ABSTRACT

This study intents to find out whether the impacts of violent cartoons on
the behavior of children are positive or negative. The data for this paper are
gathered by interviewing parents that have children aging 3-9 years old the
data gathered has shown that violent cartoons especially the one similar to
Tom and Jerry and Oggy & the Cockroaches have a negative effect on
children. Since they tend to imitate the bad behaviors of the cartoon
characters, we have come to a conclusion that children should not be
allowed to frequently watch violent cartoons and the parents should place a
limit on how long children should be allowed in front of the television.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Cartoons have been a part of the lives of children all over the world. It has various

impacts on a children behavior, speech, how they interact and how they act. This study

aims to specifically investigate the impacts of cartoons, towards the behavior of young

children. Since there are both educational cartoons and violent cartoons. We want to

find out, specifically, what impacts can violent cartoons have on the way children

behave.

According to Krishnaja s. (2022) children grow by observing and experiencing their

environments. Television has become one of the most influential mediums in the lives

of the children. The child is exposed to a wide range of programs relating to nature,

entertainment, comics, films, television shows, advertisements and so on.

This exposure to a wide range of programs has both a positive and negative effect on

child behavior. According to Anisha Nair (2019) here are the positive effects of cartoons

on children; first, it helps children get an early start on learning and intellectual

development. Second, it helps children relieve stress and makes them happy. Cartoons

have provided an opportunity for children to be both entertained and learn about

different things.

Meanwhile Irena Canji (2020) stated that cartoons can be bad for kids if left

unsupervised. It’s influence can lead a child to doubt or go against the teachings they

acquired from their parents. The shows they watch can expose them to aggressive

characters that children may imitate. This cartoons can influence kids to change their

previous positive behavior to a negative one.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to find out the impact of violent cartoon shows on the behavior of

children.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following:

1. What are the violent cartoon shows often patronized by the subjects?

2. How does watching violent cartoon shows affect a child’s behavior

a. Towards his/her playmates

b. Towards his/her parents

3. How do these children behave if they are not allowed to watch their favorite

cartoon shows?

4. Is there a difference in the behavior of the subjects before their exposure to the

cartoons shows and after their exposure to them?

Significance of the Study

The result of this study will be of benefit to the following:

Policy makers: This result of this study will be used as guide in crafting
relevant laws that could safeguard the children. Curriculum Implementors may
have activities that can help children to avoid focusing on the cellphone screen
like; helping in the kitchen, reading books, draw or painting and picnic.

Parents: They will know how harmful the violent cartoons are to their children.
In this study the parents can be aware on things that violent cartoons can do to
their children.

Future Researcher: They can get some information that might be helpful in
their research and some of their question may possibly be answered by this
research.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This general intent of this study is to know the impacts of violent cartoons
towards the behavior of the children with the focus of finding out whether the
impacts are positive or negative.

This study will mainly identify the various effects of cartoons towards children
and find out the reactions of children towards being limited in watching cartoons.

This study will include three parents who have children aging 3-9 years old.

This paper will be conducted within Bago City and only targeted towards
parents/siblings or people looking after children with ages 3-9 years old.

Cognitive Development.Is defined by Wikipedia as a field of study in neuroscience and psychology

focusing on a child’s development in terms of information, processing, conceptual resources, perceptual
skill and language learning.

Desentization.Is defined by Wikipedia as a treatment or process that diminishes after repeated exposure.

Imitate.Is defined by Merriam Webster’s Dictionary as a term meaning to follow as a pattern, model or an
example.

Influence.Is defined by Oxford Languages as the capacity to have an effect on the character,
development or behavior of someone or something.

Intellectual Development.Is defined by Encyclopedia.com as the changes that occur as a result of growth
and experience in a person’s capacities for thinking, reasoning, relating, judging, conceptualizing, etc. In
particular it concerns such changes in children.

Meduims.Is defined by Merriam Webster Dictionary as a channel or system of communication,

information, or entertainment.

Patronized.Is defined by Cambridge Dictionary as a term meaning to be a regular customer of a store or

restaurant, etc. In our research paper this term means as “a regular viewer.

Phenomological.Is defined by as a form of qualitative research that focuses on the study of an individual’s
lived experiences with the world.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Overview/Introduction of the Review of Related Literature

According to the study “The Influence of Cartoons on Kids” by Irena Canji

(2020) that children have the tendency to choose a cartoon character that they will

imitate the concern is that the children might follow both bad and good behavior from

the cartoon character. She identified both the positive and negative effect of this

cartoons to the children’s behavior; positive effect is mainly that children can have an

early start to language and thinking development meanwhile negative effect is that

children might be influenced by a bad character that can cause them to change to a

negative attitude.

In the article “Positive and Negative Effects of Cartoons on Child Behavior

and Development” by Anisha Nair (2019) listed down both positive and negative effects.

Positive effects are; cartoons can help kids get an early start on learning, helps in both

cognitive and language development, enhance creativity and relieve stress. While

negative effects on the otherhand are; cartoons encourage violence, unruly behavior,

use of foul language and promote bad role models.

