Human Limitations

-Human existence is embodied

existence.

-We have only a certain amount of

strength to carry things or to
accomplish tasks.
Describe the taste of water.

Describe blue color to a blind person since

birth.
How will you describe how wonderful
the world is to a blind person?

Can your elbow reach your chin?

WHAT MAKES /
CAUSES A HUMAN
PERSONS’
LIMITATIONS?
What is the
human
person?
THE HUMAN PERSON AS AN
EMBODIED SPIRIT

We are “unique” because of our special

traits particularly the trait of self-
awareness, this refers to the person
having a clear perception of oneself,
including his or her thoughts, emotions,
identity, and actions.
The person who is actively
aware that he or she is
perceiving and
experiencing reality is
called the “self”.
Another trait that defines the
person is self-determination.

This refers to the capability of

persons to make choices and
decisions based on their own
preferences, monitor and
regulate their actions, and be
goal-oriented and self-directed.
We are persons because we act, and we are
aware of our own actions.

This trait to choose our own actions also

refers to the so called “free will”, the
capacity to choose a course of action from
various alternatives.

It enables a person to act willfully, control

his or her actions, and recognize himself or
herself as the source of action. But in every
choice, we made it eventually leads to the
consequence.
Dignity – Human dignity is rooted in
the nature of the human being,
meaning a person has dignity simply
because of the fact that he is human.

It is not defined by outside factors like

intelligence, beauty, skills, etc.

A person retains his dignity in spite of his

actions and behavior.
This refers to the innate right to be valued
and respected. Philosophers consider all
humans as having an inherent worth or value.
“you’re worthless!” is an insult since it attacks
the very notion of a person having value or
worth.

Each person is worth the same as another

person in the sense that every person is
priceless, unique, unrepeatable, and
irreplaceable. No person is dispensable or
interchangeable. This is the reason why
separation from the people we love, and value
is a difficult and painful experience.
Dignity also drives us to seek what
is good. Doing good deeds upholds
and promotes the dignity of the human
person. This recognition of dignity is also
the basis for the recognition of human
rights.

The Body as Transcendence

-While the body limits us, the very same

thing limitations create opportunities for
us.

Example:
Hidilyn Diaz – the strength of a woman
Manny Pacquiao – determination despite
of the limited resources in life

Transcendence

-The state of being or existence

which is above and beyond the
limits of material existence.

-Excelling, surpassing or going

beyond usual limits
THE HUMAN PERSON AS AN
EMBODIED SPIRIT

-Transcendence is a core concept

in studies of religion, spirituality
and meaning of life.

-Especially important for ageing

well (as you age, it’s having a
quality of life).
The Paradox of Possibility in Limitation

-Paradox – a statement that seems

to say two opposite things but that
may be true

-“It is through our limitations that

possibilities become real.”
The Paradox of Possibility in
Limitation

-“Be thankful that we cannot be

everything, because trying to be
so would end us up being
nothing at all.”
Job 33:4

“The Spirit of God has made

me,And the breath of the
Almighty gives me life.
