RECAP
.
To refresh of our previous lesson on “Contemporary Characteristic of

Performing Arts”, here is the highlighted core concept.

A defining characteristic Contemporary Performing Art is the body of

an actor/actress and all performers as well as the conceptual materials on

which performance art is based. Performing arts have different forms and it

is the performing body that is considered as the primary medium. Other

key components that define the characteristics of contemporary performing

arts are time, space and the relationship between performer and the

audience.

LESSON
STYLISTIC TENDENCIES
Art is a universal language. All forms of arts are created with the

application of styles and techniques in consonance of what the artist wishes

to express. Philippine contemporary art has no distinct single characteristic,

all of its artworks are defined by the innovative craftsmanship of an artist

using his/her unique styles and techniques. Contemporary artists have

been the front movers in creating and promoting new breed of arts to the

world. Contemporary art speaks the status and issues of our society on

education, governance, politics, economy, culture, human rights, religion,

global concerns and many others. Art styles and techniques do change
through times in so many tendencies, however, the elements and principles

of arts remain inseparable.

Stylistics is the study of the ways of creating art in which meaning is

created through the language of art. The face of art is continuously changing

as time passes by. Contemporary artists are creative enough to create art to

serve as their instrument of telling a story and voicing out their ideas to a

certain issue.

The tendencies in art fundamentally applied to emphasize artistic

trends using different art forms, various media, unique subjects, new styles

and technique or any other aesthetic dimension of arts. The idea of style in

arts is complicated and sometimes confusing simply because the term style

may refer to any of the following meanings:

a. style of art from a particular period of time.

b. style of art from a particular place / region.

c. style of art from a distinct technique of an individual artist.

d. style of art from a certain group of artists.

e. style of art based from technical or artistic approach (Pointillism,

Photorealism, abstract, realistic etc.).

The style in arts deals to the arrangement of different objects into a

group of categories that leads to easier understand and highlight its

substance of expression. Its significance to study artistic styles of arts are as

follows:
1. To gain useful categories for thinking about the common traits of

artworks, created at various times and places.

2. To comprehend the artists, periods, cultures and regions in whose art a

particular style frequently appears.

3. To compare and/or judge works of art that seem related by a look, or

feeling, or subject matter.

4. To understand the connections between an artist’s creative approach and

our reactions to their art piece.

5. To get special information, the core scoop within social changes.

FOUR BROAD CATEGORIES OF STYLE

The preceding four broad categories of style are used to classify any

art pieces we perceive and will help us to understand the motivation behind

an artwork and evaluate as well its intrinsic value.

I. The Style of Objective Accuracy

This style attempts to accurately represent what we see the physical objects,

people or the world around us. It creates an impression of reality through a

selective use of visual facts where contemporary artists imitate an

appearance to convey moving drama about human life stories. As the artists

combine their representational skill to create a psychological impact and

their representation to become an interpretation of reality, without revealing

his/her own identity. An artist can do objective accuracy in two ways: an

artist as detached observer (where artwork seems made by a reporter who is

observing a subject, or a photographer using camera) or an artist as

selective eye illusion of reality (where art is created by eliminating details

that the eye might see). This can be done by direct piling up of detail to

create an impression of the complexity of the object or the suppression of

detail without missing its essential traits. Such styles include the Realism,

Photorealism and Stylization.

II. The Style of Formal Order

This style shapes the association of contemporary arts to the stability

and a performance to its implication in the world. This creates with the

emphasis of order in measure, proportion, balance, harmony and

relationships. The sense of order or ideal is characterized on this style. The

different ways which an artist can sustain their work with stability and

order are as follows:

a. Idealization – refers to the manner of portraying people, places or things

in a romanticized and unrealistically perfect form.

b. Intellectual Order – the presence of intellectual concept and style

applied to an artwork. An example of this is cubism style in painting.

c. Biomorphic Order – the term biomorphic originated from the Greek

words “bios” means life and “morphe” meaning form. This describes
the imagery or visual language in the more abstract types of surrealist

painting and sculpture.

d. Aesthetic Order – refers to the beauty and taste of a certain artwork

characterized of its pleasing qualities. It involves the factors of

balance, color, movement, patterns, scale and visual weight to enhance

the functionality of arts.

III. The Style of Emotion

This style refers to the expression of feelings. It is a big challenge to

every contemporary artist to arouse emotion of the viewers. The attention

and connection of feelings defines the beauty of an artwork. Emotion of an

artwork may feature joy, sorrow, fear, anger and others. Romanticism,

anxiety and despair; joy and celebration; and distortion are the

variations of the style of emotion.

IV. The Style of Fantasy

The style of fantasy is a genre of art that deals on magical or

supernatural themes, ideas, characters, structures or settings. This style

deals on the invention of new forms not generally found in the speculative

fiction art. Fantasy can be based on a lot of different things such as

Utopian ideals, myth; dreams and hallucinations; and Scientific

Fantasy.
