Application of FEA in Gas Turbine Design with Reference to 9HA.

01 at 1230MW Haveli
Bahadur Shah:
During my internship at the 1230MW Haveli Bahadur Shah, I had the opportunity to closely observe
the 9HA.01 gas turbine, a significant component of the power generation facility. This hands-on
experience provided valuable insights into the practical application of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in
gas turbine design and operation.

1. Stress Analysis: The 9HA.01 gas turbine, being a critical component in power generation,
requires rigorous stress analysis. My internship experience highlighted the importance of FEA
in assessing the structural integrity of gas turbine components, especially in high-power
settings. FEA can help identify potential stress concentrations in the turbine's rotating and
stationary parts, ensuring the turbine's reliability under various operating conditions.

2. Thermal Analysis: The gas turbine I observed operated under extreme temperature
conditions. FEA is instrumental in simulating heat transfer within turbine components, such
as blades and casings, to ensure they can withstand the intense thermal stresses encountered
during operation. My internship allowed me to appreciate how FEA plays a pivotal role in
optimizing the thermal performance of gas turbines.

3. Vibration Analysis: Gas turbines, like the 9HA.01, experience dynamic loads and vibrations
during operation. My experience at the power generation facility underscored the significance
of FEA in predicting the natural frequencies and modes of vibration in turbine components.
This is vital for maintaining the turbine's stability and minimizing the risk of damage caused
by excessive vibrations.

4. Rotor Dynamics: Gas turbine rotors, such as those in the 9HA.01, exhibit complex dynamic
behaviour. My internship exposed me to the challenges associated with rotor dynamics. FEA
can model these dynamics, helping engineers ensure the rotor remains balanced and operates
within safe limits.

5. Materials Selection: The 9HA.01 gas turbine, operating at high temperatures and stresses,
demands careful material selection. My time at the power generation facility emphasized the
importance of FEA in evaluating materials for gas turbine components. FEA assists in choosing
materials that meet stringent performance criteria while considering factors such as weight,
cost, and durability.

Incorporating my internship experience at the 1230MW Haveli Bahadur Shah and my observations
regarding the 9HA.01 gas turbine allows me to appreciate the real-world applications of FEA in the
design and operation of critical power generation equipment. This reference highlights the relevance
and practicality of FEA in ensuring the structural integrity, safety, and performance of gas turbines,
contributing to the broader understanding of its applications in engineering assignments and projects.

Application of FEA in my FYP - Multifunctional AI-Powered Robotic Solution for Bomb Disposal and
Military Surveillance:

1. Structural Analysis: FEA can be applied to analyse the structural components of our robotic
solution, ensuring that it can withstand physical stresses encountered during bomb disposal
tasks and harsh environmental conditions.

2. Dynamic Analysis: FEA can simulate the dynamic behaviour of our robotic system, considering
factors like impact forces and vibrations during bomb disposal. This helps in designing a stable
and reliable platform.

3. Thermal Analysis: If our robotic solution includes electronic components or operates in

extreme environments, FEA can help assess the thermal performance and heat dissipation
within the system.

4. Material Selection: FEA can assist in choosing the right materials for the robot's construction,
considering factors like weight, strength, and resistance to chemical agents or explosives.

5. Sensors and Actuators Integration: FEA can help optimize the integration of sensors and
actuators within the robotic system, ensuring proper functioning and minimal interference
with the overall structure.

6. Risk Assessment: FEA can be used to simulate potential scenarios related to bomb disposal,
helping to identify potential failure points or vulnerabilities in the robot's design and inform
safety measures.

7. Optimization: FEA can aid in optimizing the design of our robotic solution, leading to better
performance, enhanced maneuverability, and improved safety during bomb disposal and
surveillance operations.
