SIGNIFICANCE OF INSULATION OIL

Application: Insulating Oil is a key component of many electrical Equipment's like Transformers,
Oil Filled Circuit Breakers, HV & MV Cable, Bushing, Capacitors etc.

Advantage : Oils that combine a high flashpoint with high dielectric strength have long been
used as an insulating medium in transformers, switchgear and other electrical apparatus.

There are currently five different types of insulating fluid in common use.
These are:
• Mineral oil (Widely used In most of Transformer)
• High molecular weight hydrocarbon (HMWH) fluids
• Silicon fluids
• Synthetic ester fluids
• Natural ester (vegetable oil) fluids

OIL BREAKDOWN VOLTAGE TEST

Dielectric strength is also known as breakdown voltage(BDV)

It is a measure of the electrical stress that an insulating oil can
withstand without breakdown.

A sample of oil is taken and voltage is applied across the two

electrodes immersed in it.
The voltage at which the sparking occurs between two electrodes
is known as breakdown voltage.
Low value of BDV indicates presence of moisture content and
conducting substances in the oil.
For measuring BDV of transformer oil, portable BDV measuring kit
is used
It is a relatively quick and easy way of determining the amount of
contamination in insulating oil.
