SERVICE LETTER
NO. SL04-001
Rev. 1
DATE: 2-13-04

TO: Owners/Operators of Aircraft Equipped with MEGGITT Avionics S-TEC 01284/01298 Digital Flight Control
System (MAGIC 2100).
FROM: Director of Flight Engineering
SUBJECT: Use of Flight Director mode (FD) on the MEGGITT Avionics S-TEC 01284/01298 DFCS (MAGIC 2100).

A. Effectivity
MEGGITT Avionics S-TEC Autopilots, Model 01284/01298 DFCS (MAGIC 2100): STCs SA09527AC-D, SA09629AC,
SA09628AC, and SA09622AC

B. Reason
Owners/operators of the Magic 2100 have reported a problem with the Flight Director mode. It is possible that
when hand flying the FD, the Steering Bar may show a discrepancy in that it will indicate a pitch attitude
difference when the aircraft is flying on programmed indicated airspeed (IAS), vertical speed (VS) or altitude hold
(ALT HOLD).

C. Compliance
Information only. Compliance recommended.

D. Description
Field operators have indicated that when flying the flight director, they could cause an error indication in the pitch axis of
the steering bars. This was achieved in the following manner:
1. While flying a programmed speed (IAS), vertical speed (VS) or ALT HOLD, the pilot deviated sufficiently to
cause the steering bars to move indicating the proper direction to re-intercept the programmed IAS, VS or ALT
HOLD. This could also be done by programming the FD prior to takeoff for a VS or IAS
2. The pilot then returned directly to the programmed IAS, VS or ALT HOLD without trying to capture the Steering
Bar. In another case, the pilot selected FD and IAS/VS on the ground prior to takeoff. The pilot would then fly to
the selected IAS or VS without following the Steering Bar.
3. The Steering Bar would remain displaced even though the aircraft was back on target airspeed or vertical
speed.

E. Procedure
Meggitt S-TEC will be providing a fix for this condition. In the interim, the pilot should be aware of the problem. In the
event the Steering Bar is displaced while the aircraft is on target IAS, VS or ALT HOLD, the pilot has two options:

Go-Around PN 7723 1
1. Press the CWS button. This will synchronize the Steering Bar with the conditions the aircraft is flying at the time
of button press (best option).
2. Maneuver the aircraft to pickup the Steering Bar. Once the aircraft approaches the Steering Bar, it will return to
target airspeed or vertical speed. Care should be exercised not to endanger the aircraft by overspeed or
maneuvering close to the ground.
3. Do not engage the FD while on the ground.

F. Data
Not Affected.

G. Publication
Not Affected.
