Reggae
Reggae is a Jamaican musical styles that was strongly influenced by
the island’s traditional mento music, as well as by calypso, African
music, American jazz, and rhythm and blues. One of reggae’s most
distinctive qualities is its offbeat rhythm and staccato chords.

Salsa
Salsa music is Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Colombian dance music. It
comprises various musical genres including the Cuban son montuno,
guaracha, chachacha, mambo, and bolero.

Samba
Samba is a Brazilian musical genre and dance style. Its roots can be
traced to Africa via the West African slave trade and African religious
traditions particularly in Angola and the Congo. Samba is the basic
underlying rhythm that typifies most Brazilian music. It has a lively and
rhythmical beat with three steps to every bar, making the samba feel
like a timed dance. There is a set of dances – rather than a single dance
– that define the samba dancing scene in Brazil. Thus, no dance can be
claimed with certainty as the“original” samba style.

Soca
Soca is also known as the “soul of calypso.” It originated as a fusion
of calypso with Indian rhythms, thus combining the musical traditions of
the two major ethnic groups of Trinidad and Tobago. It is a modern
Trinidadian and Tobagonian pop music combining soul and calypso
music.

word for “party”. It originated in the Carribbean Islands of Guadaloupe
and Martinique and was popularized in the 1980s. It has a pulsating
beat supplied by the gwo ka and tambour bele drums, a tibwa
rhythmic pattern played on the rim of the snare drums, a rhythm
guitar,a horn sections, and keyboard synthesize.

Latin American Music

As you have previously learned, Latin American music is influenced
by indigenous, Spanish-Portuguese, and African music.

Even before the arrival of Spanish, Portuguese and other European

colonizers, American natives already had their own local musical sources
like the maracas (gourd-shaped rhythm instrument), zampoňa (pan pipe),
and quena (notched –end flute). Materials for indigenous music instruments
ranged from hollow tree trunks, animal skin, animal shells, to human bones.

Popular Latin American music include the samba, son, and the salsa.
Latin American music also covers the vocal-dance forms. This include the
cumbia (Panama and Columbia), tango, cha cha (Cuban ballroom), rumba
(Afro-Cuban), bossa nova (Brazil), reggae (Jamaica), foxtrot (USA), and paso
doble (Spain).
The Mariachi is another example of a Latin American musical band
popular in Mexico. It original ensemble consisted of violins, guitars, harp,
guitarron (acoustic bass guitar).

Digital photography is a photography that uses digital cameras to
capture images. A digital camera or any device with a built-in camera like your
mobile phone, android device or tablet is used with an array of electronic photo
detectors to capture the image focused by the lens. The image captured is
digitized and stored as a file ready for digital processing, viewing or printing.

Photography is the art of creating images by recording light or

electronically by means of an image sensor or light sensitive material like
photographic film.

Digital camera is a camera that stores the photos and videos it takes in
an electronic format instead of a film (e.g. Non Single Lens Reflex SLR or
compact camera, Digital Single Lens Reflex DSLR camera).

In 1975, the first self-contained (portable) digital camera was created by Steve
Sasson of Eastman Kodak. Sasson’s camera used Charged-Coupled Device CCD
image sensor chips developed by Fairchild Semiconductor in 1973, that uses a
Charged-Coupled Device CCD image sensor, stored digital pictures and directly
connected to a computer for downloading images.

Basic Tips for Taking Good Photographs

Whether you are using a point-and-shoot camera, Digital Single Lens

Reflex (DSLR) or a device with a built-in camera, like your mobile phone, android
device or tablet, there are basic guidelines or tips for capturing a good quality
photographic image:

1. Choose a good location- An interesting location can sometimes make the

difference between a good and great photos.

2. Check that the available background is relatively simple and not too ruckus so
that the focus will be on your chosen subject.

3. Natural light in the outdoors or near a window is usually the most effective for
any kind of the subject. Ideally, the best light for photos is within the first
hour after sunrise and the last hour before the sunset.

4. Avoid taking shots facing the light, as this would make your subject back-lit
and most of the details would be lost in a shadow.

5. If you intend to take a posed shot, position your subject where you want in
relation to the location, background and source of light.

6. If you intend to take a candid shot, position yourself where you can capture
the most interesting, amusing, touching or engaging moment or expression.
7. Take a variety of shots- ranging from far shots showing the surroundings, to
medium-distance shots concentrating on the main subject, to tight or close-up
shots that focus on details of the subject. You can then choose from among all
of these, the best photos.

