Learning Objectives
You have been tasked with creating a solution that will analyse
demographic data for the provinces of South Africa. The algorithm
for the solution (See below) and expected output has been provided
(Appendix: Expected Output).
2
You will also need to justify your solution by drafting a research
proposal (No longer than a page) on the variety of contexts in which
GIS is used within South Africa. At least 3 different contexts must be
explored and a conclusion on the value of GIS within South Africa
must be included. Refer to Concept Breakdown for details.
Question 1
Step 1:
Design a table showing populations and the area in square kilometer,
for the year 2010 and 2020 for the following provinces in South
Africa. (Reference your data) (15)
Gauteng
Western Cape
Kwa Zulu Natal
Free state
Mpumalanga
3
Step 2:
Design a pie chart showing the Gross domestic product of the above-
mentioned provinces. (5)
Step: 3
Now you have been assigned an IT intern from a Lettuce Solutions,
that will design the solution. You need to provide them with above
collected information.
Explain in detail what is population distribution and density.
Briefly discuss factors that affect population distribution and
density.
Also explain Gross Domestic Product.
Show them how to calculate population density and GDP Per
capita

Concept Breakdown
1. Solution Development
1.1. Implements Algorithm Accurately
- Student has translated the algorithm given into a working
Java solution.
2. Research Proposal
2.1. Style of Writing
- Formal, fluent and accurate throughout.
2.2. Structure
- Clear introduction, body and conclusion. A maximum of 3
contexts have been explored in-depth. Conclusion on the
value of GIS within South Africa is well-thought and
constructed.
2.3. Referencing
- Accurate and relevant evidence used. Harvard referencing
is present.
