MULTI-ENGINE INSTRUMENT RATING – AEROPLANE

Privileges:
Adds the privilege of flying a multi-engine aeroplane under instrument meteorological conditions (IFR flight
rules) to the Private or Commercial Pilot Licence.

Flight Training:
An applicant must have completed a minimum of:
• 50 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot-in-command in an aeroplane, of which 10 hours must
be in the appropriate category (Group 1).
• 40 hours of instrument time, of which a maximum of 20 hours may be instrument ground time.
- 5 hours of dual instrument flight time acquired from holder of a flight instructor rating.
- 5 hours in a multi-engine aeroplane.
- 15 hours of dual instrument flight time provided by a qualified person.
- One dual cross-country flight of no less than 100nm under simulated or actual IMC
conditions (flight to be conducted in accordance with an IFR flight plan which includes at
least two different locations and an instrument approach to minima).

Medical Fitness:
An applicant shall hold a valid category 3 or category 1 medical certificate.

Ground School Training:


An applicant applying for the Multi-Engine Instrument Rating does not require an approved ground school,
however, to meet the Transport Canada knowledge requirements it is highly recommended that the student
enroll in an Instrument Ground School. Our Ground School consists of a series of lectures aimed at fully
preparing the student for not only Transport Canada examinations, but also a safe and satisfying time in the
IFR world.

Written Examination:
A Transport Canada written exam is required.
• You must obtain a minimum of 70%

Flight Test:
A flight test is required.

Course Enrollment:
Students may enroll at any time and commence flight training at their convenience; however, ground
school timetables will be established and published for varied times.

Enrollment Requirements:
Prerequisites: Have at minimum a valid Canadian Private Pilot Licence – Aeroplane

Age: An applicant must be at least 17 years of age.

Citizenship: An applicant must be a Canadian citizen, a landed immigrant, or a person admitted into
Canada to undertake flight training.

Language: An applicant must be able to read, write, and speak in English without assistance.

incidental costs such as the flight test fee, the licencing fee, etc. The following is a realistic cost breakdown
for this licence.

The above costs do not include HST where applicable.

*The Flight instruction costs above assume a student with a Commercial Pilot Licence with 20 hours of previous dual instrument flight time and
a multi-engine rating on a PA-23-250. The actual cost could vary with individual progress or needs.

The total cost need not be paid up front. Flying may be paid as you fly.
