Answer these questions
1. Do you really think we are all one? In what sense do you think that is possible?
R//: I think that we are all one because we come from the same background, we have
similar beliefs and everyone is formed in their own culture. It is possible to say that we
are one in the cultural sense by regions, municipalities, countries, cities, etc.

2. Write all the possible similarities all humans on Earth have.

R//: We are all born from our mothers, at the moment of birth no one is stronger than
anyone else, in the end we all die, we learn to move and walk, etc.

1. What are the 11 dramatic changes that the world has been experiencing during the last two
decades? Write 1 o 2 sentences using your own words and PASIVE VOICE.
R//:
- The buildings have heights previously unimaginable.
- Phones are something that all people have and need.

2. Which of these situations do you find most worrying? Why?

R//: One of the situations that I find most worrying is climate change, because is becoming a sad
reality. People have been aware of climate change for a long time, but its consequences have
become more evident in recent years. Climate records are being broken at an alarming speed,
with the last four years being the hottest in history.
Meanwhile, the effects of climate change are a reality for residents of Pacific island regions, who
are having to evacuate and relocate as their towns remain underwater.

3. Why does the author mention September 11 of 2001 as one of the dramatic changes?
R//: The author mentions it as a dramatic change because this day created great effects in the
world.
On the one hand, it created resentment toward Arabs and Muslims in the Western world that has
not diminished over the years. The attacks also led to wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The airline
industry has suffered dramatic changes due to the attacks.
The biggest change in the world that has come about since 9/11 has been the way people think
about terrorism. Before the attacks, the US government did not prosecute terrorism suspects in
military courts, and terrorism was not the focal point of political campaigns or 24-hour news.
4. Which other dramatic change should be added to this list?
R//: Now people no longer have to worry about breathing in other people's cigarette smoke when
they go out to eat.

III. Open this webpage and notice how change happens in the world

https://www.worldometers.info/

1. What aspects of the world are getting better and what aspects worse?
R//: A good thing is that there are more births than deaths per year and per day, more
bicycles are produced than cars per day, and the suicide figures are not exorbitant.
But, the majority of conclusions are negative: a lot of money is spent on video games
every day; This year many hectares of forest have been lost, a lot of land has been lost
due to soil erosion, CO2 emissions are exaggerated and many toxic chemicals have been
released into the environment. There are many undernourished people in the world,
overweight people, obese people, and although the number of people who die of hunger
today is not very high, the ideal would be for no one to die of hunger. There are many
deaths caused by water-related diseases and there are many people who do not have
access to a source of safe drinking water. There are more and more people with HIV and
many of them are dying, in addition, there are many deaths caused by cancer and tobacco
smoke. And a huge amount of money is lost on illegal drugs.

How has the world changed since you were born?

I made a comparison between Colombia and the United States since 2004. Colombia has had
economic growth since 2004.
The United States has had stable economic growth, although with declines due to the 2008
financial crisis. It has maintained its position as one of the main global economies.

Colombia has made significant progress in reducing violence and efforts to demobilize guerrilla
groups and reduce crime rates have been notable. Meanwhile, the United States has faced
security challenges, including debates over gun violence and ongoing concerns about border
security.
Both countries have experienced changes in their social and cultural dynamics. Colombia has
seen greater recognition of its cultural diversity and efforts to promote inclusion.

Think about these questions

1. What are the possessions that you treasure most?

R//: One of the things I keep and take care of the most are my stuffed animals, which I
really like to collect, just like Barbie dolls.

2. Why do you think we keep things we do not use or need?

R//: I believe that we see some things that we do not use and we convince ourselves that
we will use them later or we simply have a certain emotional attachment to these objects
and we do not throw them away.
3. How do you think media leads us into buying things we do not even want or need?
R//: I think it's because they have good marketing and this catches everyone's attention,
leading them to buy unnecessary things simply because they are pretty, because they have
a discount or because I will use them later.
