1.2 Enabling Technologies for IR 4.0

These enabling technologies bring a new dimension to the industrial environment,
resulting in a dramatic increase in industrial productivity. The digitalisation of the
production-based industries are driven by these technological drivers.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE is a concept that is made up of numerous subfields such
as machine learning, which focuses on the development of programs that can teach
themselves to learn, understand, reason, plan and act when exposed to new data in the
right quantities

Increasingly BIG DATA techniques are being applied in manufacturing industry to improve
customer experience and product quality, realise energy efficiency and conduct predictive
maintenance. It is now possible to collect masses of data from several different sources
to direct decisions that anticipate product or equipment failure.

While many engineers are already familiar with SIMULATIONS in the field of product
design, the advent of augmented reality, AI and big data is expected to take simulations
to the next level.

AUGMENTED REALITY- some of the first applications can be found in the delivery of
information and training, for instance augmented reality can be used to deliver part
replacement instructions to maintenance staff in the field.

INTERNET of THINGS (IoT) Industry 4.0 technologies embody an unprecedented

proliferation of sensors and connectedness among these sensors. Combined with other
technologies such as AI and big data, it is now possible to envisage entirely autonomous
systems that revolutionise manufacturing.

• The manufacturing systems would become fully integrated and automated as

a result of digital adoption that will transform the industrial environment.
Enabling technologies offer numerous advantages across various industries
and fields of human endeavour. These technologies serve as catalysts for
innovation and transformation, leading to improved processes, products, and
services. Here are some key advantages of enabling technologies:

Enhanced Efficiency

o Enabling technologies often automate repetitive tasks, streamline

processes, and optimize resource utilization. This results in increased
operational efficiency and cost savings.

Increased Productivity
o By automating tasks and providing tools for better decision-making,
enabling technologies help individuals and organizations accomplish
more in less time, boosting overall productivity.
Innovation and Creativity
o Enabling technologies open up new possibilities for innovation and
creativity. They enable individuals and businesses to explore novel ideas
and solutions.

Safety and Security

o Enabling technologies enhance safety and security in various sectors,

including transportation, defence, and cybersecurity.

User Empowerment
o Enabling technologies often empower individuals to take control of their
lives, make informed decisions, and have access to resources and
opportunities.

Overall, enabling technologies have a profound impact on society, the

economy, and individual lives by fostering progress, innovation, and positive
change.
