Long Answer type Question

1. Hot and cold fluids enter a parallel flow double tube heat exchanger at 100°C and 15°C,
respectively. The heat capacity rates of hot and cold fluids are Ch = 2000 W/K and Cc =
1200 W/K, respectively. If the outlet temperature of the cold fluid is 45°C, find log mean
temperature difference (LMTD) of the heat exchanger in K. [KME 501.5, L3]
2. A chemical having specific heat of 3.3kj/kgK flowing at the rate of 20000kg/h enter a parallel
flow heat exchanger at 120 0C. The flow rate of cooling water is 50000kg/h with an inlet
temperature of 20 0C. The heat transfer area is 10 m 2 and the overall heat transfer coefficient is
1050W/ m2K. Take for water, specific heat =4.186kj/kgK
Find: (i) The effectiveness of the heat exchanger
(ii) The outlet temperature of water and chemical [KME 501.5, L3]
3. A counter flow double pipe heat exchanger using superheated steam is used to hot water at the
rate of 10500kg/h. The steam enters the heat exchanger at 180 0C and leaves at 1300C. The inlet and
exit temperatures of water are 300C and 800C respectively. If overall heat transfer coefficient from
steam to water is 814W/m2 0C, calculate the heat transfer area. What would be the increase in area if
the fluid flows were parallel? [KME 501.5, L4]
4. A counter- flow heat exchanger is employed to cool 0.55 Kg/s (c p = 2.45 KJ/ Kg 0 C) of oil from
1150 C to 400 C by the use of water. The inlet and outlet temperatures of cooling water are 15 0 C and
750 C, respectively. The overall heat transfer coefficient is expected to be 1450W/m 20 C. Using NTU
method, calculate the following:
(a) The mass flow rate of water,
(b)The effectiveness of the heat exchanger, [KME 501.5, L3]
0
5. A vertical plate 350mm high and 420 mm wide, at 40 C, is exposed to saturated steam at 1 atm.
Calculate the following:
(i) The film thickness at the bottom of the plate;
(ii) The maximum velocity at the bottom of the plate Where the properties of saturated vapour
at the mean film temperature tf are:
ρ=977.8kg/m3 ; μ=0.4x10-3kg/m-s ; k=0.667W/m0C and hfg =2257kJ/kg [KME 501.5, L4]

8. Steam in the condenser of a thermal power plant is to be condensed at a temperature of 30dg-C with
cooling water which enters the tubes of the condenser at 14deg-C and exits at 22deg-C. The total surface area
of the tubes is 50 m^2 , and the overall heat transfer coefficient is 2000 W/m^2-K. Calculate heat transfer to
the condenser. [KME 501.5, L3]
