    AT THE AIRPORT – WORD LIST

    • administration = the whole organization


    • airport traffic = the planes that take off and land
    • arrive = to get to the place you are going to
    • assistant = person who works for an airline
    • baggage = the bags and suitcases you have when travelling
    • baggage claim = area where you get your bags and suitcases after landing
    • bearable = difficult or unpleasant, but something you can manage
    • board = get on
    • boarding card = a ticket that you get which you must show when you get
    on a plane
    • cargo = goods that are transported on a ship or plane
    • catering = company that prepares food and drinks for airlines
    • charge = to ask money for a service
    • charter = planes that travel for certain groups of people at certain times
    • commercial = here: airports that operate in order to make money
    • connect = link
    • convenient = nice, pleasant, comfortable
    • cope = manage, deal with
    • crack = break apart
    • currently = at the moment, right now
    • department = section
    • destination = the place that someone or something is going to
    • duty= a tax you pay on something you buy
    • engineering = here : technical things
    • entire = whole
    • equipment = tools and machines you need to do a job
    • facilities = rooms, machines and services that are used for something
    • fee = the money you pay to use something
    • fire department = the organization that works to stop and put out fires
    • forbidden = not allowed
    • foreign = different from your own
    • gift shop = place where you buy presents and souvenirs
    • guide = lead; show where to go
    • handle = deal with
    • hangar = very large building in which airplanes are kept and repaired

    • in charge of = in control of
    • interfere = get in the way of
    • label = piece of paper that you put around an object - it has information
    on it
    • length = how long something is
    • load = to put goods on a ship or plane
    • lounge = waiting room at an airport
    • mark = show the position of something
    • means of travel = way of travelling
    • newsstand = place where you get newspapers, magazines and books
    • ordinary = normal, nothing special
    • originally = at first
    • parking fee = the money someone has to pay so that they can park their
    car
    • parking lot = large area for parking
    • paved = a surface covered with hard material
    • permission = to be officially allowed to do something
    • police force = the police organization in a city or town
    • publicly = by the state or government
    • receive = get
    • rent = let someone use something for money
    • repair = to fix something when it is broken
    • responsible = in charge of
    • safety = keeping dangerous situations away
    • security area = place where passport and bags are examined
    • serve = to provide a place or area with something that is useful
    • service = here : examine an airplane to see if something is broken and
    repair it if necessary
    • share = use together
    • sidewalk = a hard surface for people to walk on
    • snow plough = a metal shield that you put in front of a truck or lorry to
    move snow away
    • spread = here: throw out
    • staff = the people who work there
    • suburb = part of a city that is far away from the center
    • taxiway = small road that an airplane moves on to get to the runway
    • unload = to take something off a plane or ship
    • various = different
    • visibility = how much or how far you can see, especially in bad weather
    • weapon = something that you use to fight with or attack someone, like a
    knife, gun or bomb
    • weigh = to check how heavy something is
    • x-ray = to photograph the inside of something
