CHAPTER I

The Problem and Its Setting

Introduction

Parental involvement in education is a vital essential for creating a cooperative

environment for the student to thrive and succeed in academics. When a student knows that

he or she is receiving support both inside and outside the school the chances of that child

becoming responsible for and active in their education are more likely know that there can

be difficulties including parents for many reasons Such parents may be too busy,

uninterested or just feel helpless.

Academic performance is impacted by parental participation examining the effects of

parental involvement in academics and the level of parental involvement in their child's

education is the goal of the inquiry as a result from home to primary school can be a difficult

change students in elementary school are moving into a period of their life when changes in

their psychological, emotional, cognitive and social traits are starting to occur parental

involvement and support are essential to their academic success during this period. Bryan

(2005) asserts that when parents are actively involved in their children's education, such kids

are more likely to achieve academic success.

Farmer (2006), claimed that parental participation included parental attitudes, acts,

fashion, and events that take place inside or outside of the classroom to boost student's

academic performance or behavioral achievement at the school where they are presently

enrolled active parental participation in their kids' education has a good and notable impact

on the lives of children, including their growth, actions, inspiration and academic success

they frequently attend school behave better, and perform better academically starting in

kindergarten, continue your education through high school and enroll in superior institutions.

1
Role of parents makes obvious messages to their kids, showing them that they're interested

in what they're doing and supporting the notion that School is crucial.

Often parents aren't involved because they are not aware of ways that they can

help keeping parents informed of upcoming tests, projects, homework assignments, and

areas of study give them some knowledge about what is going on and also makes them feel

like they are capable of helping and can be an asset to their child's education. It may also be

helpful to suggest ways that parents can aid their child in preparing and studying for tests.

Helping parents feel useful creates an essential cooperative learning environment.

Home is where education begins. Children's socialization and education are the

joint responsibilities of parents and schools. Parents must be involved in and take part in

the educational process for a child to attain academic success. The more parents are

involved, the more probable it is that their children will achieve academically as well as

become contributing members of society.

Parents, teachers, and schools can all play a role in supporting academic

performance of students. Parents can provide a positive and supportive home

environment that encourages learning and helps their child develop good study habits.

Teachers can provide engaging and challenging lessons that motivate students to learn

and help them build their knowledge and skills schools can offer resources such as

tutoring services, academic support programs and technology to help students succeed.

2
Parental participation is ultimately the most crucial element in a child's success,

according to Hull (2010). In today's competitive culture, the parents of the learner's lack

of knowledge is a grave issue in actuality, parents play an essential and unquestionably

significant part in their children's academic achievement beyond academics, parental

involvement has many other positive effects on children, such as higher motivation, self-

esteem, and self-reliance, all of which may support academic success regardless of

socioeconomic situation.

According to Weiss (2015), Parental involvement, from an economist’s

perspective, can be defined as direct effort, provided by the parent, in order to

increase educational outcomes of their children. This definition implicitly refers to an

education production function, and makes parental involvement one of its

arguments. The broad perspective adopted here mirrors the definition of family

involvement by the Harvard Family Research Project, one of the leading research

groups into family involvement outside economics: their definition includes all

activities by parents that are intentionally “linked to learning”.

Epstein (2016) alleges that there are many reasons for developing and establishing a

partnership between school, family and community. The main reason for such a partnership

is to aid students in succeeding at school. Other reason included improving school climate

and school programs, developing parental skills and leadership, assisting families in

connecting with others in the school and the community, and assisting teachers with their

work. All these reasons emphasize the importance of parents playing an active role in their

children’s education and keeping a strong and positive relationship with schools

3
According to McMahon (2016), Parent’s active involvement in their children's

education has a positive and noteworthy impact on children’s lives, including their

development, behavior, motivation and academic performance.

According to Gould (2015), “The research all shows, they say, that children do

better in school when their parents are involved.” He also found that parents are

involved in school in four ways. The first two are widely accepted: parents serve as

teachers of their children at home and also serve as volunteers and supporters at

school.

Parental involvement is found as a strong determinant for academic

performance of high school students. Wish for self-autonomy of t adolescents does

not imply that they do not want to get them involved in their academic activities.

Learners whose parents are actively involved in their academics display better

behaviors and academic outcomes (Vijaya, 2016).

4
Research Question:

This study determines how the impact of parental involvement on academic

also support their children's education financially due to their ability to relate and their

knowledge of how to proceed based on their experiences, parents and students

were the subject of this research, which began on March 2023 and ended on July

2023.
