CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction

Electricity has been a key factor in the development of inventions that are

essential to everyone's daily existence. The majority of people today use appliances such

as for lighting and cooling, which are most frequently generated by electricity, and also

the availability of modern technology or electricity-powered equipment has made it

possible for people to manage their days with a simple plan. Although there are many

uses for electricity, its high cost has affected every household's consumption budget. Now

that the weather conditions become more drastic such as droughts, people consume more

electricity for cooling, which causes a heightened amount of electricity demand.

According to Isaac et al. (2020), the creation, transmission, and distribution of

electrical energy are still time-consuming and expensive processes. The stability of the

power system necessities is a constant balance of production and consumption. However,

it is not economically storable. In addition, having access to some electrical appliances

that we use in our daily lives allows an individual’s existence easier, brings comfort, and

saves time. This illustrates the significance of electricity in these technologies, urging

action to utilize it and the resources required because having access to power does not

automatically imply that it is cost-free.

Most industrial electric motors use-phase cost, namely the consumed electrical

energy, which far outweighs their overall life-cycle cost. Almost 70% of all industrial

electricity is used by electric motors, which offer appealing prospects to conserve a

significant amount of electricity in an affordable manner and help slow down climate
change (de Almeida, 2008). About one-third of the electricity used is for electric motor

systems. Electric motors are particularly appealing for the implementation of efficiency

improvements due to their widespread use. Although there are many different types of

electric motors on the market, three-phase, squirrel-cage induction motors (IMs) make up

the great bulk of the market for electric motors (de Almeida et al., 2010).

The high demand for fossil fuels drives many individuals to try and search for

substitution to work on free energy or renewable energy for the reason that they believed

in Faraday's Law, which states that as the magnetic force or magnetic field varies with

time, the electromotive force is created (Fitzpatrick,2007)namely, the technique of the

demonstrations of the conversion of wind kinetic energy into mechanical power, in which

the generator is mounted on a vehicle and subjected to turbulent wind, moving the shaft

to generate electricity. As a result of this concept, they concluded that creating new

technologies and implicit energy is free, but only when we no longer have to pay for its

production (David, 2017). In addition to that, magnets cannot produce electricity

independently. While on the other side, Magnets can be utilized to create energy.

According to Jones (2019), electromagnetic induction or also known as Faradays Law in

which the relation between electricity and magnetism in producing an electrical current

discovered by Michael Faraday in 1831, is a method of producing an electric current

using a magnetic field. It happens when a magnetic field and an electric conductor move

relative to one another, causing the conductor to cross magnetic field lines of force.

According to the study by David (2017), most electricity generated uses Faraday’s

Law which is electromagnetic induction, but in this study, the researcher used the wind to

generate power that continuously passes through the blades of the fan, causing it to rotate
and generate electricity, thus in this study conducted, the wind is not necessary to

generate electricity. In addition, in the study of Deshmukh (2017), in order to create

electricity, magnets are positioned around the copper winding of the fans rod, this process

is carried out only while the fan is operating. Although the fan can generate electricity it

still needs support from the main source of electricity to rotate and store electricity. Also,

in the study of Papan Das (2022), a fan may be utilized as a generator, to do this, use the

magnets inside the fans motor turn the fan into a generator that produces electrical

energy. Harnessing the use of the fan to generate electricity is one of the objectives of this

study, with the possibility that low-consumption devices can be powered by this energy.

In this study, the recycled electric fan motor will be harnessed. Two motors

specifically, will serve as the two channels and support each other to function. Using

Faraday’s Law, “Electromagnetic Induction" will be used as the base for generating

Electricity, while the two fans are operating that may be utilized for a variety of purposes,

including lighting, and charging various equipment that needs electricity. According to

Brain (2023), electric motors are everywhere, and they use magnets. Typically, electric

fan motors are commonly found in household appliances such as fans, air conditioning

units, and refrigerators. As a result, the neodymium type of magnet will be used for

storing the electricity generated by the motors. That is why electric fan motors will be

tested, if they can effectively generate electricity and should be considered as part of a

broader strategy for addressing energy and environmental strategies.

