Another influence on an individual’s adaptation
is access to deviant roles. Using a means of goal
achievement—whether legitimate or illegitimate—
requires access to two structures (Cloward, 1959).
The first is a learning structure—an environment
in which an individual can learn the information
and skills required. A shoplifter needs to learn
how to conceal objects quickly, how to spot plain-
