Test IV.:

1. Looking for:
A. The time it takes the ball to strike the ground.
B. The max height of the ball.
C. When the ball reaches max height.

The height of the ball is 0ft when it strikes the ground. We make time equal to height
by turning them both into 0s, this is needed to find time (t)

ℎ(𝑡) = −16𝑡 2 + 24𝑡 + 6

0 = −16𝑡 2 + 24𝑡 + 6 (as mentioned above this is how you make time and height
equal, by turning them into 0s.)

If you noticed, we turned it into a quadratic equation therefore in this step we use the
quadratic formula.

−𝑏 ± √𝑏2 − 4𝑎𝑐
2𝑎
−24 ± √24^2 − 4(−16)(6)
2(−16)

−24 ± √576 + 384

−32
√960
−24 ± 30.98

−24 + 30.98 = 6.98 / −32 = −0.22

−24 – 30 .98 = −54.98 / −32 = 1.72
T = 1.72 seconds or -0.22 (only include 1.72 seconds in the final since the time can’t be negative,
making -0.22 an extraneous solution).

A. What is the maximum height of the ball (k)

B. When does the ball reach its maximum height (h)
This can be solved like how we get the vertex of an equation in standard form.
Solving for h
𝑏
ℎ = − 2𝑎
−24
ℎ = − 2(−16)
−24
ℎ=−
−32
ℎ = 0.75
Solving for k
4𝑎𝑐 − 𝑏^2
4𝑎

4(−16)(6) − (24)^2
4(−16)
−384 − 576
−64
−960
−64
𝑘 = 15

The maximum height of the ball is 15 feet and it’ll take 0.75 seconds for it to reach its maximum
height.