Although there are studies that have been conducted about generators that use

electric fan motors and magnets, there are no studies yet that used electric fan motor and

neodymium magnet to generate electricity. Most of the studies conducted uses wind
power in order to generate electricity whenever the wind passes through the wind of the

fan (David, 2017). In addition, some studies that uses magnets in order to generate

electricity still needs support from the main source of electricity to help the fan to rotate

and store or generate electricity (Deshmukh, 2017). Therefore, this study will focus

specifically to generate electricity using the recycled electric fan motor and the

neodymium magnet in order to generate electricity.

This experimental research is important and will help a lot of people, since this

study aims to generate electricity for those who are in need. It would help people who

cannot afford electricity, some places that are prone to brownouts, and those who have

shortages of electricity, etc. This study also aims to help reduce electricity consumption in

order to save money since electricity bills are quite costly nowadays.

Objectives of the Study

The general objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of utilizing a

magnet and recycled electric fan motor to generate electricity.

Specifically, this study aims to:

 Harnessing the use of the recycled electric fan motors to generate electricity.

 Identify the average energy consumption using the electric fan motor in terms of;

a. voltage; and

b. wattage; and
c. current

Significance of the Study

This following group of people will be the future beneficiaries of this study:

Electric Consumers. This study will be beneficial to all electric consumers who

have an issue paying electricity bills of such huge amounts. This study can contribute to

the community especially to the places with no electricity particularly in places that are

prone to brownouts. The fact that there are still some places with no electricity such as in

the mountains, other provinces, and barangay, etc.

Innovators. This study will be beneficial to innovators in order to improve and

develop new devices. In addition, this will also contribute to the advancement of

technologies in the future.

Future Researchers. Future researchers may use this work as reference for future

studies.

Scope and Limitation

The general intent of this study is to utilize recycled electric fan motor,

specifically a stand fan, with the help of a newly purchased neodymium magnet that will

serve as one of the supporters in storing and generating electricity. Two electric fan

motors will be harnessed that will serve as machines and generators that will support each

other in generating electricity. The researcher will focus on the result of how much

energy it can provide to power some electrical devices such as light bulbs, power banks,
and laptops. This study will also be focused on lessening the need for the production of

energy and finding ways to help the electric consumer. In addition, this study will be

conducted in local areas that are prone to power outages, specifically in the municipality

of Midsayap located at Upper Glad 1, Midsayap, North Cotabato.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

A review of various study concepts was given in this chapter. It summarized

relevant readings, papers, and research findings. This area of relevant literature includes

Dynamo, Neodymium Magnets, Electromotive Force, Demand of Electricity, Conceptual

Framework, and Definition of Terms.

Motor

A motor is a device that provides power that is also commonly used in supporting

engines in vehicles. They are used to preserve a vehicle's efficiency or other devices with

moving parts. The word motor was from the Classical Latin word “movere’’ which means

to move (Jensen, 2013). According to Hitchins (2017), the invention of the motor was

introduced in the 1740s by the efforts of Andrew Gordon. Additional advancements were

achieved when Michael Faraday and Joseph Henry conducted research on the

electromagnetic field and determined the method of converting electrical energy into

mechanical energy. A Faraday’s Law, conceptualized by Michael Faraday, serves as the

foundation for transformers, electric motors, generators, and other devices that are

utilized to operate various machines, from heavy-duty industrial equipment to everyday

household appliances.

According to the study by Patil, et al. (2021) using the concept of wind turbines,

wind-generated electricity, can help alleviate the problem of the scarcity of energy, which

has become one of the biggest challenges, especially for some electrical consumers.
Aside from using Fans for cooling purposes, the fan will be converted into a generator,

instead of using electricity to make wind, like a typical household fan, wind turbines use

the wind to make electricity with the help of Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction

where it uses a magnetic field in generating electricity.

Gadkar et al. (2014) have shown the method of generating power by a ceiling fan

which believed that exploiting the amount of power from its motor is sufficient in

converting mechanical energy to electrical energy. The motor’s rotating energy may be

utilized to power a variety of tiny, powered devices, like lighting a bulb, charging mobile

phones and laptops, etc.

