TERMINOLOGY

Direct solar radiation:

It is the solar radiation propagating along the line joining the receiving surface and the sun. It is also
referred as beam radiation. It is measured through pyrehiliometer.

Diffuse solar radiation

It is the solar radiation scattered by aerosols, dust and molecules. It does not have a unique direction
and also dose not follows the fundamental principals of optics. It is measured by
shading pyrenometer.

Global solar radiation

The global solar radiation is the sum of the direct and diffuse solar radiation and is sometimes referred
to as the global radiation. The most common measurements of solar radiation are total radiation on a
horizontal surface often referred to as ‘global radiation’ on the surface. It is measured by pyrenometer.

Irradiance

Irradiance is the rate at which radiant energy is incident on a surface, per unit area of surface.

Direct Normal Insolation (DNI)

It is the direct component of the solar radiation incident on normal to the collector; means the
angle of incidence of incident solar radiation with the normal of the collector is zero
throughout the day.

INTRODUCTION

The Sun’s rays are composed of photons, which contain various degree of energy, and this energy
corresponds to the different wave-lengths of the solar spectrum The solar power is now being used to
generate the much wanted electricity using the photovoltaic energy, converting the Sun's rays to
generate electric power. These photo cells are devices, made from silicon alloys, which produce
electric energy when the Sun light falls on it.

When the sunlight strikes a photocell, the photons falling on it either gets absorbed, reflected, or pass
through. It is those photons that get absorbed produces electricity. As the Sun's rays strike the surface
of the photovoltaic cell, electron migration takes place, and this creates imbalance of charge, which
appears as a voltage potential at the output. A large array of thee photovoltaic cells are used to
produce enough electricity to light up a small house. The Sun light is therefore a renewable energy
source, which could be harnessed to provide power. India has a vast potential of renewable energy
resource which is still untapped. The Electricity Act 2003 has paved way through several enabling

1
TECHNO-COMMERCIAL OFFER – Ver.01

provisions such as Section 86(1)(e) as well as National Electricity Policy and National Tariff Policy
mandates regulatory commissions to specify minimum percentage for procurement of energy from
renewable energy sources, which is expected to provide significant thrust for harnessing of renewable
energy sources in future.

In order to formulate a comprehensive legislation imparting renewed thrust to coordinated

development of the power sector in the country, the Electricity Act, 2003 (EA 03) was enacted during
2003. This Act gave a new thrust to the reform process in power sector. The EA 03 and other policy
measures such as the National Electricity Policy (NEP) 2005 and National Tariff Policy (NTP) 2009;
recognized the role of renewable energy technologies as grid-connected and stand-alone systems on
power generation.

JAWAHARLAL NEHRU SOLAR MISSION,2010 AIMS 100 GW by 2022

THE SUN is the source of solar energy. This energy hits the earth and is extremely powerful. A small
percentage of sunlight hitting the earth is sufficient to meet the power and energy needs of the entire
population on the planet. Each year, India is able to receive well over 4500 trillion KWH of pure solar
energy, thanks to its geographical location. This is much higher than the annual power consumption of
India.

With the help of solar power technology, we can tap sun energy in many ways. Solar cells, otherwise
known as photovoltaic or photoelectric cells are the most popular devices that help to convert sunlight into
electricity. In combination with modules, they are used to manufacture solar panels. Solar energy is also
used in the functioning of solar water heaters, melting steel, creating hydrogen fuel and making electricity
through solar furnaces. The reflective surfaces used in these solar furnaces helps in concentrating all of sun’s
energy into a strategic point, which in turn generates a large amount of heat and thereby electricity.

The Indian economy is booming towards achieving double-digit GDP growth rate and basic infrastructure is
the key ingredient to any economy. Hence, infrastructure development needs to be undertaken at the same
pace, in order to support the momentum of economy. Among others, electricity is at the forefront of basic
infrastructure. The contingent issue that needs monotonic focus is shortages in average energy demand and
peak demand of electricity.

In order to meet the following objectives:

• Requirement of energy shortage

• To reduce the environmental impact of existing sources of electricity

• To reduce the dependency on fossil fuel for power generation

• To achieve the targets of rural electrification

TECHNOLOGY

The proposed plant will comprises solar photovoltaic cell technology for power generation.
A solar cell is a device that converts the energy of sunlight directly into electricity by the

1

photovoltaic effect. Sometimes the term solar cell is reserved for devices intended specifically to
capture energy from sunlight such as solar panels and solar cells, while the term photovoltaic cell is
used when the light source is unspecified. Assemblies of cells are used to make solar panels, solar
modules, or photovoltaic arrays. Photovoltaic’s is the field of technology and research related to the
application of solar cells in producing electricity for practical use.

PHOTOVOLTAICS
Photovoltaic (PV) or solar cells as they are often referred to, are semiconductor devices that convert
sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. Groups of PV cells are electrically configured into
modules and arrays, which can be used to charge batteries, operate motors, and to power any number
of electrical loads. With the appropriate power conversion equipment, PV systems can produce

1
TECHNO-COMMERCIAL OFFER – Ver.01

alternating current (AC) compatible with any conventional appliances, and operate in parallel with
and interconnected to the utility grid.

