1 Scope

This specification together with the purchase order and appropriate specification sheets
covers the minimum requirements for a caulking compound or joint sealant.

This compound is primarily intended for sealing or caulking of joints in buildings,

decks, etc., to prevent moisture entry. The joints are subjected to movements due to
temperature and stress differences in the concrete or steel, to high humidity atmosphere,
condensation, UV-rays and to occasional spills of hydrocarbon and lubricating oils.
Examples are deckplates of offshore platforms or workboats, structural joints in
buildings, joints between fireproofing concrete and vessel walls, joints between belly
bands and tank walls, etc.

2 Conflicts and Deviations

2.1 Any conflicts between this specification and other applicable Saudi Aramco
Materials System Specifications (SAMSSs), Engineering Standards (SAESs),
Standard Drawings (SASDs), or industry standards, codes, and forms shall be
resolved in writing by the Company or Buyer Representative through the
Manager, Consulting Services Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.

2.2 Direct all requests to deviate from this specification in writing to the Company or
Buyer Representative, who shall follow internal company procedure SAEP-302
and forward such requests to the Manager, Consulting Services Department of
Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.

4 Detailed Requirements

The compound shall be elastomeric, single or multi-component, non-sag, paintable, and

have good resistance to occasional hydrocarbon and lubricating oil spills. The
compound shall have zero moisture/vapor permeability, and have adequate resistance to
wind driven rain and atmospheric pollutants in concentrations found in hydrocarbon
processing facilities. The compound shall comply with one or more of the material
specifications referenced under Section 3, as modified or augmented in the following
paragraphs:

4.1 Technical Requirements

4.1.1 Condition in Container

The sealant, or the components of the sealant, shall show no curdling or

jelling in a freshly opened package, and shall be of good consistency to
allow - if necessary - thorough mixing to a homogeneous state, and easy
application. The containers shall not break when subjected to normal
shipping and handling.

4.1.2 Consistency

A ready mixed sealant shall have a consistency suitable for easy mixing
with a light hand held mixer and easy application by a manual or an air
operated gun in a temperature range of 5°C to 50°C.

4.2 Composition Requirements

The sealant shall be cured by chemical reaction of polymeric substances either

by the introduction of a reactive compound into the base component in the form
of a paste curing agent (two component sealant) or by the exclusion of air from

the sealant mass (one component anaerobic sealant) or by the diffusion of

atmospheric moisture into the sealant mass.

4.3 Primer

If required, Manufacturer's approved primer shall be provided with the sealant.

5 Packaging

Packaging shall be in accordance with Specification 09-SAMSS-060. Packaging shall

include Manufacturers Data Sheet(s) and Instruction(s).
