤 ∗

Given that,

|𝑧𝑧 + 𝑘𝑘| = √53, where 𝑘𝑘 is a real constant.

c. Find the possible values of 𝑘𝑘 [4]

2. The cubic equation

𝑥𝑥 3 + 𝑝𝑝𝑥𝑥 2 + 𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞 + 𝑟𝑟 = 0

Where 𝑝𝑝, 𝑞𝑞 and 𝑟𝑟 are real, has roots 𝛼𝛼, 𝛽𝛽 and 𝛾𝛾

a. Given that
𝛼𝛼 + 𝛽𝛽 + 𝛾𝛾 = 4 and 𝛼𝛼 2 + 𝛽𝛽 2 + 𝛾𝛾 2 = 20

Find the values of 𝑝𝑝 and 𝑞𝑞 [5]

b. Given further that one root is 3 + i, find the value of 𝑟𝑟 [5]

3a. Prove by induction that,

2 + (3 × 2) + (4 × 22 ) + ⋯ + (𝑛𝑛 + 1)2𝑛𝑛−1 = 𝑛𝑛2𝑛𝑛

For all integers 𝑛𝑛 ≥ 1 [6]

b. Show that,
2𝑛𝑛

 (𝑟𝑟 + 1)2(𝑟𝑟−1) = 𝑛𝑛2𝑛𝑛 (2𝑛𝑛+1 − 1)

𝑟𝑟=𝑛𝑛+1