HOW PV CELLS WORK

A typical silicon PV cell is composed of a
thin wafer consisting of an ultra-thin layer
of phosphorus-doped (N-type) silicon on top
of a thicker layer of boron-doped (P-type)
silicon. An electrical field is created near
the top surface of the cell where these two
materials are in contact, called the P-N
junction. When sunlight strikes the
surface of a PV cell, this electrical field
provides momentum and direction to light-stimulated electrons, resulting in a flow of current when
the solar cell is connected to an electrical load.
Regardless of size, a typical silicon PV cell produces about 0.5 – 0.6 volt DC under open-circuit, no-
load conditions. The current (and power) output of a PV cell depends on its efficiency and size
(surface area), and is proportional the intensity of sunlight striking the surface of the cell. For
example, under peak sunlight conditions a typical commercial PV cell with a surface area of 160
cm^2 (~25 in^2) will produce about 2 watts peak power. If the sunlight intensity were 40 percent of
peak, this cell would produce about 0.8 watts.

PV CELLS, MODULES, & ARRAYS

Photovoltaic cells are connected electrically in series and/or parallel circuits to produce higher
voltages, currents and power levels. Photovoltaic modules consist of PV cell circuits sealed in an
environmentally protective laminate, and are the fundamental building block of PV systems.
Photovoltaic panels include one or more PV modules assembled as a pre-wired, field-installable unit.
A photovoltaic array is the complete power-generating unit, consisting of any number of PV modules
and panels.

The performance of PV modules and arrays are generally rated according to their maximum DC
power output (watts) under Standard Test Conditions (STC). Standard Test Conditions are defined by
a module (cell) operating temperature of 25o C (77 F), and incident solar irradiance level of 1000
W/m2 and under Air Mass 1.5 spectral distribution. Since these conditions are not always typical of

1
TECHNO-COMMERCIAL OFFER – Ver.01

how PV modules and arrays operate in the field, actual performance is usually 85 to 90 percent of the
STC rating.
Today’s photovoltaic modules are extremely safe and reliable products, with minimal failure rates and
projected service lifetimes of 20 to 30 years. Most major manufacturers offer warranties of twenty or
more years for maintaining a high percentage of initial rated power output.

HOW A PV SYSTEM WORKS

Simply put, PV systems are like any other electrical power generating systems, just the equipment
used is different than that used for conventional electromechanical generating systems. However, the
principles of operation and interfacing with other electrical systems remain the same, and are guided
by a well-established body of electrical codes and standards. Although a PV array produces power
when exposed to sunlight, a number of other components are required to properly conduct, control,
convert, distribute, and store the energy produced by the array.
Depending on the functional and operational requirements of the system, the specific components
required, and may include major components such as a DC-AC power inverter, battery bank, system
and battery controller, auxiliary energy sources and sometimes the specified electrical load
(appliances). In addition, an assortment of balance of system (BOS) hardware, including wiring,
overcurrent, surge protection and disconnect devices, and other power processing equipment. Figure 3
show a basic diagram of a photovoltaic system and the relationship of individual components.

De-Rating
The overall performance of the these systems mainly dependson the DNI availability and partially
depends upon ambienttemperature and prevailing wind speed. In addition the deratingfactor is also
associated with the age of the system.

Temperature De-rating
Altitude and ambient temperature affects the performance andenergy output of ISS. Over the
operating temperature range, -20°C to 55 °C , power is de-rated by ~2.5-3.0% for every
temperature increase of 10 °C above 20 °C ambient, at 850
W/m2 of DNI.For elevations above 1890 m [6,200 ft], increased fanperformance may be required.
Calculating the de-rating factor for high temperature
environments is as following;
850 W/m2, 20 °C >> 3,000 W
850 W/m2, 30 °C >> 3,000 W*(1-0.03) = ~2,910 W

Environmental impacts

Alike fossil fuel based technologies, solar power does not lead to any harmful emissions during
operation, but the production of the panels leads to some amount of pollution. This is often referred to
as the energy input to output ratio. In some analysis, if the energy input to produce it is higher than the
output it produces it can be considered environmentally more harmful than beneficial. Also,
placement of Photovoltaic’s affects the environment. If they are located where photosynthesizing
plants would normally grow, they simply substitute one potentially renewable resource (biomass) for
another. It should be noted, however, that the biomass cycle converts solar radiation energy to
chemical energy (with significantly less efficiency than photovoltaic cells alone). And if they are
placed on the sides of buildings (such as on the Co-operative Insurance Tower in Manchester) or
fences, or rooftops (as long as plants would not normally be placed there), or in the desert they are
purely additive to the renewable power base.

Solar Power Advantages

A. Solar power is pollution-free during use.

B. PV installations can operate for many years with little maintenance or intervention after their initial
set-up, so after the initial capital cost of building any solar power plant, operating costs are extremely
low compared to existing power technologies.

C. Solar electric generation is economically superior where grid connection or fuel transport is
difficult, costly or impossible. e.g.Long-standing examples include satellites, island communities,
remote locations and ocean vessels.

D. Solar electric generation reduces grid loading.

E. Grid-connected solar electricity can be used locally thus reducing transmission/distribution losses.

F. Compared to fossil and nuclear energy sources, very little research money has been invested in the
development of solar cells.