Neodymium Magnet

According to the study conducted by Adoghe (2017), home users and some

resident individuals have begun to use alternative energy to meet their energy needs

Neodymium magnets had been developed since 1982. Furthermore, it is also referred to

as NdFeB, NIB, or Neo magnets because of alloy of neodymium, iron, and boron to form

the NdFeB structure. According to the study, this product's high energy and physical

properties make it suitable to be used in many applications such as motors, hard discs,

medical equipment, and other electrical devices.

In addition, it is easy to magnetize and form a magnetic field itself, which the

efficiency of using this neodymium magnet in supporting and storing the energy from the

motor has a great advantage because, just like in other generators, The stronger its

magnetic, the higher output of current or voltage will produce in generating electric
current to power an electrical device. This "free energy" source operates without

requiring an external power source, making it mechanically efficient. Furthermore, its

durability enables the rotor to rotate continuously for a considerable duration, (Adoghe,

2017).

According to Hidayat (2021), with the help of magnets, has been advantageous in

creating renewable and alternative energy in several ways that keep on providing

affordable sustainability that has been considered a good option for generating electricity.

In addition, a popular design was created, by John Bedini in which a device consists of

two batteries. A study about magnetic repulsion in which new ways of generating

electrical energy with the help of magnets in which a study conducted regarding the

performance between 4 pole neodymium Bedini SSG magnets. This study shows that 4-

pole Neodymium magnets produce better performances.

Electromotive Force

When connected to a circuit, all of the devices will generate a potential difference

and produce current. One of the numerous forces that operate on things is the

electromotive force. According to Hai et al. (2009), when connected to a circuit, all of the

devices will generate a potential difference and produce current. For the conduction of a

current flow, we need to have a component of a source. One of the numerous forces that

operate on things is the electromotive force. The Electromotive force is produced when

the flow of an electron moves through a circuit; the force serves on the charge will

increase the electron's energy.

Terminal voltages in electromotive force (back EMF) zero crossing initiate

procedure depends on unrelated of line voltages sustained of the terminals of the motor.

The dissimilar of the voltage line imparted by the reinforced version of a suitable back

electromotive force in its zero crossing. Procure with lack of motor neutral voltage from

the commutation signals (Damodharan & Vasudevan, 2012).

According to Shakouhi et al. (2013), in processing a comprehensive way of on

controlling motor, the widely accepted element is the electromotive force (EMF) that is

also a controller that inserts the rectangular phase current that instruct the system of

approach of the plan of action to produce the appropriate demand of constant torque. In

addition to this, electromotive force (EMF) also operates the commutation torque ripple

reduction.

Demand of Electricity

According to Alnasir and Kazerani (2013), concerns about the long-term

accessibility of endless magnetic materials and their collision with the future of endless

magnet concurrent generators are conducted. Maintaining a cost and efficiency sense, the

viability of an indirect-drive squirrel cell installation generator for stand-alone wind

power inducement methods is discussed. As an efficient induction machine design, a

permanent magnet induction generator is also examined. Yet, their capability of operating

exchanged reticence devices, as a generator, occurs in a direct-drive wind turbine system

that is examined.

In addition, according to Wolfram (2005), over the past few years in US electric

utilities faced significant changes to their competitive and regulatory environment which
is also a cause of high electricity consumption. The study shows the efficiency of using

electricity generators in United States, so the industry recon structuring serves as a design

to enhance economic efficiency in all operations.

Furthermore, according to the study of Moon et al. (2018), the increasing demand

of electricity has placed a huge burden to electricity generators and power grid, due to

this; they analyzed the consumers charging patterns to accurately determine their

demands for electricity.

With the enhancement of fan structure, it provides huge potential for energy

efficiency. The most remarkable is the with the usage of motor, that able to decrease the

power consumption in 50%. The system paired with IoT-based controllers that produced

smart products that actuate in the future to lead the purpose of autonomous control and

power consumption, (Khan et al., 2021). In addition to this, electric motor transform

electricity to mechanical energy, equipping the energy of power for machinery, (Manney,

2017).
