BASIC TIPS ON HOW TO WRITE A GOOD ESSAY

 MAIN ESSAY STRUCTURE

Every essay write-up will have three (3) parts below.

1. Introduction
Content:
o Presents your topic
o Provides background
o Gives your thesis statement (the sentence that states the MAIN IDEA of the
topic of discussion which reflects your opinion or judgment).

Note: Write a brief attractive introduction which the reader understands your
point of view based on your chosen topic.

2. Body
Content:
o Core argument & analysis
o Present evidence (e.g. quotes)
o One main point per paragraph
o Each paragraph starts with a topic sentence
o All paragraphs relate to your main idea (thesis)

In short form we say “TOSUEXCO” You will have the following in every
paragraph.
 Topic Sentence
 Supporting Sentence then elaborate
 Provide examples or quote a real event that happened in line with your
topic of discussion to bring clear picture.
 Then recommend your topic and summarize it.

 Make sure to have two or three main ideas discussed in the body and not more than that.
 Topic sentence must capture the main idea you want to discuss then follow the sequence
of tips above.
 Tell your teacher about “counter argument”

3. Conclusion
Content
o Ties together your main points
o Show why your argument matters
This structure is applied in first two forms of essay. Can be;

1. Argumentative Essay
2. Expository Essay
3. Narrative or
4. Descriptive Essay

Note: An essay is focused piece of writing designed to inform or persuade.

- Argumentative and expository essays are focused on relating information and making
clear points while narrative and descriptive essays are about exercising creativity and
writing in an interesting way.
- Source or reference of where you get information or examples must be stated. Put in
bracket form. “National News Paper, TV, Internet” e.g. At the end of your discussion
make quotations like this http://www.emtv.pg.report :
- Seek some help from your English Teacher.
- Pages must be less than 5. Write to the point.

ARGUEMENTATIVE is about;

 Forming an opinion via research


 Building an evidence-based argument

The TOPIC will either be in Question or just a Statement

e.g. 1 has the rise of the internet had a positive or negative impact on education?

2. Peter O’Neil is the best Prime Minister in the history of PNG Politics.

“They might ask to write an argumentative essay based on such question or statement”

EXPOSITORY is about;

 Knowledge of a topic “what you know about the topic, you will explain which is based
on research following the essay format above”
 Communication information clearly.

e.g. They will ask about explaining PNG identity “then you will explain what makes up PNG to
be it is.” You will talk about every aspect of PNG but to the point.

You will describe;

 PNG’s common language supported by few languages of other provinces you may
familiar with, PNG culture. You can describe Hela’s culture and identity (traditional way
of dressing which is world’s outstanding dressing) or many other PNG way of doing
things can be explained like way of cooking. Kind of ingredients and recipe used..etc.

NARRATIVE is about;

 Creative language use


 Write about a story of your past experiences in life and must be very interesting to read
by the reader
 Use more descriptive words. Describe the nouns properly and also your experiences so
that what you felt must also be felt by the reader as he/she reads.
 Must have a good reflection of your narration at first so that the reader will make quick
conclusion that the story will be like this.

DESCRIPTIVE is about;

 Creative language use


 Describing a place, a person or any objects that you feel like describing. Describing Lake
Ekari or anything you have seen or known or Mendi Town etc.

Note: in narrative and descriptive writing, you must have a structure like mountain. Take the
reader from a bottom of a mountain, climb up the mountain then take him/her down (setting of
your story or description must have a climax “interesting part and sad part” and make a good
concluding story.

Choose one of the essay topics below and write an Argumentative & Expository Essay.

Expository Essay Topics;

1. Has the rise of the internet had a positive or negative impact on education?
2. Explain the causes and effects/implications of Global Warming.
What are some actions that people and government can take to address the issue?

Take these Topics to your friends, discuss and write following the essay structure.

Argumentative (for or against)

1. Is it good to establish relationship in the early stages of education?


2. Usage Mobile phone by the students bridges successful completion of their studies.

Descriptive Essay Topic

1. Hela’s Traditional Dressing

Hint: Compare with other PNG culture’s dressing


Narrative Essay Topic

1. My Childhood Experience

Note:

1. The essay samples attached are easy to understand.


2. Read through them and understand how the topics are discussed. Understand the logic
and sequence of explanations and argument.
3. Select your interested topics from the few samples and paraphrase or put them in
your own words following the exact essay structure above. That’s for your practical.
4. After you are done, choose one topic of each essay types stated above, do write-ups and
send them over. I’ll make corrections and send them over before your written expression.
