General P. 4
General
1-2 Regarding oil concentration
1. The FOCAS-1800 units are 100% inspected/tested, set with the oil alarm operating point to 15 ppm at our factory, and
then shipped.
For the oil concentration of 15 ppm, oil, especially emulsified oil, is characterized by its invisibility in oil water.
2. FOCAS-1800 issues normal operation signals at oil concentration below 15 ppm and alarm output signals in other cases.
3. Breaking the stamped seal inside the equipment constitutes a fraudulent act. Never break the seal. (See Page 9.)
Do not access the internals except for those instructed in this manual; such an action is prohibited by law.
4. Inspection after delivery must basically be conducted by a person qualified by Fellow Kogyo in accordance with
the IMO regulation.
Results of inspection and operation accompanied by the data and time are recorded on the memory card mounted on the
equipment. For details or other related information, contact our sales department or sales agent.

1-3 Features
1. The FOCAS-1800 automatically operates by utilizing a sample water pressure, matching operations of oil
separators or pumps.
2. Cumbersome manual washing is mitigated by the auto-washing function of the detection section (optional).
3. The equipment is structured for easy maintenance and inspection by displaying an error code at equipment
failure or indicating stain accumulated on the detection section.
4. Operational records including defect alarms are saved in the memory card and can be reviewed as needed.
5. Only the oil concentration is measured and not influenced by SS components (suspended turbid substances
excluding oil) or surface-active agent.
6. The alarming system is of a fail-safe type. An oil alarm is issued for the oil concentration of 15 ppm or more
and a defect alarm for defective sample water or meter failure.

1-4 Principle of measurement Full optical continuous measurement method

The CPU calculates variances of shapes, sizes and immixed pigments of foreign materials or particles continuously measured,
based on pattern differences of oil particles, reflected scattering light, refracted light, transmitted light, etc. through multiple
light-receiving elements. In a particular concentration range for a particular light intensity and wavelength, the higher
concentration of intervening substances tends to result in reduced straight transmitted light (light intensity) and increased
refracted light and reflected scattering light. The amount of this change in reduction or increase is used for the calculation to
only determine an oil concentration while limiting the impact by colors and dusts as small as possible.

Note  The response time of the bilge alarm is specified to be within 5 seconds and that of the entire bilge
discharge system within 20 seconds. (The piping length affects the response time.)
 Sample and clean water piping
1. For piping the sample and clean water inlet and outlet, use a copper tube in the O.D. and I.D. of 8 and 6, respectively.
2. For clean water, use drinking water or equivalent. It is required for sensor compensation.
3. Use the product within the range of the operational pressure for sample/clean water (0.03 - 0.3MPa).
4. To prevent dirt from mixing in from the clean water line, wash it.
 Air piping for the product equipped with the washing unit
1. Use a copper tube in the O.D. and I.D. of 8 and 6, respectively.
2. Use dry air passed through a filter.
(A large distance between the filter and oil concentration detector may result in occurrence of dew condensation in the
tube. Shorten the piping length as much as possible.)
3. (1) The air operating pressure is 0.3 - 0.9MPa.
(2) In the automatic operation mode, the product operates for four strokes after termination of operation (the amount of
air used for 1 stroke: 40 cm3).

5-4-3 Storing the memory card

 Due to regulations, operation records may require to be verified. For verification, it is replaced with the previous
memory card if a memory card has been used for less than 18 months since its replacement.
 Put the memory card to be stored for 18 months in a non-charging bag, write the replacement date, and carefully
store it for the period. (The memory becomes re-usable 18 months later.)

5-5 Indicating stain on the detection section

 The extent of stain currently accumulated on the sample water detection tube is indicated for the customer to determine
the necessity of cleaning.

 Heavy stain results in “E14” blinking on the indicator (14), and also blinking of the Oil and Defect Alarm lamps
(17, 18) with the alarms output. (Manual washing of the sample water detection tube is required.)