Health Trends, Issues, and Concerns

In the previous module, you have learned the different health laws
related to consumer health. The Consumer Act of the Philippines (RA 7394)
that protect the interest of the consumer, promote his/her general welfare,
establish standards of conduct for business and industry. TAMA or
Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act of 1997 (RA 8423)

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH
Another pressing health issue that concerns you as an adolescent is
reproductive health. “Reproductive health is defined as a state of physical,
mental, and social well-being in all matters relating to the reproductive
system, at all stages of life” (Galvez Tan, et al.,2009). With the sudden
physical and emotional changes in your body, more and more questions are
starting to surface. Reproductive health is crucial for its paves the way for
social and economic development. Furthermore, it has also a great influence
in the health of the next generation. The health of newborn children will be
dependent on the health of the parents, particularly the mother.

To aid the reproductive health needs of the citizens, the government

mandated the RA 10354 or the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive
Health Act. Here are the four pillars of foundation:
1. Informed choice
2. Respect for life
3. Birth control
4. Responsible parenthood

Reproductive health also concerns problems psuch as sexually-

transmitted infections. According to Dr. Natividad (2013), in the
Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study of 2013(YAFS-4), a survey of
Filipino college high school graduate
-36. 2% and 43.5% respectively admitted to having engaged in
premarital sex.
-66.7% and 79.6% did not use any protection at first premarital sex.

What is premarital sex?

“Premarital sex” means sexual intercourse before marriage, whether
marriage with that sexual partner or anyone else. These scenarios are most
often the cause of infections.

What is AIDS? What is HIV?

A-cquired H-uman

D-eficiency V-irus
S-yndrome

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks cells that help
the body fight infection, making a person more vulnerable to other infections
and diseases. It is spread by contact with certain bodily fluids of a person
with HIV, most commonly during unprotected sex (sex without a condom or
HIV medicine to prevent or treat HIV), or through sharing injection drug
equipment.

AIDS is the late stage of HIV infection that occurs when the body’s immune
system is badly damaged because of the virus.

In this light, the government also puts its effort to eradicate these sex-
related diseases, most especially AIDS. To prevent and control this the
Philippine AIDS Prevention and Control Act or RA 8504 was created.

SOCIAL HEALTH
Peer influence also concerns you as adolescents. You are in the
developmental stage wherein you build lasting relationships with peers.
Here are some issues that you may encounter:

1. Cybercrime
With the advancement of technology, there are various problems where
you may express yourself. This diversity may do both good and harm to you.
Cybercrime is defined as a crime where a computer is the object of the crime
or is used as a tool to commit an offense. To protect the citizens from this
concern, the government mandated RA 10175 or the Cybercrime *prevention
Act of 2012.

2. Child Pornography
In relation to cybercrime, child pornography has become a pressing
concern to generation. “Child pornography” refers to any representation,
whether visual, audio, or written combination thereof, by electronic,
mechanical, digital, optical, magnetic, or any other means, of child
engaged or involved in real or simulated explicit sexual activities” (Official
Gazette, 2009)
“Child” refers to a person below 18 years of age or over, but is unable
to fully take care of himself/herself from abuse, neglect, cruelty,
exploitation or discrimination because of a physical or mental disability
or condition.

3. Hazing
Fraternities and sororities, gangs, and social groups are starting to
become more and more identified and publicized. Because of their
“alleged” prestige and prime, more teens are encouraged to be a part of
them. For some of these groups, hazing may be an option to test an
“applicants” willingness and commitment. On the other hand, hazing is
very dangerous, and proven to have killed many lives. RA 8949 was
created to protect the youth.

4. Blood Donation
Being protective citizens of the country, you must willingly help other
in ways that will not harm you.
SAFETY IN THE EVIRONMENT
Pollution and road safety are two of the most usual issues that
concern you as a member of your community.
1. Pollution
With the exponential growth in population, more resources are being
demanded and supplied to the people. However, people do not manage
these resources properly. Thus, pollution arises. That is why the
government mandated RA 9512 or the National Environmental
Awareness and Education.

2. Road Safety
Road accidents are one of the most frequent causes of death among
Filipinos. To respond to this alarming situation, citizens are protected by
law through the Republic Acts. Seat Belt Use Act this policy includes the
mandatory wearing of seatbelts by he driver and front seat passengers oy
any running motor vehicle. The Act also prohibits children in the front
seat of any motor vehicle. Driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal
drug is not allowed.
