 WORK PROCEDURE

 Ensure blocks are cured properly before use, block should be thoroughly soaked with
water before placing.

 Care shall be taken not to use blocks with broken edges and corners.

 Ensure that blocks having cracks are not to be used. The blocks shall have sound
edges.

 Clean up all foreign loose particles on the blocks.

 The blocks shall be tested in appropriate laboratories for compressive strength.

 Approved Damp Proof Course shall be provided below the first layer of block work.

 Proper hacking shall be done and rush coat applied to adjoining R.C.C.works.

 Use half piece for staggering the joints of the blockwork.

 Wherever required use grinders to cut pieces as per site requirement for the horizontal
pieces but not smaller than 10 cm.

 Use mechanical mixers for mixing the plafixx 510 dry mix mortar for the blockwork. Add
20% water

 Horizontal or vertical reinforced stiffeners shall be provided whenever the block work
panels exceed 14 m2. Expanded stainless steel mesh joint reinforcement shall be
provided horizontally. For 200 mm wide blockwork, block reinforcement width shall be
110 mm.

 The blocks shall be laid to a maximum of 5 layers at a time in one day to allow the mortar
to set and provide rigidity.

 The uniformity of the joints shall be maintained by using 7mm wide spacer sticks.

 Care shall be taken to rake up the joints when the mortar is slightly dry.

 Ensure that the plumbness in verticality and the horizontal alignment is maintained at
every layer of the blockwork.

 The total nos. of layers of blockwork is adjusted with height of wall to be made and the
difference is adjusted by providing the same height of mortar below the first layer of
blockwork.

 After the blockwork is erected, clean the face of the blockwork from loose mortar, which
is falling from time to time.

 In general maintain a good line, level and neat work in accordance with the plan.

WORK & PLASTERING Page Page 7 of 11

 Ensure proper curing of the blockwork after the setting of the mortar.

 Horizontal reinforcement shall be provided as specified (drawings & specification) and in

the first and second courses of blockwork above and below openings and shall be
extended not less than 800 mm either side of the openings.

6.0 RENDER/PLASTER

 Before render/plaster can commence, a check must be made to ensure that the following
items are complete:

 Approvals of materials (blockwork accessories, including stainless steel fixing nails and
washers, mix design)

 Adequate illumination available in the area of work.

 Voids left after the removal of scaffolding have been filled in or half courses at the top of
blockwork panels been filled in.

 A key must be provided for the plaster/render i.e. joint raked back, concrete surfaces hacked
and rush coat with bonding agent on blockwork which is cured for 2 days before render/
plaster.

 Curing compound, protruding nails and duct tape must be removed from concrete elements.

 Joints in concrete works have been made smooth with a grinder.

 Metal laths provided at joints between blockwork and concrete and where conduits have
been embedded.

 Dabs are provided every 4 meters horizontally and every 3 vertically to ensure correct
thickness, level and verticality of render/plaster

 Completed adjacent surfaces must be protected to avoid mortar splashing.

 Mechanical mixer must be provided for mixing the mortar.

 Position of day joints agreed with client.

 Safe scaffolding with safe access and netting must be in place as per approved method
statement.

7.0 WORK EXECUTION

 WORK PROCEDURE

 Surface to be rendered/plastered must be sprayed with potable water for cleaning and curing
purposes.

 The proportion of mortar to be used shall be 1:6 (cement :sand)

 Render/plaster is mechanically mixed and transported to the work area by wheel barrow or
Trolley with properly covered and stored on plywood or clean tray.

 The render/plaster is applied in one 12 mm coat to the block/concrete surface by flicking the
material forcefully onto the surface with a steel trowel to ensure proper compaction.

 Levelling is achieved using a 4 m long aluminium box section run between 2 dabs.

 Final finishing is achieved using a steel float.

 The finished render/plaster is cured for a minimum of 5 days by spraying potable water.

8.0 HELTH AND SAFETY

Specific safety measures shall be implemented as per the Project Safety Plan.
a. The working area shall be barricaded with safety materials ( Safety Cones, soft
Barricades, warning tapes, safety sign boards, flickering lights, etc.) and fencing to
restrict unauthorized entry.
b. Execution of the above works shall conform to the Risk Assessment Analysis of this
method statement.
c. Full time Safety Officer shall be assigned to assess the site works and maintain records
of inspection conducted.
d. The following safety precautions will be exercised;
 Ensure that all workers related to this work shall have attended Safety Induction
and shall be provided with proper PPE.
 All Workers shall wear Coverall
 Implement “Permit to Work” system. No work shall proceed unless inspected by
client engineer.
 Conduct Daily Tool Box Meeting for mutual understanding of workers and record
attendance of attendees.
 Safety warning tapes and warning sign shall be provided as a barrier.
