What Is It

Read the information sheets properly. Be aquainted with the different sewing tools and their
uses.
SEWING TOOLS AND THEIR USES:

A. MEASURING TOOLS
Measuring tools are instruments used for obtaining quantities, dimensions
or forces of real world objects. The following are the common measuring tools
used in sewing:

1. Tape Measure
A flexible measuring device used in taking body
Measurements. The front has the measurement of
150 centimeters and 60 inches onthe other side.
Fiber glass tape is commonly used by dressmakers.
2

2. Sewing Gauge
A small ruler with a sliding guide and is about
six
inches long. This gauge is used for measurements at
hem lines, button holes and areas where other small
measurements require checking, such as
pleats and tucks. The gauge is usually made of metal
or plastic.

3. Ruler
A ruler measuring 12 inches or even 18 inches, is
either clear or solid. It is a useful tool to have for
measuring and drawing straight seam lines and cutting
lines. It also aids in connecting lines. A clear ruler is also
a good tool for marking button holes.

4. Yardstick
A yardstick is made of smooth, shellacked hardwood
or metal. It is used for marking hemlines and checking
grainlines when laying out the pattern.
5. L-Square
The Tailor Square or "L-Square" is used to transfer
measurements to the draft pattern. It also divides the
garment into the desired measurement. It has perfect
squares and is useful in making straight lines and
numbers. It can also function as a tape measure. It has
two arms connected perpendicularly.
a.The longer arm is twenty-four (24) inches long.
b. The shorter arm is fourteen (14) inches long.

6. French Curve
This is used to shape the depth of the
neckhole
and armhole of the pattern.

B. DRAFTING TOOLS
These are instruments used for making pattern.

1. Drafting table -It is a wooden table used to draft the

pattern paper laid in the smooth and firm surface.

2. Hip curve- It is a curve stick made of metal or wood

calibrated on both sides used to form the hipline and
other areas of garments that need to be curved.
3

3. L-square
The tailor square or "L-Square" is used to transfer
measurements to the draft pattern. It also divides the
garment into the desired measurement. It has perfect
squares and is useful in making straight lines and
numbers. It can also function as a tape measure. It
has
two arms connected perpendicularly.
a.The longer arm is twenty-four (24) inches long.
b. The shorter arm is fourteen (14) inches long

4. French Curve
This is used to shape the depth of the neckhole
and armhole of the pattern.
APPLICATION (Differentiated Activities)

Now that you already know what are the measuring tools and drafting tools, try to answer
the activity below.

ACTIVITY 4: Tell Me (Developing Listening Skills) (English, MAPE & Values

integration)

Let us listen to the conversation among the members of the family, then answer
the questions that follow.
Riza and Jake are classmates. At the same time, they are cousin. Due to
Pandemic all members of the family are staying at home. Everytime they recieved
their modules they were answer it in group and usually is at Riza’s resident.
Riza’s father is a tailor’s man. Her mother had noticed that the two were talking
about their lessons. The lesson, they usually discuss is about the measuring tools
for sewing . The parents got interested to join the conversation for they believed that
have an idea about it. They asked each other. Let us listen to their conversation.

Father: Riza, what is the use of a tape measure?

Riza : Let me think first, Oh! I got it. The use of tape measure is to take
the body measurement.
Father : Wow! You got it right. I believed you kept on observing my work. What about
you Jake , do you have a question?
Jake : Okay! Well, my question is, what is the use of sewing gauge?
Father : Ah, your aunte has an idea of that because she will be using it when making
a skirt.
Mother: Yes, I know that. Sewing Gauge is a small ruler with a sliding guide and is
about six inches long. This gauge is used for measurements at hem lines,
button holes and areas where other small measurements require checking,
such as pleats and tucks. The gauge is usually made of metal or plastic.
Jake : Thumbs up! You are excellent.
Riza : Alright, let me see you Jake if you could answer this. What is the use of an
L-Square?
Jake : Wait a minute, I’m still thinking. Oh! I got it. The tailor’s square or "L-
Square"
is used to transfer measurements to the draft pattern. It also divides the
garment into the desired measurement. It has perfect squares and is useful
in making straight lines and numbers. It can also function as a tape
measure.
6
It has two arms connected perpendicularly.
a.The longer arm is twenty-four (24) inches long.
b. The shorter arm is fourteen (14) inches long.
Riza : Yes, you’re absolutely correct! You’re excellent too Jake.
Jake : Thank you. Shall we continue?
Riza : Yes. Go on Jake.
Jake : What particular tool is used to shape the depth of the neckhole and armhole
of the pattern?
Riza : Oh boy! Let me try. I think it is a French Curve.
Jake : You are definitely right, my dear cousin!
Riza : Father, I have seen you using the Hip curve, what is the use of that certain
tool?
Father: Oh Yeh! That Hip curve is a stick made of metal or wood calibrated on both sides
and is used to form the hipline and other areas of garments that need to be curved
like skirt and pants.
Riza: Oh! Wait, we forgot to wear our face mask.
Mother: Oh my! even though we are here at home we should always wear our
face mask. Do not stay closer with each other when answering your
modules.
Observe social distancing. Be sure to wash your hands after scanning your
modules or after doing anything. And by the way Riza, did you take your
vitamin this day?
Riza: Of course, mom.
Mother: Very good. What about you Jake?
Jake: I had taken too, auntie.
Mother: Very good. That’s the best way of maintaining the good health of our body
and to
build a strong resistance. Keep safe everyone. Avoid roaming around and do
not
be getting closer to a group of people. Do not forget to wash your hands after
scanning your modules or after doing anything. We’ll, lets end our
conversation
then, Bye Jake.
Jake : Bye everyone, see you tomorrow.