According to the study “Impact of Violent Cartoons on the Behavior of

Children: A case of South Punjab” by Tahir Mahmood, Urwah Iftikhar, and Ahsan Bhatti

(June 2020). Children often draw strong social or anti-social ideas from children’s

movies and cartoons. Television is the most popular medium in which the children are

exposed.

In their article “Effects of Cartoon Violence on Aggressive Thoughts and

Aggressive Behaviors” Qian Zhang, Yi Gao, JingYa Gao, Xiong Yang, Detlef H. Rost,

Gang Cheng, ZhaoJun Jeng, Dorothly L. Espalage. This article reports on an

experiment designed to test whether the cartoon manipulation leads to significant

increases in aggressive behaviors among Chinese Children.

According to the study “Parents Perceptions of Influence of Violent Cartoons

on Primary School Pupils Social Behaviors” by Sopekan, Alade, Ignatius, Uchechukwo

(2020). These include their day by day experiences of which their parents play a

significant role.

In the article “Animation Movies: Impact on Children, Positive and Negative”

by Krishnajas (2020), he children’s mental health is closely influenced by their

environment. Television has become one of the most influential mediums in the lives of

children. Children are constantly exposed to a wide range of programs with various

topics that have both positive ang negative impacts.

In the article “Impact of Cartoon Programs on Children’s Language and

Behavior” authorized by; Ghilzai, Alam, Ahmad, Shaukat (2017), it is stated that most

children watch cartoons for fun (41%); action (23%) and learnings (17%). Children

mostly imitate the actions and behavior of the characters and exhibit it towards their

siblings and peers.

According to the study “Impacts of Child Cartoons Programs on Children” by

Firdous (2017). The present of the study also shows the reaction of the children who

watch cartoons more that usual cartoons now a day have an intentional effect on

children. Children tend to take in a lot of information from cartoons, some of the parents

were found to be unaware of the harmful content their children are exposed to. Some of

the cartoons should be shown to the children in strict parental guidance. Parental

guidance is term in which some of the parents seem to be entirely unaware of. Most of

the guidance were of the view that the cartoons are inducing violent behavior in their

kids. But some were in favor of theme.

According to the study “Effect of Violent Cartoons on Children’s Behavior and

Mental State’’ by Anita Ramesh ( August 17, 2021). Violent cartoons can lead to

aggression, fear, desensitization, lack of empathy, internalization of inappropriate role

model and antisocial behavior. A violent show can increase the likelihood of a child

behaving aggressively and also make him/her more susceptible to feeling afraid of dark

or lonely spaces, among other negative effect. Cartoons often encourage unhealthy

behavior such as violence, sexual behavior, taking justice into one’s own hands,

stereotyping and inappropriate ways of handing conflicts. Watching cartoons without

critically evaluating them can lead to adopting the unhelpful attitudes and tendencies

they promote. Children may not be able to differentiate between advertisement and

programs. This makes them believe the claims of the advertisers. They may feel that

they are being deprived if their parents do not buy a certain product.

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, research type, instrument and the
data gathering procedures employed in this phenomological study.

Research Design
This qualitative research uses phenomological research design to gather
data. This approach will provide a complete understanding of the impacts of violent
cartoons towards children.
We conducted the interview with 3 respondents that are parents with children
aging 3-9 years old. All three respondents are female and the biological mother of the
kids. The interview was recorded by taking a video and writing down notes.

Research Instrument
The interviews are conducted to find out the changes in the behavior of
children caused by violent cartoons. The responds of the respondents are translated
and interpreted to gather data. Finally, the data were analyzed, summarized and
concluded to answer the research questions.

CHAPTER 4
RESULT AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents the data gathered and discussion. It is shown here the
impacts watching of violent cartoons towards children with ages 3-9 years old. All the
data gathered will provide this study reliable and relevant information for the readers. By
analyzing the results, the researches will be able to identify whether the impacts of
cartoons towards children are positive or negative. The table below properly presents
the responses and its translations, the number of respondents and the interpretation of
the respondents answers.

CHAPTER 5
SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the result of the study, the following are the summarized conclusions and
recommendations;

1. According to parents, the impacts of watching violets cartoons have caused their
children to become more talkative, hyperactive.
2. The violent cartoons that most kids watch are; Tom and Jerry, Peppa Pig, and
The Oggy & the Cockroaches.
3. Based on the interview, most parents that have kids watching cartoons like Tom
and Jerry, think that violent cartoons have a negative effects on kids since they
imitate the violent actions of the characters and learning bad habits.
4. According to parent with a kid that watches Peppa Pig, there are positive effects,
like the thinking skills of their kids becoming advance and they can easily catch
up on lessons.
5. It was discovered that children have become too captivated with cartoons that
when parents try to stop them, the kids would complain, throw tantrum and try
hide under blankets in order to secretly watch cartoons.
6. Parents expressed that their kids, who were quiet or well behaved have now
been influenced by cartoons to become hyper and mischievous.
7. It also important that kids spend time playing outside and be active instead of
staying in front of the television for long hours.
8. It is recommended that when watching cartoons, it is important for parents to
place a limit for their children, around 20min-2hours, so that the effects of
radiation wont be excessive to the eyes of the kids.