1. The indication remains as is until stain is automatically measured and operation is restarted upon completion of
“AUTO” operation in the clean water and washing modes.
2. Press the Valve switch (25) if manual stain indication is desired.

How to determine the necessity of cleaning

Use the Stain of Detector lamp (15).
The green lamp lights up. Normal with the clean detection tube
The yellow lamp lights up. Due to stain, washing is required.
The red lamp lights up. Due to heavy stain, measurement of the oil concentration is impossible, a defect alarm is issued,
and the operation is stopped. Manually wash the detection tube.

7-8 Zero point compensation

The zero point compensation is a function to be conducted when the zero oil concentration is not calculated due to oil
film or foreign substances attached to the walls of the detection section after prolonged use of the product.
Periodical cleaning inside the detection section is required.

Before conducting a zero point compensation, perform cleaning according to the item 4 below.
Verify the zero point every other year as an indication, depending on conditions of the bilge system and
frequency of cleaning performed.
This product is a supersensitive measurement device to detect the concentration of 15 ppm; use drinking water
or equivalent as clean water to be referenced for the zero point compensation. (The amount of 500 ml, or
amount of one filled 500 ml PET bottle, is sufficient.)
The zero point compensation is possible at 5 ppm or less. Compensation at over 5 ppm or use of water other
than clean water may result in frequent occurrence of errors, followed by impossible operation.
The zero point compensation function is used to compensate the influence by stain in the sample water detection
tube, while the stain indication function is used for measuring physical amount of stain. As such, zero point
compensation is not effective for cleaning the detection tube.
When cleaning or feeding clean water, shut off the power supply and close the housing of the product.
Zero point compensation does not function during oil concentration measurement.

10. General Management and Instructions
The 1800-type concentration detector is a precision instrument for detecting oil component in the order of millionth. The
product must undergo precision verification and IOPP certificate renewal inspection by the manufacturer or a party approved
by the manufacturer within 5 years of use in order to be assured with its precision other than the purpose of troubleshooting.
(Replacement with a calibrated product is allowed.)

It is recommended that the customer request sales agent or the manufacturer to check, calibrate or precision-verify the
product every one to two years (as an ISO standard) in order to retain the product’s measurement accuracy.

Checkup, repair or precision verification after delivery must be conducted in accordance with the IMO regulations by
a person qualified by Fellow Kogyo.

Breaking the stamped seal inside the product constitutes a fraudulent act (see Page 9). Never break it. Moreover,
do not access components for other than the purpose of inspection as specified in the operation manual. Such an
unspecified action is prohibited by law.

 Breaking the product’s stamped seal on a ship is not allowed (such operation is
deemed as modification and unconformable to the regulation). See Page 9.
 The batteries should regularly be replaced. Their life span is about 2 years. Page 18.
 The data of operation results recorded on the memory card should be stored for 18
months. Page 19.
 Silica gel (desiccant agent) should regularly be replaced. (Indication is blue for
good and pink for replacement based on checking every 6 months.) See Page 26.
 Cleaning of the detector tube should regularly be performed by using dedicated
cleaning solution and a brush. See Pages 27 and 28.
In particular, the detection section is related to the measurement accuracy.
Loosen only (a) and (b), as specified in Sections 7-6-1a and 1b where cleaning is
described. Otherwise, the accuracy may be disturbed or defect caused, and also
the law is violated.
 Be careful about mounting O-rings. Water leakage may occur, resulting in defect
caused. See Pages 27 and 28.

Perform cleaning once every 10 times of operation for the product with the automatic cleaning function unequipped and once
every 6 months with said function equipped as an indication.

The degree of contamination of the oil concentration detector is significantly reduced by keeping the detection section clean
after use of the product through conducting automatic cleaning with clean water and filling the detection section with such
water.
It is strongly recommended that a clean water line is installed and clean water equivalent to drinking water is used.
If freeze is forecasted, drain water from the detection section.
