PERFORMANCE STANDARD: The learner is able to conduct systematically a mini-research applying the different
statistical methods.The learner is able to formulate and solve problems involving
geometric figures on the rectangular coordinate plane with perseverance and
accuracy.
LEARNING COMPETENCY: Illustrates and Calculates the following measures of position: quartiles, deciles
and percentiles. Quarter 4
I – Objectives
At the end of the session, learners should be able to;
1.Recall the median and quartile formula of ungrouped data
2.Define quartiles based on the example given.
3.Derived the formula in solving quartiles.
4.Apply interpolation method
5.Compare and relate deciles from quartiles
6.Create their own real-life situation or problems that involves the
computation of deciles.
II – Subject Matter
Topic: THE DECILE OF UNGROUPED DATA.
Reference (s): Mathematics Learner’s Module Grade 10, pp. 372-375
Mathematics Teacher’s Guide Grade 10, pp. 328-330
Method: Collaborative Teaching Method, Problem Solving Method
Strategies: Groupings, Questioning Strategy
Instructional Materials: Metastrips, LCD Presentation
Motivation:
A. Activity
The Boat is Sinking.
Mechanics:
1. The teacher will start the game with “the Boat is Sinking”.
2. The students will divide the group equally base on whatever number the teacher tell
them.
3. Students who were not able to join the group will be eliminated.
B. Analysis
The deciles are the nine score values that divide a distribution
into ten equal parts. It can be observed that D5 or the fifth decile is also
the median of the set of data.
10 % 10 % 10 % 10 % 10 % 10 % 10 % 10 % 10 % 10 %
D1 D2 D3 D4 D5 D6 D7 D8 D9
Examples:
𝐷3 = (9 + 1)
= (10)
=
𝐷3 = 3rd position/score
𝐷7 = (9 + 1)
=(10)
10
70
=
10
𝐷7 = 7th position/score
Therefore D7 = 27
Solution:
Steps in finding the decile of ungrouped data:
= 𝑘
2. Use the formula 𝐷𝑘 10 (𝑛 + 1)𝑡ℎ position/score
a. D2
𝐷2 = (12 + 1)
= (13)
=
𝐷2 = 3.9th position/score, which lies between the 3 rd and 4th
score.
45, 46, 46, 49, 52, 55, 57, 59, 63, 68, 69, 73
b. D6
𝐷6 = (12 + 1)
= (13)
=
𝐷6 = 7.8th position/score, which lies between the 7th and 8th
score.
45, 46, 46, 49, 52, 55, 57, 59, 63, 68, 69, 73
Interpolate the value to obtain D2
1. Subtract the seventh data from the eighth data: 59 –
57 = 2
2. Multiply the result by the decimal part obtained in the
position of D6 : 2 (0.8) = 1.6
3. Add the result to the 3rd or the smaller number: 57 +
1.6 = 58.6 Therefore, D6 = 58.6
D. Application:
Activity 1:
The class will be given a situation and they are going to answer the questions with a
corresponding points.
E. Assessment:
DIRECTION: Solve each problem on the board by group. (Problems are Contextualized
form and Rubrics of the activity will be presented. Each group will present their answer
Since the students are grouped according to their potentials or talents they will answer
the following activity and they will explain their answer in front of the class through:
Broadcasting
Role Playing
Dance
Poem
Song
Problem 1:
1. Mrs. Labonete gave a test to her students in Statistics. The students finished their test in 35
minutes. This time is the 2.5th decile of the allotted time. What does this mean?
Problem 2:
2. Anthony is a secretary in one big Company in La Union. His salary is in the 7th decile. Should
Anthony be glad about his salary or not? Explain your answer.
